Background / History
Family and early life
Gu Beichen grew up in a wealthy Lighthouse family, but wealth did not give him financial freedom: he recalls having no money of his own and not having tasted candy by the age of seven or eight. Watching his father and second uncle struggle against each other gave him an early familiarity with upper-class political infighting 245 311.
His relationship with his second sister, Gu Xijing, is hostile. She threatens him with a pistol while his torso is immobilized by ice, and Wang Shu intervenes. Although Gu Beichen believes she genuinely intended to kill him, he cannot bring himself to kill her. He leaves the house—which legally belongs to her—and seeks shelter with Xu Le 87 88.
Service with Team 6
Gu Beichen first appears alongside Wang Shu during the campus emergency. Against Black Cicada, he uses his fire abilities while Wang Shu fights at close range; Golden Toad’s intervention saves him from an attack from behind 30 32.
His attachment to teammates creates problems when he must make hard decisions. After Xu Le amputates Zhou Zimo’s leg to prevent a White Skeleton mutation, Bai Jing reprimands Gu Beichen for leaving the decision to others. She stresses that caring for teammates does not excuse a captain from accepting responsibility for dangerous choices 69 70.
When both he and Xu Le seek the Elemental Lightning Fruit, Xu Le argues that ice would better address Gu Beichen’s weak defenses and complement his flames. Gu Beichen accepts the frost fruit, then later sets aside his pride enough to ask Xu Le to teach him elementalization 77 78 88.
Li Shunliu and the White Haze Town mission
Gu Beichen’s feelings for Li Shunliu prevent them from being assigned together except during full-team operations: the emotional instability caused by an accident could endanger everyone. Before one mission, he asks Xu Le to protect her 90.
When Xu Le returns without Shunliu, Gu Beichen angrily demands to know why he survived when she did not. Bai Jing orders him to keep his personal feelings out of the mission and has Gan monitor his Heart Energy. A Shadow Demon subsequently approaches him through an apparent manifestation of Shunliu and directs him to retrieve objects 94 95 97.
Xu Le discovers the demon in his shadow. Gu Beichen silently signals that Xu Le should strike him, relying on elementalization to survive the attack that exposes the entity. The team expels the demon, but Guyinduo Vision continues to identify Gu Beichen as a Lightforging Guyinduo Offspring. Contact between him and Xu Le briefly produces intense, unexplained mutual hatred 98 99.
During the attempt to destroy Bai Kui with alchemical bombs, Gu Beichen’s injected Spirit Energy instead helps awaken him. Bai Kui mistakes him for his lord’s emissary and forces pure Guyinduo energy into him. Gu Beichen survives the immediate overload through elementalization, but Bai Kui later overwhelms his regeneration with repeated light-blade attacks 107.
Back in Lighthouse, Gu Beichen and Xu Le investigate Shunliu’s dormitory. Her opened and poorly resealed final letter says that she acted willingly, asks him not to investigate, and confesses that she liked him. They also discover suspicious pills after the dormitory supervisor suddenly dies 110.
Survival and Holy Temple training
Xiong Zemo apparently kills Gu Beichen alongside Xu Le, Wang Shu, and Gu Jianuo. Hours later, Gan finds him re-forming from ice and urges him to train at the Red Moon Holy Temple. They leave Lighthouse together, narrowly missing the surviving Xu Le and Wang Shu at the airship grounds 130 131.
The Holy Temple’s fierce competition breaks much of his confidence. Gan eventually leaves for Zion, giving him thirty dollars and explaining that his future growth now depends on himself. Gu Beichen maintains that he has never doubted his talent, despite his setbacks 164.
Over several months, he learns restraint and concealment. During group training, he plays dead rather than repeatedly stand up to be beaten by the instructor’s puppet. He hides both his ice ability and his advancement to Level 3, though his instructor sees through the latter. He and Luo Na are appointed to Owl and dispatched to Zion as part of a nine-person reinforcement group 232.
