Childhood in Lighthouse

Chi Xiao grew up in a prosperous Upper City family in Lighthouse. She remembers a happy childhood and being praised as an exceptional child. At ten, a political upheaval destroyed her family. Her parents hid her from the initial attack, but she emerged to confront the Night Watchers carrying it out 131 280.

She fought her way out of Lighthouse and wiped out a Night Watchers squad, but lost a hand, a leg, and her sight during the catastrophe. She survived while severely injured and blind before being rescued. The experience made the pursuit of strength and victory central to her life 514.

Chi Xiao later identified Yu Long as one of the people responsible for the destruction of her family. Yu Long’s actions were connected to a foreseen fate she had sought to prevent 321 326.

Mercenary and One-Eyed Owl

After leaving Lighthouse, Chi Xiao became a mercenary in Tianrui Lifeng. At fourteen, she single-handedly killed a lord-level Ancient God. Her subsequent development was obscure until she reappeared publicly at twenty as a member of Owl, the Red Moon Holy Temple’s enforcement organization 131.

As the One-Eyed Owl, she formed the legendary Black-Red Combination with the Murmuring Owl. Her duties included confronting invading evil gods; she killed Death’s Nail while assigned to respond to its intrusion 131 279 280.

Reformist Ideals

Chi Xiao helped found the Reformists of Tianrui Lifeng rather than merely joining them. She sought to transform the world, end the Dark Age, and separate the Red Moon Holy Temple from the Red Moon itself 326 480.

Her association with Xiao/Dawn became increasingly strained. Although she shared its stated dream, she rejected Cangming’s methods and doubted many of its members. Unable to replace her teacher herself, she eventually began considering Xu Le as an alternative leader 403 480.

Appearance

Chi Xiao is recognizable by her red clothing, fiery red hair, black left eyepatch, and conspicuous mechanical limbs 38 58 300 325.

Personality

Chi Xiao is aloof, blunt, and difficult to befriend. She explicitly distinguishes difficulty trusting others from disbelief in affection: losing her family strengthened her belief in family bonds, friendship, and love. Ding Ke was her only acknowledged friend before Xu Le earned the same place 343 357.

She is intensely devoted to training and combat, with little experience of ordinary leisure or food. Nevertheless, she does not treat strength as permission to mistreat civilians. When Lighthouse passengers stare at her prostheses, she tolerates their curiosity; she credits her experiences in Tianrui Lifeng with teaching her not to abuse power 300 386.

Her straightforward reputation conceals considerable intelligence. She adapts rapidly in battle, learns to disguise her intentions, and increasingly uses silence and carefully arranged circumstances to pursue political goals. Her plan to replace Cangming with Xu Le is deliberate rather than impulsive 447 480.

Chi Xiao accepts self-sacrifice for her ideals more readily than the sacrifice of people she cares about. Xu Le’s apparent death drives her beyond her limits, while his later willingness to sacrifice himself and his tree deeply unsettles her 501 503 505.
