Background / History

The Dream-Eating Gecko’s origins are mysterious. He had lived for several hundred years and was renowned among the Golden Wing Sect’s spirit insects, but countless disciples and several grand elders failed to establish a bond with him. His mental power was too much for prospective masters to bear, while his own reserves could not sustain his growth 72 153 154.

Before meeting Lin Ke, he spent much of his time asleep in the Spirit Insect Cave. He remembered possessing more abilities in the past, but mental depletion left him able to recall only Mirage Scene and Divine Mill. The context does not establish his original cultivation realm 72 153.

Meeting Lin Ke

Xiao Li brought Lin Ke and Zong Ya to his warm, damp, jungle-like nest. The Gecko tested Lin Ke with yellow mist that briefly induced overwhelming drowsiness, then declared that Lin Ke was the only person in the sect he liked. Unable to pay the initial purchase price of 130,000 spirit stones, Lin Ke rented his services for 6,000 low-grade spirit stones per month 73.

The Gecko recognized Lin Ke’s secret Niwan Palace and promised not to reveal it. He chose to rest outside the palace, guard its otherwise undefended entrance, and consume leaking mental power. While doing so, he also refined that escaping power and returned a subtler force into the depths of Lin Ke’s soul 75 78.

Becoming Lin Shimeng

After explaining that Lin Ke’s Dual-Origin Palace might support nine Yin and nine Yang Void Cores, the Gecko rushed back to the Spirit Insect Cave to arrange his own sale. He feared losing his place if Lin Ke acquired other powerful spirit insects first 104.

He returned several months later after negotiating the price with True Person Mu Xuan down to 50,000 spirit stones. By then, he was calling Lin Ke his adoptive father and himself Lin Shimeng. Lin Ke formally refined him using his abundant mental power, finally giving the Gecko the compatible master he had sought for centuries 148 149 153.

Appearance

  • Coloration: Orange and pale-yellow body; his tail is later described as pink before its armored transformation 73 689.
  • Build: Plump paws and a fat tail, which he curls around his head while sleeping 73 103.
  • Eyes: Snake-like vertical pupils; habitually licks his eyes with his tongue 73 78.
  • Tongue: Long, bright red, and capable of swiftly wrapping around prey 230 289.
  • Mist form: Can dissolve into yellow mist and reappear elsewhere 73 75 78.
  • Later armor: Develops a thick armored ring around his tail that can enclose his whole body 689.

Personality

Despite his age, the Dream-Eating Gecko speaks and behaves like an excitable child. He calls himself “only a baby,” eagerly seeks praise, and celebrates Lin Ke’s achievements with extravagant enthusiasm. His affection is sincere: when Lin Ke collapses during cultivation, he fetches Zong Ya and anxiously watches over him 103 186 187 355.

He is also foul-mouthed, boastful, and combative. He dismisses White Dew True Person as a “paper tiger,” trades insults with Huang Fuqi, and regularly bickers or wrestles with Lin Xuanyuan. His devotion to Lin Ke produces equally extravagant flattery, much to Lin Xuanyuan’s disdain 78 283 381 409.

His appetite centers on mental nourishment. He bargains for extra Black-Spotted Blood Mosquitoes and treats Wasteland Spirits as delicacies. Nevertheless, he can respond constructively to failure: after Red Hou exposes his dependence on mental attacks, he diligently develops Object Control rather than relying solely on his innate advantages 230 348 355 431.

Initially protective of his position as Lin Ke’s spirit insect, he later admits that living alone in the Niwan Palace is lonely and asks for companions 104 200.

Abilities & Skills

Mirage Scene

Uses mental power to create illusions in the outside world rather than merely manipulating ordinary dreams 153.

  • Spreads ghostly blue mist and transforms Lin Ke’s residence into a convincing primeval forest 153.
  • Produces an illusion that Lin Ke judges most Dao Foundation and Golden Core cultivators would struggle to detect 153.
  • Requires substantial mental power to sustain 153.
  • Its underlying power circulation can be observed with Lin Ke’s Yang Pupil 380.

Divine Mill

Directly attacks consciousness with highly condensed mental power. Lin Ke’s attempts to reproduce it reveal a mechanism involving compressed mental tremors 153 205.

  • Instantly destroys the minds of Stinger Hawk Moths and Amethyst Longhorn Beetles; the beetles’ crystal armor provides no protection 154.
  • Knocks an arena challenger unconscious without killing him 342.
  • Can combine with Lin Ke’s mental power for stronger assaults 239 511.
  • Becomes powerful enough that ordinary Nascent Soul early-stage cultivators would struggle to withstand it after his Wasteland Spirit feeding 432.
  • Can be blocked by specialized mental defenses, including Feng Jinyan’s Golden Great Bell phantom and Shi You’s Myriad Transformations Profound Nether Bell 511 621.

