Orphanhood and the Spirit Hall Trial

Xie Yue and Hu Liena grew up as wandering orphans, exposed to violence, official indifference, and the threat of enslavement. Spirit Hall took them in and placed them among five hundred talented candidates in a Martial Soul Forest trial, which they understood would continue until only one hundred remained. Even the prospect of becoming ordinary Spirit Hall guards seemed far better to them than returning to the streets 4.

During the trial, Xie Yue tried to hold off a pursuing group so Hu Liena could escape. He killed two opponents in one exchange but was overwhelmed and pinned down. Leng Xiyue intervened, distracting the attackers while Hu Liena charmed their leader. Despite a pierced left shoulder, Xie Yue seized Leng Xiyue’s dagger, killed the leader and two more attackers, and forced the remaining pursuer to flee 3.

After collapsing from his injuries, he treated his wound with gathered herbs and asked Hu Liena to check their rescuer’s condition and return her dagger. He introduced both siblings and promised to repay Leng Xiyue. Later, impressed by her newly awakened armor Martial Soul and apparent innate full soul power, he sincerely urged her to join Spirit Hall 3 6.

Although the siblings believed their lives were at risk, hidden observers were protecting valuable candidates like them. Wang Yan later explained that Spirit Hall quietly removed unsuitable children and rescued participants who reached their limits 6 10.

Academy Life

By the time Leng Xiyue entered Spirit Hall Academy, the siblings had completed their trial and been adopted by a powerful elder. Xie Yue and Hu Liena immediately defended her against a classroom gang, helping defeat seventeen boys without Martial Souls or Soul Skills. Xie Yue then stepped forward first when their teacher, Chu Lingyun, demanded to know who was responsible 25 26.

Personality

Xie Yue is fiercely protective of Hu Liena. He rejects an enemy’s claim that she is useless, insists that training will reveal her potential, and becomes distressed when she collapses from exhaustion. His interest in earning Arena money is partly motivated by wanting to give her a comfortable life beyond their elder’s limited luxury allowance 3 6 26.

He repays kindness through action: after thanking Leng Xiyue for saving them, he later intervenes when classmates attack her and attempts to shield both girls from their teacher’s reprimand. He treats bruises and swelling as familiar inconveniences rather than serious setbacks 3 25 26.

His survival experience makes him wary of strangers, particularly trial participants who have developed a taste for killing. He welcomes strong opponents and understands the academy’s competitive system, but recognizes that evenly matched Arena battles can be exhausting.
