Background / History

Enrollment and First Mission

Before his transfer, Panda reports that Yuta seriously injured four classmates at his former school by stuffing them into a metal locker. His enrollment at Jujutsu High receives special approval because of his unusual circumstances 5 6.

His introduction to Maki Zenin, Panda, and Toge Inumaki immediately becomes dangerous. The cursed energy emanating from him alarms all three, and Maki throws a sword past his head. Rika manifests to defend him despite his pleas for her to stop. Wangchuan restrains her with gravity, then releases her after reassuring Yuta that his suggestion of taking her as payment was a joke 6 7.

Gojo pairs Yuta with Maki for his first mission at an elementary school. Yuta is visibly frightened before entering; afterward, he emerges carrying a dusty, exhausted Maki on his back, without her appearing seriously injured 7 8 9.

Seeking Rika’s Resurrection

After hearing Wangchuan discuss magic and cursed-tool creation, Yuta asks whether he can bring Rika back to life. He explains that her soul remains in his ring and that he can still feel her presence 10 11.

Wangchuan says resurrection is theoretically possible but warns that he has not mastered the necessary magic or settled its ritual and material requirements. When told that the service will cost money, Yuta promises to grow stronger and earn enough through missions. He runs off before Wangchuan can name a price 11.

The possibility becomes Yuta’s overriding motivation. Gojo later confronts Wangchuan about the danger of giving him false hope; Wangchuan subsequently confirms that resurrection is possible and explains its connection to the soul passage commonly called Hell. Rika’s resurrection has not occurred in the supplied chapters 16 37.

Geto’s Interest

Gojo discovers Suguru Geto’s cursed residue at a mission site visited by Yuta and Inumaki. He and Wangchuan conclude that Geto is targeting Rika, whose enormous cursed energy makes her especially valuable to his Cursed Spirit Manipulation 33.

Geto later confirms that he needs Rika’s power for his intended war against the world. Despite Gojo and Wangchuan’s protection, he plans to approach Yuta and Rika at the Kyoto–Tokyo Goodwill Event 47.

Appearance

Yuta is thin and pale, with a tired appearance that is especially pronounced when he first joins his classmates 6.

  • Eyes: Dark, with deep circles underneath 2 6.
  • Uniform: A white Jujutsu High jacket, initially described with a slightly wrinkled hem 6.
  • Accessory: A dull silver ring worn on his left ring finger, associated with Rika’s soul 10 11.

Personality

Yuta initially behaves with marked politeness and anxiety. He hesitates before approaching others, speaks softly, and worries about being presumptuous even when asking Gojo a simple question about strength. He views Special Grade status as responsibility and evidence of acceptance, rather than primarily as a source of income 2 11.

His devotion to Rika turns that uncertainty into intense resolve. Earning money becomes important specifically because it might secure her resurrection, driving a training and mission schedule that even Maki struggles to sustain 11 16 37.

His growing strength does not remove his concern for others. He stops immediately after disarming Maki to ask whether she is hurt, and he celebrates Inumaki’s new cursed tool chiefly because it reduces the injuries caused by Cursed Speech 39 46.

Abilities & Skills

Cursed Energy and Perception

  • His initial presence releases thick, malicious cursed energy that makes Maki, Panda, and Inumaki instinctively tense 6.
  • Later training produces a notable increase in cursed energy density; residual energy from his sparring makes nearby grass tremble 39.
  • Detects a brief disturbance near the principal’s office before Maki notices anything. Panda also confirms sensing it 45.

Control of Rika Orimoto

  • Rika is a Special Grade Vengeful Cursed Spirit who manifests to protect him from perceived threats 6.
  • His early attempts to stop her attack on his classmates fail, requiring Wangchuan’s intervention 6 7.
  • Through sustained training and mission experience, he develops much greater control over her 37.
  • Rika’s exceptional cursed energy reserves are explicitly identified as the reason Geto wants to obtain her 33 47.

Swordsmanship and Mobility

  • Uses bamboo swords in training, exploiting blind spots and difficult attack angles to break Maki’s guard 39.
  • Combines steady footwork, precise parries, and evasive movement against simultaneous attacks from Maki and Panda 41.
  • His improvement is rapid enough to surprise Nanami and prompt Panda and Inumaki to describe him as a freak 39.

Resilience

  • Panda selects him to test Inumaki’s enhanced Cursed Speech because he is strong and can withstand punishment 45.
  • Recovers after being blasted backward by “Get lost,” then returns enthusiastically after “Fly!” launches him more than a dozen meters into the air 45 46.
  • These tests demonstrate resilience, not immunity: both commands successfully move him against his will 45 46.

Equipment / Items

  • Silver ring — Worn on his left ring finger. Yuta identifies it as the location of Rika’s soul and senses her familiar warmth through it 10 11.
  • Bamboo sword — Used for sparring with Maki and practicing against Panda’s coordinated attacks 39 41.

Relationships

  • Rika Orimoto — Protective cursed spirit whose resurrection becomes his central goal. He pleads for her safety when Wangchuan restrains her 7 11.
  • Satoru Gojo — Teacher who introduces him to his classmates, assigns missions, monitors his growth, and questions whether Wangchuan can fulfill his hopes 6 7 37.
  • Wangchuan — Instructor and potential means of resurrecting Rika. Yuta values his precise guidance and believes he is generous toward people he cares about 11 41 45.
  • Maki Zenin — First mission partner, frequent sparring opponent, and mission backup. Her initial hostility develops into demanding training and sustained cooperation 6 8 37 39.
  • Toge Inumaki — Classmate and mission partner. Yuta willingly helps test the Harmony Box and praises its ability to reduce Inumaki’s suffering 33 45 46.
  • Panda — Classmate and training partner who attacks alongside Maki and nominates Yuta as Inumaki’s test opponent 41 45.
  • Suguru Geto — Targets Yuta because he wants to seize Rika’s power 33 47.
