Background / History

Aleister was a prodigiously talented magician whose early success encouraged profound arrogance. The Golden cabal welcomed him, and its secret treasure protected him from the consequences of phase sparks. That protection did not extend to his family: his daughter Lilith was assigned a fate of death that he could not prevent 392.

Lilith’s loss turned him against magic itself. He regarded magicians as people who pursued their own goals while passing the consequences to others—and recognized that he had been no different. He destroyed the cabal, killing his mentor and friends despite his remaining attachment to them. His objective became the elimination of magic, the superfluous Phases, and the Demon Gods responsible for perpetuating that order 392.

Aleister also turned his methods against himself. Through technological modification and self-restraint, he rejected the possibility of becoming a Demon God, accepting a curse that doomed his decisions to failure. He intended to prevent his campaign from ending with its victor becoming another version of the beings he opposed 392.

He founded Academy City and established the science side while remaining a magician himself. Both modern Western magic and Academy City’s scientific worldview developed within frameworks he could influence, giving him control over seemingly rival paths to power 391 396 405.

Appearance

  • Original body: Long silver hair reaching his ankles and a green surgical gown. He normally hangs upside down inside a liquid-filled life-support apparatus 391 394.
  • Ambiguous presence: His appearance simultaneously suggests a man and woman, child and elder, saint and sinner 528.
  • Voice: Calm, mechanically indistinct, and usually devoid of audible emotion 391.
  • Female possibility: Appears as a silver-haired girl wearing a pale blue women’s suit, black cloak, a hat decorated with crescent-shaped silver metal, and thigh-high socks 547.
  • Lord of Cinder form: Darkness fills his face and body before crimson breath, sparks, and furnace-like flames emerge from him 552.

Personality

Aleister’s apparent coldness conceals an intensely personal purpose. Love for his family remains inviolable even when he sacrifices friendships, reputation, and his own future. His hatred of magic develops into a resolve to create a world where ordinary happiness is no longer threatened by the consequences of other people’s supernatural ambitions 392.

He is ruthless without being self-deceived. Aleister openly recognizes his selfishness and does not mistake the grandeur of his objective for moral innocence. He treats lives, institutions, and even himself as resources that may be spent if the result justifies the cost 392 410 414.

His caution is cultivated rather than innate. Earlier in life he was dissolute; the curse of failure teaches him to prepare alternate routes and accommodate setbacks. When Roland offers a credible route beyond his existing limitations, Aleister becomes willing to surrender initiative instead of preserving control for its own sake 393 395 465.

His restrained manner also hides a deliberately indecent sense of humor. His female possibility describes his history of dirty jokes, manipulation of women’s feelings, and self-published erotic fiction with unmistakable pride. Around the restored Lilith, that irreverence gives way to conspicuous, doting affection 548 553.

Abilities & Skills

Magical Mastery

Aleister is described as the greatest magician of his century, having advanced magic beyond the preceding millennia’s development in roughly seventy years 391 393.

  • Modern Western magic: Created a widely adopted framework whose back doors and loopholes allow him to counter practitioners who remain within it 396.
  • Demon God power: Can employ limited Demon God power while remaining human 394.
  • Countermeasures: His collected Demon God parameters make surprise attacks using magic similar to Fairy-ification viable against their weakened forms 537.
  • Compatibility limits: His mastery does not negate unfavorable matchups. Coronzon possesses numerous techniques specifically effective against him 548.

Abyss and Summoning Rituals

His knowledge encompasses the Tree of Life, Tree of Evil, and the relationships between spiritual rank, souls, and material existence 391 393.

  • Designs Roland’s descent along the Path of the Flame Sword to consolidate his existence and create a body connected to the world 393.
  • Attempts to balance the Trees of Life and Evil when the first procedure fails; Aiwass ultimately helps complete the descent 393.
  • Shares a specialized Abyss-summoning incantation with Coronzon, established through their earlier spiritual connection 549.
  • Reverses that connection to draw both himself and Coronzon toward the Abyss, combining the ritual with a spacecraft and black-hole power to reach another realm 549.

Science-Side Archetype

Aleister’s control of the science side extends beyond political authority. He shapes the shared framework through which its members understand their abilities 405.

  • Helped establish Esper development as an alternative to magic after studying naturally occurring ability users called Gemstones 396.
  • Can disseminate interpretations of concepts throughout the science-side archetype 405.
  • Can undermine powers dependent on that framework by invalidating their users’ foundational understanding 405.
  • This control is framework-dependent; Roland specifically seeks a path beyond both Aleister’s magic and science systems 396 405.

Possibilities and Fate Management

Aleister binds an enormous number of possibilities to himself. Keeping them suppressed at the same coordinate is one reason he must remain confined to his tank 394 551.

  • Manifested possibilities: His overlapping identities can separate into distinct figures, including a silver-haired female possibility possessing everything he does 547 548.
  • Contingency planning: Accounts for failure in advance so that different outcomes can still approach his intended destination 393.
  • Phase sparks: Uses the same laws that caused his family’s tragedy to guide branching developments toward a common result 398.
  • Limitation: His possibilities do not remove his curse of failure, and even their billions of variations are strained by approaching the Golden Throne as a Lord of Cinder 393 552.

Magnetic Field Rotation and the Asura Path

Aleister directs his cultivation toward life force, addressing the physical vulnerability shared by magicians 548.