Reunion in Zion and double-agent work
Recognizing Xu Le in a portrait of “Xiong Nuo’an,” Gu Beichen refuses to expose him to Wang Qing. His search leads him to the Zion Progressives Building, where armed security confronts him and Luo Na. Rather than attempt an unwinnable fight, he reveals that Zion hired their Holy Temple group and shields Luo Na behind him 234 235.
After reuniting with Xu Le and Wang Shu, he warns them that Wang Xi has hired Owl to capture or kill members of Fated Death. He supplies information on the hostile Warlocks and helps draw them toward Xu Le’s operation 236 239 240.
Following Luo Na’s death, Gu Beichen declines Wang Shu’s suggestion that he simply adopt a new identity and settle in Zion. Instead, he volunteers to replace her as the Holy Temple’s spy, intending to make himself valuable and indispensable while aiding his friends 254.
Later operations
- Floating fortress: Accompanies Xu Le, Ai Li, and Wang Shu into the wreckage. Unlike Ai Li and Wang Shu, he shows no comparable memory loss or hallucinations. He helps during their escape and uses widespread flames to reveal a threat that Xu Le cannot otherwise perceive 286 287 288 289.
- Luo Juya ambush: Layers flame spells to alter the battlefield and attacks her with combined frost and fire. Wang Shu saves him from one shadow attack, while another narrowly avoids a fatal strike through Fate’s intervention 294.
- Xiong Zemo investigation: Proposes that Gu Jianuo’s mission concerned puppet research and that Luo Juya used Shunliu to interfere with Xiong Zemo’s plans. Xu Le and Wang Shu recognize that his reconstruction makes sense 304.
- Illuminati escape: Uses his Owl badge and an authoritative manner to occupy the clergy while Xu Le’s group escapes 315.
- Duo Min operation: Wins Duo Min’s trust as the Holy Temple’s Zion informant, then ambushes her to prevent Zion’s secrets from reaching the Temple. Xu Le rescues him when her water magic overwhelms him; Gu Beichen subsequently kills her with Wildfire and destroys her body 340 341 345 346.
Appearance
- Handsome enough to be described as beautiful, with somewhat feminine features 30.
- Initially carries himself with an exaggerated swagger, head raised and chest thrust forward 30.
- Wears the Night Watchers’ black clothing and coat during his service in Lighthouse 30 96.
- His elementalized body takes the form of ice, with damaged sections capable of shattering and re-forming 88 102.
- As an informant, can switch from a sloppily dressed, apparently drunken reveler to a precise, solemn operative 340.
Personality
Gu Beichen is proud, competitive, and eager to be recognized as a genius. He repeatedly measures himself against Xu Le, even interpreting Xu Le’s achievements as proof that his chosen rival is worthy of him. Successful training quickly brings back his boasting, despite temporary improvements in composure 88 99 239 240.
Beneath that arrogance, he is softhearted and deeply attached to others. He struggles to act against his sister despite her threats, reacts badly to Shunliu’s death, and initially has difficulty separating personal affection from operational responsibility 70 88 94 95.
His pursuit of strength is sincere. He swallows his pride to request Xu Le’s instruction and accepts a live-fire test because he believes that refusing to test elementalization in training would leave him unprepared against an Oddity 88.
Holy Temple training makes him more patient, cautious, and capable of hiding his intentions without eliminating his vanity. He also possesses genuine political insight, especially when dealing with elite power struggles. By the time of his Zion operations, he can maintain an undercover role and prioritize his friends’ safety over appearances 232 235 245 340.
Abilities & Skills
Flame Spell Formulas
- Wildfire: Produces sustained flames for sweeping rooms, clearing enemies, illuminating paths, and destroying bodies. Warlock fire burns through Red Moon Spirit rather than requiring ordinary combustion conditions 74 287 346.
- Flame Line: A directed fire attack used alongside ice arrows to pressure a Level 3 Oddity 102.
