Background

Naraku was reborn into Konoha’s small Shihōin Clan after dying in an accident in his previous life. His earlier memories—including knowledge of the Naruto world—began returning when he first extracted chakra. He initially had no system and relied on his own talents 1.

He attributed his exceptional mental and spiritual strength to having lived twice. Combined with excellent chakra control and learning ability, this made him a celebrated Academy genius whose reputation rivaled Kakashi Hatake’s. Although Kakashi won more of their childhood spars, Naraku eventually caught up with and surpassed him 1 4 31.

Naraku became Tsunade’s personal disciple and succeeded her as head of the Medical Emergency Response Unit after she left Konoha. Drawing on experience running a hospital in his previous life, he introduced hospital reforms, developed medical techniques, and discovered new medicinal herbs, helping make Konoha Hospital renowned throughout the shinobi world 1 4.

The Shihōin Clan numbered fewer than one hundred people and possessed no powerful kekkei genkai. Its records described an earlier alliance with the Senju Clan during the Warring States Period. As clan head, Naraku improved his relatives’ livelihoods by securing nursing and administrative work for them in the medical organization 2 5 20.

Naraku is a dark-haired young man with slightly tousled, short black hair 9 24.

Personality

Naraku is ambitious, pragmatic, and willing to challenge authority. Rather than reject the dangerous assignments attached to his ANBU appointment, he accepted them as an opportunity to prove himself and eventually take the commander’s position. He also studied the Promotion System’s rules closely enough to exploit a self-appointment loophole 4 35.

His irreverence often takes the form of teasing and conspicuous boasting. He makes Kakashi pay for meals, objects when Naruto addresses him as an older man, and claims that Naruto will become the strongest ninja—with himself as the exception. These habits coexist with genuine concern for his friends, subordinates, and clan 4 20 24 29.

Naraku openly rejects Naruto’s mistreatment, even when Hiruzen insists that his decisions are final. He encourages Naruto through Might Guy’s example of persistence, and argues that younger ninja can surpass their predecessors 23 24 26 29.

• Naraku discovers that many of his thirty-seven assigned ANBU members are former Root operatives and that he is expected to undertake particularly dangerous missions 1 4.
• For his first S-rank assignment, he leads an attack on a covert Sunagakure–Iwagakure supply exchange in the Land of Birds. His team wins the engagement, and he retrieves a scroll containing Sunagakure’s gold dust 7 9.
• He subsequently eliminates eight Iwagakure pursuers using elementalization, medical techniques, and overwhelming firepower 11.

Building an Independent Power Base

• Naraku frees Tsuki and other former Root members from their tongue seals, gaining loyal subordinates and intelligence about Danzō’s secret base at No. 0 Training Ground 14.

Obito’s Ambush

• While away on missions, Naraku receives intelligence about Deidara’s defection and forwards it to Hiruzen. He later stops in the Land of Hot Water, where White Zetsu attempts to lure him into an ambush 48.
• Naraku kills the disguised Zetsu and evades Obito’s opening Kamui attack. During the ensuing battle, he uses elementalization to survive Wood Release and severs Obito’s left arm 48 49.