  • Regenerates a destroyed heart and rebuilds his body almost immediately after being reduced to bloody mist 547 548.
  • No longer depends on his heart or brain as fatal weak points 548.
  • Can allow his body to exist in molecular form 548.
  • His talent or exceptional compatibility with the Dharma Sutra gives him unusually rapid progress along the Asura Path 548.
  • Limits: His brief accumulation of experience prevents him from fully expressing his realm’s combat potential. Coronzon’s Path of the Flame Sword still overwhelms his incomplete cultivation 548 549.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Windowless Building — His temple, operational base, and life-support facility. Its defensive system calculates incoming shock waves and produces counter-vibrations capable of withstanding a direct nuclear strike 393 414.
  • Life-support apparatus — Built by Heaven Canceller; sustains Aleister while he remains in a hibernation-like state with much of his thinking assisted by machinery 391 546.
  • Question-and-answer artificial intelligence — Coordinates intelligence and routine Academy City affairs, allowing him to concentrate on larger plans 410 414.
  • Staff of Impact — A Spirit Garment wielded by his female possibility. Amplifies magic to ten times the power imagined by the target and remains effective against Demon Gods 548.
  • Anti-magic Powered Suit — Incorporates Magnetic Field Rotation and complements his countermeasures against weakened Demon Gods 537.
  • Hidden spacecraft — Concealed within the Windowless Building and launched during his reverse-summoning confrontation with Coronzon 549.
  • Three rubies — Used to initiate the reverse Abyss-summoning ritual against Coronzon 549.

Relationships

  • Lilith — His daughter and the central personal motive behind his war against magic. Aiwass preserves her existence, and Roland provides a physical body, allowing their reunion 392 553.
  • Roland — Contractual ally and a counterpart whose goals resemble his own. Their cooperation rests on aligned interests, reciprocal leverage, and respect for boundaries rather than unconditional trust 392 395 528.
  • Aiwass — Holy Guardian Angel, source of knowledge, and longtime contractor. Their cooperation combines ideological agreement with controls placed upon her; she later leaves to contract with Roland 391 410 528.
  • Laura / Coronzon — The demon who previously guided him across the Abyss and shares a spiritual connection with him. Becomes his direct opponent, using specially prepared counters against him 548 549.
  • Kamijou Touma — A crucial subject in his plans through Imagine Breaker. Aleister later calls prioritizing Roland above Kamijou his best decision 482 548.
  • Accelerator — A central component of his plans because of his extraordinary capacity to analyze and manipulate rules, not merely the strength of Vector Control 496.
  • Heaven Canceller — Creator of the life-support system that preserves his body 546.
  • Bishop — An opponent who comes to understand Aleister’s refusal to abandon humanity and asks Roland to convey an apology before dying 537.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Contract with Roland

  • Contacts Roland through a half-page from the Book of Ages, using Aiwass as an intermediary. His questions test Roland’s purpose, nature, and intended future 391 392.
  • Deduces that Roland originates outside the world. After hearing that Roland wishes to become the only god and a kind person, exchanges true names with him to establish their Contract 392.
  • Oversees Roland’s difficult descent into the Material World, with repeated ritual complications prompting Roland to curse him upon awakening 393 394.
  • Agrees to conceal Roland’s early activities and handle their aftermath. Assigns him Aiwass’s codename, Dragon, to confuse outside observers 395 448.

Supporting Magnetic Field Power

  • Recognizes Roland’s power as a possible alternative to both magic and conventional Esper development, removing Mental Out from his existing plans to accommodate further investigation 410.
  • After Roland’s punch causes a massive earthquake, chooses to supply him with more Espers rather than obstruct his experiments 414.
  • Accepts Roland’s intervention in the Misaka Network and refrains from activating the incomplete artificial Heaven without agreement 465 482.
  • Transfers Academy City’s authority to Roland, appointing him acting Board Chairman, and departs to gather information while the Demon Gods are distracted 494 528.

Hidden World and True Gremlin

  • Infiltrates the Hidden World alone to preserve his usefulness and initiative within the alliance 528.
  • Reveals that he has destroyed the Hidden World and obtained the parameters of every member of True Gremlin 527 528.
  • Proposes exploiting the Demon Gods’ rivalries and arrogance to draw them into the present world and Roland’s trap 528.

Final Confrontation with Coronzon

  • Survives Laura’s attack on his heart by revealing the Asura Immortality Art 546 547.
  • Endures repeated destruction, then deliberately catches her Path of the Flame Sword and seizes her hand 548.
  • Uses their shared incantation against her, launching the Windowless Building and diverting their journey toward the Golden Throne, where they encounter Roland 549.
  • Reveals that his planned death was part of an arrangement made with Roland before the Demon Gods invaded. Becomes a Lord of Cinder to buy the time Roland needs 551 552.

Reunion and the Restored World

  • Reconstructs himself through his wise Witch possibility and reunites with Lilith in the steel garden built for her. The garden also serves as the embryonic form of Roland’s Little Garden project 553.
  • Resolves to guide Academy City toward peace and hope as atonement, accepting the collection of his power when the larger crisis takes priority 565.
  • After Roland restores the world, recognizes that Kamijou is manifesting Magnetic Field Rotation 568.