- Flame Explosion: Described as his strongest Spell Formula during the Bai Kui battle; releases an enormous explosive fireball 107.
- Wildfire Scorches the Plains: A sustained, wide-area formation spell whose firelight reveals an otherwise imperceptible threat 289.
- Limits: Powerful output does not overcome every speed or rank disadvantage. Bai Kui evades Flame Explosion, while Level 4 opponents place him under severe pressure 107 294 345.
Lesser Element Ice and Elementalization
- Generates frost and ice projectiles after consuming the frost fruit 78 102.
- Converts parts or all of his body into ice, surviving gunshots and rebuilding shattered limbs or even his head 88 102 107.
- Re-forms from ice after Xiong Zemo’s apparently fatal attack 130.
- Freezes himself to the ground to resist an upward-pulling force and breaks off an infected frozen leg before regenerating it 288.
- Limits: Regeneration consumes fruit energy. Repeated damage can outpace recovery, and crushing water pressure can threaten him even while elementalized 98 107 345.
Frostfire Spell
- Overlaps elemental ice and flame, using alternating heat and cold to create an attack with mixed energy properties 294.
- Threatens to worsen Luo Juya’s existing frostbite if the subsequent heat and explosion strike her injured hand 294.
Forbidden Art—Dragon’s Wrath
- A composite Secret Art developed by Chi Xiao, using Spirit Energy as the primer and Heart Energy as the catalyst 345.
- Draws on an opponent’s accumulated anger; Gu Beichen deliberately provokes Duo Min before casting it 345.
- Used during the attack that destroys the basement containing Duo Min’s intelligence 345.
- Can produce a searing ray capable of cutting through water, but is weaker without anger to fuel it 345.
Intelligence and Political Analysis
- Recognizes political maneuvering through experience with Lighthouse’s upper-class family disputes 245.
- Conceals his advancement and ice ability during Holy Temple training 232.
- Uses his official Owl credentials to misdirect Illuminati clergy 315.
- Maintains a Holy Temple informant identity while coordinating with Xu Le; Duo Min initially considers him unusually reliable and recommends further training resources for him 340 341.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Steam Locomotive — His transport for the trip to District C’s Black Market with Xu Le and Wang Shu 78.
- Owl identification and badge — Issued upon his appointment to the Holy Temple’s external armed organization; later used to assert authority before Illuminati clergy 232 315.
- Poisoned fruit knife — Used to open his ambush against Duo Min 345.
Relationships
- Xu Le — Close friend, rival, elementalization instructor, and eventual leader. Their frequent insults coexist with repeated rescues and firm loyalty; Gu Beichen ultimately declares that he believes in Xu Le rather than a city or faction 88 98 235 345 346.
- Wang Shu — Roommate, close friend, and frequent protector. Gu Beichen calls him “Little Shu”; Wang Shu helps test his elementalization and repeatedly intervenes to save him 32 87 88 294.
- Bai Jing — Team 6 captain and mentor. Corrects his failures of judgment, stresses his responsibilities as a Night Watcher, and arranges for his emotional condition to be monitored 70 88 95.
- Gan — Senior teammate and guide. Escorts him to the Holy Temple, supports him while he settles in, and leaves him money before departing for Zion 130 131 164.
- Li Shunliu — Romantic interest whose feelings are reciprocated in her final letter. Her death destabilizes him and becomes the opening through which the Shadow Demon approaches him 90 94 95 110.
- Gu Xijing — His second sister. Their relationship is hostile, but he remains unwilling to kill her after she threatens his life 87 88.
- Luo Na — Fellow Owl recruit and mission partner. Her death grieves him, though he responds with greater restraint than after Shunliu’s death and volunteers to take over her spy role 232 235 254.
- Duo Min — Holy Temple superior whom he deceives while working undercover. He later ambushes and kills her with Xu Le’s assistance 340 341 345 346.
