Appearance
- Build: Lean and muscular 5.
- Features: Handsome 5.
- Clothing: Azure battle armor at Roger’s ascension celebration 5.
Personality
Hagson treats his subordinates sincerely and encourages newly ascended deities to address him as a brother rather than as chief. He hosts Roger’s celebratory banquet, provides the customary resources for a new deity, and ensures Allen receives his artifacts even when tribal business forces his celebration to be postponed 5 6 12.
His generosity coexists with ruthless resource management. He spares his own tribe’s Sanctuary members because they are valuable workers, while ordering large-scale harvesting of souls from wilderness inhabitants. His ambitions include destroying the Black Bat Tribe, controlling the surrounding territory, and making soul collection easier 8 11.
Hagson recognizes when another person’s strength surpasses his own. After witnessing Roger’s victory, he willingly nominates him as chief. Later, comfortable access to Soul Gold Beads dulls Hagson’s drive to cultivate; he volunteers for a patrol because he believes danger will restore that motivation 21 24.
Background / History
Chief of the Fire Rhino Tribe
Hagson leads the Fire Rhino Tribe as a Midgod in a region where several neighboring chiefs hold the same rank. Before Roger becomes a deity, Hagson suffers lasting soul damage during a clash with Black Bat. He can suppress the injury temporarily, but needs a large quantity of soul essence to recover 2 6.
Roger’s ascension through the Death Edict gives Hagson hope of obtaining that essence. He welcomes Roger into the tribe’s leadership, assigning him four hundred Sanctuary experts, one thousand Fire Rhinos, a vote in major matters, and a share of Fire Rhino horn proceeds. He also gives Roger a Lowgod longsword and armor 5 6.
Soul-Essence Partnership
Hagson supplies Roger with the legacy of Charles, a deceased Death Edict Highgod. The books are Hagson’s most valuable asset, but he cannot use their techniques himself because he cultivates wind. Their transfer gives Roger a foundation for researching soul refining 6 7.
When Roger grasps the fundamentals, Hagson mobilizes his subordinates to gather Sanctuary souls. Within ten days, he delivers a crystal ball containing approximately twenty to thirty thousand souls. Their initial agreement divides the resulting essence equally 8 9.
The partnership heals Hagson’s injury and becomes a source of strength for the tribe’s deities. Expanding soul hunts drive nearby Sanctuary beings away, forcing Hagson to venture into other tribes’ territories. During one expedition, another Midgod ambushes his group near Black Bat territory; Hagson credits his recovery with enabling his survival 10 11 15.
After Roger reaches Midgod and can refine Soul Gold Beads, Hagson changes the division to sixty percent for Roger and forty percent for himself. Hagson’s share also supports rewards for subordinates and payment to allied tribes 17.
War and Transfer of Leadership
Hagson secretly allies with Beverly of the Black Wolf Tribe and Croya of the Night Wind Tribe. He originally proposes that Roger become a second chief and govern alongside him after their victory. Anticipating an attack, he brings both allied chiefs to the Fire Rhino Tribe months before Black Bat strikes 11 18.
During the battle, Hagson and Beverly engage Black Bat. They then use ranged attacks to impede his escape while Roger pursues and kills him. Hagson acknowledges Roger’s decisive contribution and proposes that all of Black Bat’s spoils belong to him 20.
Hagson oversees the remaining spoils and leads the occupation of Black Bat’s territory. The surviving inhabitants join the Fire Rhino Tribe, as do Beverly and Croya’s tribes. Recognizing his own insufficient strength, Hagson publicly nominates Roger as the new chief. He accepts Roger’s rules and remains when the tribe is renamed the Nether Luo Tribe 21 22.
Service Under Roger
Hagson accompanies Roger and Beverly on a year-long territorial patrol. He spots Bell’s group during their survey and witnesses Roger defeat and soul-enslave Mia, the Nether Fox. The demonstration leaves him privately wondering whether Roger could have enslaved him as well 24 25 27 28.
By giving a captured Midgod Godhead to a trusted subordinate, Hagson builds the largest direct following within the tribe. He and his followers obey Roger, but some of those followers evade Allen’s orders, particularly while Hagson is away on patrol 29.
Hagson continues cultivating after Roger reaches Highgod and later helps refine Netherlo City’s plans and its system for admitting newcomers 31 34.
