Background / History
Zorua lived under the care of a Zoroark before wandering away to look for fruit. Asura of Team Plasma captured her using what she describes as a “big wooden thing” and brought her to Kanto, where her species is not native 23 29.
Near Viridian City, she disguised herself as a little girl simply because she thought the girl was pretty. Heath exposed the disguise by deliberately naming the wrong Pokémon as the girl’s training partner. When he warned her that the League was searching for her, she changed into a Caterpie, then revealed her identity as Zorua. His mention of Team Plasma provoked an attack, but he left sweet-and-sour ribs for her rather than forcing a confrontation 23 29.
Heath continued looking for her in Viridian Forest. When Asura returned to reclaim her, Zorua refused to go back. Asura disabled her illusion with a device, and she fought his Xatu while Heath and Farfetch’d confronted Cofagrigus. Officer Jenny Feng’s arrival forced Asura to flee 25 27 28 29.
Injured during the encounter, Zorua disguised herself as a Caterpie and asked Heath to take her home. He concealed her identity from Officer Jenny Feng and treated a small wound on her left foreleg with Potion. Zorua subsequently accepted his invitation to travel and discover delicious food, sealing their partnership by resting her paw on his hand 29 30.
After joining Heath, she accompanied him to his breakfast stall but refused to enter a Poké Ball. She adopted a Caterpie disguise to avoid attracting attention as a Pokémon from outside Kanto and commonly rode on his shoulder 31 32.
Appearance
Zorua is a small, foxlike Shiny Pokémon with blue fur rather than the dark-red coloration Heath associates with an ordinary Zorua. Her body is soft and furry, and Heath notices a faint floral fragrance rather than a musky fox smell 23 30 37.
- Blue ears and tail: She can retain these features while creating a human disguise 30.
- Little-girl disguise: Based on a girl she saw in Viridian City, chosen for her appearance rather than any personal connection 29.
- Caterpie disguise: Her usual inconspicuous form while accompanying Heath in public 32.
Personality
Zorua is initially timid and distrustful of humans, reacting angrily when Heath mentions Team Plasma. Her mother had warned her that humans were deceitful, shameless, and willing to abandon others to survive. Watching people respond to the Viridian City fire leads her to call humans “complicated and awkward” rather than simply repeating that judgment 23 24 41.
She has a pronounced tsundere streak: she claims to accept Heath’s partnership reluctantly, dismisses food she plainly wants, and insists that learning Night Daze will not make her eternally grateful. Her delight frequently undermines these protests 30 34 41.
Talkative and mischievous, she keeps Heath awake by chatting with Farfetch’d and pretends to sleep when she wants to ignore him. She also holds grudges over unwanted nicknames, withholding her interpreting until Heath negotiates with food 31 46 47.
Despite her teasing, she is observant. She recognizes Sabrina’s strength and avoids exposing herself through Telepathy, notices movement in the cabinet hiding Charmander, and becomes openly possessive when Officer Jenny Aya pays attention to Heath 34 47 50.
Abilities & Skills
Illusions
Zorua creates convincing disguises of humans and Pokémon. Heath repeatedly struggles to distinguish her from genuine members of the species she imitates 23 28.
- Documented forms: A little girl, Caterpie, Farfetch’d, and Cofagrigus 23 28 29 31.
- Customizable details: Can reproduce the little girl while retaining her own ears and tail 30.
- Visual rather than bodily change: Heath feels four paws while she looks like a Caterpie, concluding that her actual body remains unchanged and touch can expose the disguise 33.
- Familiarity requirement: Forms based on creatures she has never seen look strange and collapse easily 30.
- Counters: Asura’s device forcibly cancels her illusion; Heath’s Ingredient Identifier identifies her through it 28 33.
Telepathy and Interpretation
Zorua speaks directly into Heath’s mind and understands other Pokémon’s communication 28 34 35.
- Guides Heath to her hiding place without revealing herself aloud 28.
- Translates Farfetch’d’s wishes, questions, and complaints 34 46 47.
- Relays Ekans’s warning about an intruder in the stray Pokémon’s territory 35.
- Avoids using Telepathy around Sabrina after recognizing her powerful psychic abilities 34.
Combat Moves
- Unnamed Dark-type claw attack: Used against Farfetch’d during their first confrontation; it fails because of Farfetch’d’s Wonder Guard 23.
- Night Daze: Learned instantly through Heath’s restricted Technical Machine. Zorua recalls it as a move that only talented Zoroark can normally learn 41.
Keen Senses
- Detects a sour smell from Heath’s barbecue skewers, prompting him to remark on her sharp nose 38.
- Notices a cabinet door moving, leading Heath to discover the hidden Charmander 47.
Relationships
- Heath — Trainer and partner. He protects her from Asura, treats her injury, and promises a journey centered on discovering food. Their pact explicitly rejects betraying one another 28 29 30.
- Farfetch’d — Teammate and frequent conversation partner, whom she calls “Onion.” Their early squabbles give way to enthusiastic late-night conversations and regular interpreting 29 31 47.
- Zoroark caretaker — Looked after her before she wandered away and was captured 29.
- Asura — Captor and Team Plasma member. He claims ownership of her, but she vehemently refuses to return 28 29.
- Officer Jenny Feng — Helps drive Asura away and supplies the Potion used to treat Zorua. After seeing her illusion demonstrated, she accepts Zorua as Heath’s partner 29 30.
- Ekans and Meowth — Initially distrust her Caterpie disguise out of concern for Heath; relax after he introduces her 34 35.
- Officer Jenny Aya — Target of Zorua’s jealous complaints after Aya’s interaction with Heath 50.
