History

Founding Konoha

The Uchiha and Senju fought for over a thousand years, although they occasionally cooperated against other clans. Their leaders, Madara Uchiha and Hashirama Senju, eventually set aside their rivalry and founded Konoha to end the warfare 170.

When Madara later abandoned Konoha, the Uchiha refused to follow him because they wanted to preserve their peaceful lives. Leadership subsequently passed to the branch from which Uchiha Fugaku descended. Madara’s later attack on the village nevertheless left the remaining clan facing suspicion and distrust 195 301.

Isolation and Factional Conflict

Policies under the Second and Third Hokage pushed the Uchiha toward near-total political isolation. Internally, the clan split between doves, who sought peaceful coexistence with Konoha, and hawks, who advocated a coup 4.

Their control of the Military Police Force did not translate into influence over Konoha’s leadership. Treating the force as a private clan department discouraged other departments from accepting Uchiha personnel, while its declining effectiveness allowed other shinobi groups to take over parts of its work 198.

Minato Namikaze proposed admitting more Uchiha into other departments to rebuild relations, but senior officials opposed the proposal. At this stage, the clan had no members in the Anbu and struggled to obtain information about it 114 115.

Uchiha Shin’s Alliance with Xia Yan

Elder Uchiha Shin sought out Xia Yan after learning that Kakashi, the Fourth Hokage’s student, served under him. Shin hoped to establish a connection with Konoha’s inner circle and secure an Anbu position for Shisui Uchiha 115 143 163.

Xia Yan redirected Shin’s attention toward replacing Fugaku rather than perpetuating the factional stalemate. He advised Shin to wait for a leadership failure and begin reforming the Military Police Force by admitting civilian shinobi and members of other clans 152 163.

Discovering Xia Yan’s Senju identity initially unsettled Shin. After studying clan history and discussing the issue with his granddaughter, he accepted that cooperation offered the best chance of protecting the Uchiha—even if it left him politically subordinate to Xia Yan 169 195.

Nine-Tails Incident

The clan’s combat-capable shinobi assembled at the Military Police Force under the Fourth Hokage’s standing orders. Fugaku ordered them to move out against the Nine-Tails, and the assembled elites answered him as their squad leader rather than their clan head, emphasizing their shared military duty despite factional differences 167.

Fugaku’s retreat during the confrontation with Danzo gave Shin an opportunity to challenge his leadership. In the aftermath, Hiruzen Sarutobi surrendered a substantial share of his interests to the Uchiha to shield Danzo from criticism over Root’s failure to deploy 167 195.

Police Reforms and Internal Crackdown

Shin began recruiting overlooked, lower-status clan members and introducing outsiders into the police units he controlled. The reforms improved one company but intensified conflict with unreformed units and with Fugaku, who continued trying to balance the factions 197 202 216.

With Anbu support, Shin detained opposing elders and moved against Great Elder Uchiha Shen. Shen’s defender, Uchiha Tatsumi, defeated Sora before fighting Kakashi; Xia Yan ultimately killed Tatsumi. Shin secretly spared Shen, believing he needed an ally capable of helping him resist Xia Yan’s influence 219 222 223.

A separate attack by Orochimaru and Root exposed Fugaku’s Mangekyō Sharingan. Xia Yan intervened, defeated Fugaku, and took one of his eyes, then arranged for Orochimaru to stage an escape with the unconscious Itachi. The public account later credited Xia Yan with defeating Orochimaru and recovering Itachi 226 228 231.

Leadership Election

Under the Fifth Hokage, the Uchiha prospered, but official support flowed through Shin and the Military Police Force rather than Fugaku. At the Fifth Hokage’s first reform meeting, more than ten people accompanied Shin, compared with only two or three accompanying the clan head 270 301.

Years later, the clan convened an election to replace Fugaku. Itachi became the first attendee to support Shin’s proposal, causing even conservative supporters of Fugaku to abandon him. Shin replaced Fugaku, while Fugaku’s family retained a future within Konoha 302 303 304.

