Background / History
Prince of Lordaeron
Arthas first meets Nathanos when Jaina introduces him by his full name. Later, the two eavesdrop on Terenas’s meeting with Lord Prysto. Arthas remains trusting of the noble, while Nathanos suspects magical manipulation. During the same period, Arthas visits Invincible, his future mount 29 134.
As a paladin, Arthas serves under Uther but increasingly challenges his authority. At Stratholme, he searches desperately for evidence that the inhabitants can still be saved, only to recognize the smell of bread made from contaminated grain. He subsequently strips Uther of command, decides to cull the city, and departs for Northrend with roughly one hundred soldiers 187 188.
A later vision shows Arthas swearing that he will sacrifice everything for his people to obtain Frostmourne. Nathanos interprets his subsequent abandonment of the badly wounded Muradin as proof that personal vengeance has displaced that oath 462.
Betrayal of Lordaeron
Arthas returns carrying Frostmourne, accompanied by Marvin and Farek. While they kill the palace guards, he approaches Terenas and announces that he is “inheriting” his throne before murdering him. He leaves the hall without showing emotion 194.
During the campaign involving Kel’Thuzad’s remains, Arthas confronts Uther over an urn containing Terenas’s ashes. Uther initially overwhelms him through strength and the Holy Light. Arthas changes tactics, recalls Nathanos’s advice about exploiting an opponent’s fighting style, and drives Frostmourne through a gap in Uther’s armor, ultimately killing his former mentor 196.
Invasion of Quel’Thalas
Arthas battles Nathanos while Crypt Lords retrieve the fragments of a key needed to breach the elven defenses. Nathanos initially gains the advantage, but Frostmourne protects Arthas long enough for him to assemble the key. Alleria and her Rangers arrive to rescue Nathanos 200.
From his fortress at Dalsom, Arthas prepares an assault with abominations, ghouls, Death Knights, gargoyles, and siege engines. He also holds Nathanos’s mother, Daphne, captive and has her brought forward bound to a cross 203 204.
Arthas kills Nathanos and raises him as a Death Knight, turning a former ally into a servant. The Scourge destroys Silvermoon City and advances toward the Sunwell. When the strait to Quel’Danas blocks the army, Arthas uses Frostmourne to freeze a crossing 207.
King Anasterian severs Invincible’s forelegs, unhorsing Arthas and provoking his fury. Arthas kills the king, whose soul is consumed by Frostmourne, then repairs his mount. He reaches the Sunwell and uses its power to resurrect Kel’Thuzad 207.
Rule from the Frozen Throne
As Lich King, Arthas is satisfied with his power but irritated by enemies who remain beyond his control. He and Kel’Thuzad discuss using the high elves against Nathanos and the Forsaken. The Lich Gate conspiracy likewise aims to turn the Alliance and Horde against the rebellious undead faction 456 460 462.
Arthas personally disrupts the Silver Arena tournament, shattering the ground with Frostmourne and dropping the competitors into the underground Nerub ruins to face the resurrected Anub’arak 480.
By the siege of Icecrown Citadel, Tirion’s destruction of the Heart of Ice has weakened him somewhat. Frostmourne also shows signs of strain, and Terenas’s soul confronts him with the judgment awaiting his crimes. Nevertheless, Arthas remains confident enough to seek a new champion in the captured Bolvar 494 495.
Final Battle
At the Frozen Throne, Arthas confronts Tirion and Azeroth’s champions while Bolvar hangs tortured above them. He summons Valkyr, duels Tirion, and attempts to undermine the paladin’s convictions. Tirion’s acceptance of his son’s death unsettles him, while the revelation of a crack in Frostmourne exposes a more immediate weakness 501 503 504.
Arthas defeats the champions and intends to resurrect them as Scourge warriors. Nathanos interrupts the spell from the Frozen Throne, then acknowledges his own responsibility for leading Arthas astray. Tirion escapes his icy prison through the Holy Light; Frostmourne breaks, its captive souls overwhelm Arthas, and Ashbringer strikes him down. Terenas and Nathanos appear before him as he lies defeated 505 506.
Appearance
- White hair: Alleria identifies him as the white-haired prince during the battle over the elven key 200.
- Undead body: As a Death Knight, his body is sustained by the Lich King’s power 196.
- Armored hands: While seated on the Frozen Throne, he tries to catch falling snow with a gauntleted hand 456.
- Mounted silhouette: During his campaigns, he rides the skeletal warhorse Invincible and carries Frostmourne 203 226.
Personality
The younger Arthas is trusting, particularly compared with Nathanos’s suspicion of Prysto. His conduct at Stratholme also shows an urgent desire to find some remaining opportunity to save the city. That urgency gives way to defiance of Uther and a willingness to impose his own solution 134 187 188.
After taking Frostmourne, Arthas displays cruelty and little remorse. He murders his father, threatens to raise a paladin as his servant, and announces the destruction of the elves’ race and civilization. His affection for Invincible remains conspicuous: damage to the horse enrages him, and he repairs it immediately after defeating Anasterian 194 196 207.
As Lich King, Arthas treats his opponents’ determination as a resource to exploit. He allows Azeroth’s strongest champions to overcome his servants so that he can claim them for the Scourge. His confidence rests heavily on the belief that his own power is limitless, but Frostmourne’s instability and Tirion’s resolve expose his vulnerability 503 504 505.