Mental Devouring and Refinement

Consumes mental energy as nourishment, including hostile attacks, killing intent, residual power in corpses, crystals, and trial phantoms 239 289 300 411 688.

  • Swallows the Phantom Mosquito’s mental attacks and ultimately eats the mosquito itself 289.
  • Absorbs the Alligator’s killing intent without suffering the psychological effects that trouble Lin Ke 239.
  • Selects demon-beast corpses according to how much mental power remains in them 300.
  • Rapidly strengthens himself by eating Wasteland Spirit cores and Purple Mansion Insect phantoms 411 431 688 689.
  • Refines Lin Ke’s escaping mental power into a subtler force that sinks into his soul 78.

Object Control and Combined Attacks

Developed to compensate for opponents capable of resisting direct mental techniques 348 355.

  • Manipulates stones, rubble, and metal spheres at range 354 385 432.
  • Temporarily stores Divine Mill in controlled objects to combine physical penetration with mental attacks 355.
  • Wraps projectiles in both spirit power and mental power, producing penetrating strikes followed by explosions 385.
  • Has a stated effective range of one thousand feet for the developed combined technique 386.
  • Assembles spider corpses, venom, and rubble into a hammer several dozen feet long, smashing corrosive webs and thousands of Dark Blue Spiders 481.

Mental Defense and Perception

Treats mental power as an extension of his body, shaping it as naturally as breathing rather than controlling it as an external tool 374 375.

  • Forms a thin, seamless, pale-golden defensive halo 374.
  • Teaches Lin Ke to circulate mental power through his body, helping make Lin Ke’s defensive barrier more than ten times stronger 374.
  • Explains how to use external Mental Imprints as an intangible “hand” for manipulating objects 221.
  • Detects a concealed Nascent Soul late-stage cultivator while scouting without being discovered 574.
  • Communicates mentally and translates the Purple Mansion Insect’s proposed treatment for Lin Ke’s witch gu poisoning 577.

Nightmare and Formation Support

Uses mental illusions in conjunction with Lin Ke’s insect formations 652 752.

  • Occupies the formation eye while Nightmare causes enemies to mistake dangerous movements for successful evasions 652.
  • Learns the Seven Stars Gaze-Blazing Art from Lin Ke for use within the formation 652.
  • Deploys Nightmare against male Mantle Spiders during their capture 752.
  • Leads Black Ice Centipedes in forming an insect formation 765.
  • Combines mental barrages with the centipedes’ Black Ice Falling Goose Slashes, overcoming enemies protected by mental-defense bells 767.

Limitations

  • Heavy nourishment requirements: Mental depletion causes prolonged sleep and restricts his remembered abilities 72 153.
  • Mental-resistant enemies: Red Hou exposes a serious weakness in his original fighting style; giant Wasteland Spirits also withstand Divine Mill, forcing him to switch to Object Control 355 432.
  • Physical vulnerability: Lin Xuanyuan’s surprise Gold-Shattering Cry throws him into a cave wall, and a later spar ends with the Alligator pinning him by the neck 241 381.
  • Hazardous mental contact: Touching the wasteland’s scarlet moonlight with his mental power causes sharp pain and forces him to withdraw immediately 413.
  • Incomplete knowledge: Initially mistakes Lin Ke’s thirteen-layer Dao Foundation for an eight-layer one and cannot identify the scarlet moonlight’s source 104 261 413.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Metal spheres — Spat from his mouth and used as Object Control projectiles against a giant Wasteland Spirit resistant to mental techniques 432.
  • Improvised battlefield weapons — Uses available debris rather than a fixed weapon; his largest documented example is the venom-coated hammer formed from Wang Rui’s destroyed spiders 481.

Relationships

  • Lin Ke — Master and adoptive father. Lin Ke supplies mental nourishment and suitable prey; the Gecko guards his Niwan Palace, teaches mental techniques, and fights beside him 75 149 153 221 374.
  • Lin Xuanyuan — Fellow spirit companion and persistent rival. They exchange insults and fight each other, but cooperate in battles and efforts to save Lin Ke 381 409 432 577.
  • Zong Ya — Helps arrange his first meeting with Lin Ke. He later seeks her help when Lin Ke loses consciousness 73 187.
  • Cloud Dream Saintess / Clam Maiden — Recognizes her protected soul and identifies her as likely the real Cloud Dream Saintess before Lin Ke refines her 148.
  • Purple Mansion Insect — Translates its mental communication during Lin Ke’s poisoning. Later exploits its weak mirror phantoms as nourishment during the Heart-Testing Mirror trial 577 688.
  • True Person Mu Xuan — Negotiates with him to reduce his purchase price to 50,000 spirit stones 148.
  • White Dew True Person — Previously berated and rejected the renowned sword cultivator. Claims that White Dew’s weak divine soul makes him vulnerable despite his sword prowess 78.
