Background / History

Farfetch'd befriended Heath during his years running a food stall in Viridian City. He regularly visited the secluded stall for Jianbing Guozi, promising payment but repeatedly freeloading. When Heath finally demanded his treasured leek in exchange, Farfetch'd reluctantly surrendered it rather than miss another meal 1.

After paying off his parents' debt, Heath asked Farfetch'd to become his Pokémon. Farfetch'd initially refused, then accepted an offer of unlimited Jianbing Guozi and other dishes. Heath bought a basic Poké Ball for 100 League Coins—the last of his savings—and Farfetch'd willingly entered it, becoming his first Pokémon 1 2.

Farfetch'd's species had nearly been eaten to extinction because both its meat and its accompanying leek were prized ingredients. Indigo League protection made captured Farfetch'd subject to registration and continuing oversight. Officer Jenny Feng arranged Heath's registration and warned that Pokémon Hunters still targeted the species 1 3.

Appearance

• Feathered, duck-like body: Has wings, a feathered head, and a fluffy texture that Heath enjoys stroking 9 22.
• Carried leek: Usually holds his treasured leek in his wings, including while sleeping 1 5.
• Dog-like mannerisms: Wags his tail happily while eating and wiggles his rear when asking Heath for food 1 5.

Personality

Farfetch'd is clever, perceptive, and strongly motivated by food. Before his capture, he tried passing off an ordinary leek to Heath and repeatedly obtained meals on promises to pay later. Food also helps Heath persuade him to cooperate: he reluctantly accepts being recalled only after Heath promises five eggs in the next day's jianbing 1 2.

He is wary of strangers and grips his leek defensively when Ash tries to pet him. By contrast, he is comfortable around Officer Jenny Feng, apparently recognizing that people dressed like her will not harm him 3 5.

Cooking brings out his determination. He watches Heath closely, eagerly attempts new dishes, and continues practicing despite repeated failures. Heath particularly values his earnest attitude during lessons. His enthusiasm can outpace his competence, however, as shown when he attempts braised chicken before fully mastering braised pork 5 9 20 39.

His ambition to become the strongest Farfetch'd does not translate into sustained exercise. After receiving a dumbbell, he works out briefly, collapses from exhaustion, and postpones further training until tomorrow 47.

Heath grants Farfetch'd Wonder Guard through his special reward system 2.

Fire Punch

Originally taught to improve cooking rather than combat, Fire Punch gives Farfetch'd better control over the griddle's heat 9.

• Defeats a wild Farfetch'd with two strikes during the search for a replacement leek 24.
• Catches Cofagrigus off guard after Heath disguises the attack as a Tackle 28.
• Repeated strikes scorch Cofagrigus's face, although Heath observes that they inflict relatively little damage 28.

• Zorua — Teammate, interpreter, and late-night conversation partner. Their initial squabbles include Zorua calling him a “stupid duck”; later, they chat until after one in the morning. Farfetch'd also threatens her with his leek when she refuses to leave Heath's bed 29 31 47.
• Officer Jenny Feng — Oversees his registration and helps protect him. She allows Heath into Viridian Forest after inspecting Farfetch'd's damaged leek 3 22.

Protecting Zorua from Asura

• Detects Cofagrigus behind Heath and lashes out with his leek before Heath notices the threat 28.
• Follows Heath's feigned Tackle order with a surprise Fire Punch, exploiting Asura's assumption that a Normal-type attack cannot affect Cofagrigus 28.
• Continues attacking through Cofagrigus's ineffective counterattacks. After the confrontation, Heath finds him healthy and uninjured apart from ruffled feathers 28 29.

Trivia

• Farfetch'd eagerly learns to prepare ordinary ducks, despite Heath's discomfort at teaching a duck Pokémon to make roast duck. He even saves money to buy a duck for practice 21 22 34.
• Heath remembers that a particular regional form of Farfetch'd can evolve into Sirfetch'd; the provided chapters do not establish that his partner can do so 24.
• Heath tests a Zorua-only Night Daze Technical Machine on him, but the system explicitly refuses to teach Farfetch'd the move 24.
