Background / History

Shi Qingyun carries Little White away during his escape in Chapter 39. The creature shows no fear of him, licking his palm before clinging to his head with its paws. Once they reach safety, he feeds it Beast King meat and examines its damaged Qilin inheritance 39 40.

Its origins are connected to the egg shown in the black bone shard’s visions. Shi Qingyun witnesses a wounded white-robed youth protecting a five-colored egg afflicted by a spreading black wound. The youth’s remains eventually form the Qilin Secret Realm, while his skin wraps around the blackened egg. Before Shi Qingyun leaves the vision, an ancient voice asks him to “Take good care of it” 41 42.

Appearance

• Entirely black fur, despite its name; its coat becomes darker after absorbing formation light and refining the Golden Lotus 40 43 46.
• Small, four-legged body with tender, fleshy paws, a round belly, a pink tongue, and a tail 39 40 43 46.
• Bumps on its head, which enlarge during Golden Lotus refinement 46.
• Five-colored radiance appears when it absorbs Dao resonance or Yin-Yang Qi; colorful light also spills from its body during medicinal refinement 40 41 46.

Personality

Little White is affectionate and attentive toward Shi Qingyun. It tries to lick him, frequently rides on his head or shoulder, and offers him meat when it thinks he is upset. After his dangerous diversion of the Golden Lotus’s guardian, it climbs onto him and lifts his hair to inspect him for injuries 43 45 46.

It is playful, curious, and easily tempted by food or valuable substances. It chases butterflies, excitedly reacts to the Golden Lotus’s fragrance, and drinks several pots of essence-rich tea while accepting fruit from a maid. Repetitive forest scenery leaves it listless, but the imperial capital’s busy streets immediately restore its enthusiasm 43 45 47 48.

Its friendliness does not make it fearless. It hides during Shi Qingyun’s confrontation with the War Goddess and emerges once the fighting stops. At Godfall Mountain, it grips Shi Qingyun tightly and looks away from the churning magma 44 48.

Energy and Medicine Absorption

Trivia

• Shi Qingyun deliberately chooses the name Little White because the creature is black all over, describing the opposite name as a way to “balance things out.” He postpones choosing a formal name 40.