Organization and Culture

Leadership and Factions

Group or Position Function and Outlook
Clan leader Traditionally drawn from a particular family branch. Replacing a living leader through an election was considered an extraordinary and disgraceful rupture 301 302.
Elders Influential figures capable of directing factions and police personnel; prominent examples include Shin and Great Elder Shen 202 219.
Dove faction Sought peaceful coexistence and restoration of the clan’s rights. Some members resisted Shin’s willingness to use force against fellow Uchiha 4 216.
Hawk faction Advocated seizing control of Konoha through a coup 4 301.
Shin’s supporters Pursued integration through police reform, Anbu service, and cooperation with the Hokage 197 219 302.
  • Clan pride: After the Senju’s decline, many Uchiha regarded their clan as Konoha’s foremost, with only the Hyuga considered serious rivals 197.
  • Respect for strength: The clan respected powerful individuals, provided those individuals did not harbor hostile intentions toward it 167.
  • Political participation: Only Uchiha shinobi could attend the leadership-election meeting; ordinary clan members were excluded 302.
  • Clan identity: Shikaku Nara identified the Uchiha as one example of shinobi who increasingly placed clan identity ahead of their shared identity as Konoha ninja 251.

Military Police Force

  • Original problem: Uchiha dominance turned a village department into an effectively private clan institution, worsening relations with residents and other departments 198 221.
  • Reform policy: Xia Yan insisted that the force belonged to Konoha. Shin was instructed to recruit civilian shinobi and members of other clans into mixed teams 163 197.
  • Consolidation: After defeating rival elders, Shin recruited many of Shen’s former followers and sought his help to secure the remaining resistant division 240.
  • Later standing: By the Fifth Hokage’s accession, the force was closely connected to him and became a major channel for support to the Uchiha 270 301.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

The clan’s characteristic dōjutsu uses Yin Release to enhance perception, copying, and genjutsu 245.

  • Combat insight: Exceptional dynamic vision reveals an opponent’s attacks and direction of movement, enabling precise evasions and counters 219.
  • Technique copying: Its visual perception allows users to copy ninjutsu 57.
  • Genjutsu: Skilled users can disrupt an opponent’s actions and combine illusions with close-range combat 219 226.
  • Chakra manipulation: Obito used Sharingan power to control the Nine-Tails; its Yin Release is particularly suited to manipulating chakra 164.
  • Limits: Obstructing the user’s vision and attacking from another direction can counter its observational advantage. Equal tomoe counts also do not imply equal skill 219 220.

Mangekyō Sharingan

An advanced Sharingan form whose awakening and abilities reflect the user’s emotional state. Awakening it is not simply a consequence of becoming stronger, and knowledge of its existence had become obscure even within the clan 146 226.

  • Individual abilities: Fugaku’s eyes exerted a disruptive influence on Orochimaru’s chakra, which Xia Yan interpreted as genjutsu 226.
  • Susanoo: Provides formidable offense and defense against groups as well as individual opponents 159.
  • Physical cost: Fugaku’s eyes burdened him in battle; his fear of blindness had previously discouraged him from using them 227 301.
  • Shisui’s awakening: Extreme emotions during his confrontation with Tsunade awakened abilities producing inextinguishable black flames and easing Susanoo use without excessive damage to his eyes. Xia Yan identified the flames as likely Amaterasu 307.

Integrated Combat

  • Combined techniques: Tatsumi demonstrated highly coordinated genjutsu, taijutsu, and ninjutsu, overwhelming another three-tomoe Sharingan user 219.
  • Fire Release: Both Tatsumi and Fugaku used Fire Release in combat; Fugaku combined frontal flames with flanking movement to prevent Orochimaru from escaping 221 226 227.
  • Body Flicker: Shisui’s technique produced damaging afterimages separated by extremely short intervals, making his movements difficult to read even with the Sharingan 216.
