Background / History
Nathanos was born into the Marius family of Lordaeron. His father, Bred Marius, remained at Marius Farm even as war and the Scourge devastated the region. Nathanos repeatedly urged him to relocate to safety, but Bred refused to leave the family’s ancestral home 61. Nathanos was protective of his young cousin Stephan, whom he openly cared for 61.
As a youth, Nathanos trained under Gudul in tactics and developed a fierce determination to surpass the rangers of Quel’Thalas. Being told that rangerhood was an elven honor beyond human reach left him resentful of both rangers and elves, though it also drove his pursuit of martial skill 13 17 18.
He later became associated with Uther and served close to Prince Arthas Menethil as a squire. During the Scourge invasion, Nathanos commanded defenders at Hearthglen and remained with its civilians and wounded soldiers despite overwhelming enemy numbers 174 188. He also fought to protect Quel’Thalas and the Windrunner sisters; his sacrifice during that war allowed them to survive, but ultimately led to his death 621.
Arthas resurrected Nathanos as an Undead. Rather than remain a mindless servant, he regained autonomy and came to regard both the Scourge and the living as potential enemies 211 260 285. His experiences of death and rejection shaped his conviction that the Forsaken needed to rely on themselves rather than seek pity or acceptance from other peoples 340 594.
Nathanos founded and led the Forsaken as they established themselves in Kalimdor, seized Maradon and Alterac, built Shadow’s End Fortress, and later reclaimed Lordaeron. His campaigns were driven initially by vengeance against Arthas and the Scourge, but he eventually concluded that revenge alone could not restore what had been lost 328 332 359 767.
Appearance
Nathanos’s appearance changed drastically between life, undeath, and his later ritual transformation. He often conceals himself beneath dark clothing and a hood.
- In life, he wore a black wolf-fur cloak, carried a full quiver, and moved silently enough to disappear into the night 45.
- As the Witherer, he had scarlet or blood-red eyes, an emaciated frame, facial scars, and a hoarse voice 208 433 621.
- At one point, he had lost an arm, leaving him unable to use a bow normally 621.
- After the Isle of Thunder ritual, his voice became clear and he could breathe again, though his heart remained still 726.
- He favors black armor and cloaks, associating darkness with concealment and peace 727.
Personality
Nathanos is intensely independent, proud, and resistant to titles, pity, or attempts to claim authority over him. He refused Alleria’s offer to make him a ranger and later declined an appointment from the Silvermoon Council, preferring to define his own place in the world 56 104.
As a commander, he is patient, calculating, and willing to use deception. He studies enemies, sets traps, manipulates rival factions into conflict, and prioritizes strategic positions over immediate victories 45 331 728. His methods can be ruthless, particularly against enemies of the Forsaken, but he also listens to subordinates such as Belmont, Meryl, Lilian, and Veronalara.
His hatred of the Scourge and distrust of the living are rooted in personal trauma rather than simple cruelty. Nathanos rejects forcibly raising the dead to strengthen the Forsaken, having personally suffered the pain of a soul being returned to its body against its will 509. He regards the Forsaken as people rather than weapons and carries the burden of securing a future for them.
Abilities & Skills
Archery
Nathanos is an exceptionally skilled archer, capable of killing a target at five hundred yards and exceeding Sylvanas’s record 56 60.
- Uses archery for stealth, ambushes, and precision kills.
- Can identify concealed threats through sound and movement, including detecting breathing beneath Windrunner Tower 252.
- Possesses a highly developed sense of smell and can recognize people by scent 61.
- Uses arrows empowered with dark energy after becoming the Witherer 594.
Swordsmanship and Close Combat
Although best known as an archer, Nathanos is a dangerous melee combatant with considerable stamina, speed, and tactical awareness.
- Defeated multiple Orc guards during his escape from Grim Batol 152.
- Gained the upper hand against Kael’thas Sunstrider in close combat by disrupting his concentration and exploiting his limited use of magic 243.
- Defeated Zul’jin by turning the troll’s own dagger against him 256.
- Fought powerful opponents including Broll, Garrosh Hellscream, demon commanders, and the Gorgon Technomancer Leader 350 418 746.
- Commands Undead Hounds and Blight Hounds in battle 186 256 468.
Mist Form
Frostmourne’s power enabled Nathanos to alternate between a solid body and a black mist-like spiritual form 496.
- Solid form allows him to physically interact and fight.
- Mist form grants flight and mobility against airborne enemies.
- A partial transformation lets him attack while airborne.
- Maintaining a partial state rapidly drains his energy and cannot be done for long 496.
Tactical Command
Nathanos is a long-range planner who directs military, intelligence, industrial, and diplomatic operations for the Forsaken.
- Founded the Wither Council and emphasized unity among the Forsaken 340.
- Established the Shadowblade intelligence network to infiltrate Azeroth 332.
- Used false Centaur tribal flags to distract enemy forces before the assault on Maradon 331.
- Exploited fear of a new plague to lure the Crimson Crusaders into an unfavorable battlefield in Alterac 728 732.
- Positioned the Forsaken between Alliance and Horde interests without fully committing to either faction 755 760.
Heart of Azeroth
After the Isle of Thunder ritual, Nathanos obtained the Heart of Azeroth and merged with it 726.
- Used its power to control a storm around the Isle of Thunder 726.
- Its Azerite power protected him during his confrontation with Garrosh and Y’Shaarj’s influence 747 748.
- The artifact can react independently to danger, as shown by its unease before Nathanos’s journey to Nazmir 769.

Relationships
- Alleria Windrunner — Nathanos’s estranged wife and the mother of his son Belorell. Their relationship was destroyed by his death, undeath, and Alleria’s attempts to hunt him, though she later chooses to let him go rather than kill him 490 628 726.
- Sylvanas Windrunner — initially his captor and later his closest emotional confidante. She gave him Lo’gresh, repeatedly aided him, accepted his altered state, and eventually embraced him despite his undeath 84 489 621 684.
- Belorell — Nathanos and Alleria’s son. Nathanos sees him in Dalaran but does not reveal himself 490.

- Belmont — Nathanos’s trusted adjutant and leader of the Shadowblades, responsible for intelligence and covert operations 323 341.
