Background / History

Earlier sealing

Mito Uzumaki was an earlier host of the original Nine-Tails and sealed him inside Kushina before her death. During Mito’s own childbirth, his seal had nearly collapsed, establishing childbirth as a particularly dangerous period for a female jinchūriki 164 305.

Shōma Senju remembered witnessing an earlier Nine-Tails rampage and seeing Hashirama Senju subdue him 177.

The Nine-Tails Incident

After learning that Kushina was pregnant, Obito planned to exploit the weakening of her seal during childbirth. Black Zetsu had taught him how to control Nine-Tails through the Sharingan, supplementing the methods inherited from Madara 164.

Obito abducted Kushina, entered her mental realm, and forced Nine-Tails under his control. With Obito’s assistance, the beast broke through the weakened seal and emerged from Kushina. Obito first directed him to kill her, then summoned him into Konoha after Minato rescued her 165 166.

Nine-Tails devastated the village with his tails and chakra, while Konoha’s defenders struggled to injure him. Minato diverted a Tailed Beast Bomb aimed at Hokage Rock. Xia Yan and Lizard Maru then engaged the beast, using senjutsu and Wood Release to contain his advance 166 167 168 169.

After Nine-Tails was freed from Obito’s control, he still had to be restrained and resealed. Minato transported him outside Konoha, where Xia Yan’s Wood Dragon immobilized him and drained his chakra 169 170 171.

Kushina’s weakened body could no longer withstand the complete beast. Minato used the Reaper Death Seal to extract Nine-Tails’ Yin chakra into himself, dividing the beast between himself and Kushina. Xia Yan subsequently revived Minato, and both hosts survived. Naruto received no Nine-Tails seal 171 172 173 199.

Little Nine-Tails’ creation

After the incident, Xia Yan obtained a beginner Nine-Tails chakra seed and planted it near his heart. Its cultivation consumed his chakra; accelerated growth eventually produced a fruit that created a genuine, independently conscious Nine-Tails when eaten 177 178.

The new fox inherited the original beast’s memories but possessed his own personality. Because Xia Yan’s chakra was part of his body, he instinctively regarded Xia Yan as a father figure and chose to remain with him 178.

Partnership and fusion experiments

Xia Yan initially used Little Nine-Tails’ chakra to cultivate Fire Release and Sealing Jutsu seeds. He also kept the Nine-Tails chakra collected by Kazuma for the fox to consume, rather than handing the genuine scroll to Hiruzen 178 185.

Little Nine-Tails later became the personality Xia Yan wanted to preserve at the center of a possible Ten-Tails. The successful integration of Three-Tails chakra demonstrated that additional tailed-beast powers could be linked through Xia Yan’s chakra without replacing the fox’s consciousness 247.

When Mito questioned the presence of another Nine-Tails inside Xia Yan, he attributed its creation to nurturing chakra and feeding it Yin–Yang Release. Little Nine-Tails privately recognized this as a lie: Xia Yan had not understood Yin–Yang Release when he created him 305.

Appearance

• Original Nine-Tails: An enormous demon fox with nine tails, described as mountain-sized. His extraction from Kushina is accompanied by dense red chakra 165 170.
• Sharingan control: Three-tomoe Sharingan patterns appear in his eyes after Obito subjugates him 165.
• Little Nine-Tails: Initially a juvenile fox. Even much later, he can appear as a fluffy, sleepy-looking fox small enough to sit in Xia Yan’s hand 178 305.
• After Ryūmyaku absorption: Xia Yan estimates his crouching height at forty to fifty meters and his standing height at seventy to eighty meters. He can dissolve his body into red chakra and return inside Xia Yan 188.
• Chakra manifestation: Stage Two allows Xia Yan to project a giant golden Nine-Tails; this is distinct from the fox’s red-chakra bodily form 188 212.

Personality

The original Nine-Tails initially treats Obito with cold hostility and recognizes the danger of his Sharingan. He resists both the dōjutsu’s control and his later resealing. His relationship with Minato develops differently: after approximately two years of persistent contact, they can communicate normally and have formed a measure of friendship. Minato comes to view him as proud, prickly, lonely, and widely misunderstood 165 171 246.

Little Nine-Tails trusts Xia Yan despite inheriting the original’s hostility toward Wood Release users and sealing techniques. His attachment comes partly from Xia Yan’s chakra forming a component of his own existence. He is cooperative in battle, frequently sleeps, and is capable of dry private criticism—particularly when Xia Yan invents an explanation for his creation. His inherited memories also leave him unfriendly toward Mito, although he understands why she is sensitive to his presence 178 247 305.

Chakra Reserves and Recovery

• Original: Possesses enough chakra to fire a Tailed Beast Bomb without appearing to need the recovery Xia Yan expects of other tailed beasts 169.
• Regeneration: Injuries inflicted by Hiruzen recover much faster than the shoulder wound caused by Xia Yan’s senjutsu-enhanced Water Severing Wave 167.
• Little Nine-Tails: Supplies chakra for Xia Yan’s seed cultivation and combat techniques 178.
• Growth: Can strengthen himself by consuming large quantities of special chakra or cultivated Nine-Tails Fruits; later system entries broaden this to advanced tailed-beast fruits 185 321.

Nine-Tails Chakra Mode

Little Nine-Tails grants Xia Yan access to two documented stages of chakra mode 189 212.

• Stage One: Requires Xia Yan to control and merge the supplied chakra with his own. His initial attempt instead produces a red cloak and emerging tails before he corrects the process 189.
• Physical enhancement: Greatly increases speed and strength. Xia Yan assesses his Stage One speed as comparable to the Fourth Raikage’s, though below space-traversing techniques such as Flying Thunder God 189.
• Emotional sensing: Enables detection of goodwill and malice, with clearer perception in Stage Two 189 212.
• Stage Two: Allows full use of Nine-Tails’ power and the projection of a giant chakra body capable of withstanding massed ninjutsu attacks 212.
• Limits: Trust is not the initial obstacle; Little Nine-Tails first needs to master his own enlarged power. Later, sustained Stage Two use still approaches a time or endurance limit 189 213.

Tailed Beast Bomb

• Original: Forms and fires a massive black chakra projectile from his mouth, including the attack directed at Hokage Rock 168.
• Through Xia Yan: Little Nine-Tails supplies the Yin–Yang chakra needed to compress a bomb in Xia Yan’s palm 190.
• Control requirements: The technique demands precise chakra manipulation and extreme compression; Xia Yan later gains control over the bombs’ size 190 213.

Tailed-Beast Fusion

• Little Nine-Tails can incorporate another tailed beast’s power while retaining his awareness and personality 247.
• Xia Yan’s chakra acts as the connection between the compatible powers. Their incomplete chakra continuity initially prevents complete fusion 247.
• The Three-Tails portion can grow alongside Little Nine-Tails and draw on his power. He also claims control sufficient to provide Three-Tails Chakra Mode 247.

Vulnerabilities and Restraints

• Sharingan: Obito overrides the original’s resistance using his dōjutsu and Madara’s control methods. Other Uchiha applying genjutsu place pressure on that control during the attack 165 168.
• Wood Release: Drains his chakra and strengthens restraints such as Xia Yan’s Wood Dragon, making brute-force resistance ineffective 169 171.
• Sealing Jutsu: Uzumaki seals can confine him; the Reaper Death Seal divides and seals his Yin chakra despite his resistance 164 171.
