Power Progression

Background / History

Kurikara originated as a Lottery-drawn Tensa Zangetsu. The system explained that the reward’s identity reflected Naraku’s subconscious preferences and that renaming it would preserve its inherited abilities while making it truly his own Zanpakutō. During meditation, Naraku heard a call within his consciousness and named the sword Kurikara, triggering its transformation 36.

The sword was forged using Naraku’s soul as its template. Its emergence strengthened his soul, which in turn increased his mental strength and chakra reserves. When Naraku later inspected his status panel, the newly displayed Soul entry bore Kurikara’s name; the system attributed this to the unique condition of his soul 56.

Appearance

• Blade: Completely straight and pitch-black, replacing Tensa Zangetsu’s slight curve. Its surface appears to swallow light and draw in the viewer’s gaze 36.
• Dragon motif: A faint black dragon appears to roam within the blade. After the Shusui and Tenken absorption, it is described as breathing flames, with intermittently visible claws and scales 36 76.
• Hilt: Bears intricate, nearly invisible patterns resembling fish scales 36.
• Scabbard: Pitch-black, decorated with plum blossoms and a coiling golden dragon 36.
• Post–Ryūjin Jakka changes: Occasional dark-red flashes appear across the blade, which radiates heat; its overall appearance otherwise remains unchanged 298.

Abilities & Skills

Wielder Enhancement and Recovery

• Retains Tensa Zangetsu’s ability to increase Naraku’s strength, movement speed, and attack speed, allowing combat beyond his normal limits 36.
• Automatically restores stamina and chakra while Naraku holds it in battle. This recovery supports him during his prolonged exchange with Might Guy 36 45.
• Amplifies every Ninjutsu Naraku uses; absorbing the Kusanagi Sword improves its recovery rate and other existing abilities 36 114.
• Combines with Naraku’s other enhancements. He uses Kurikara, Sun Breathing, and the Gate of Opening together for an explosive increase in physical performance 43.

Weapon Devouring

• Produces a spinning black hole or black hole-like distortion along its blade, drawing in and destroying weapons to absorb their power 75 297.
• Is initially described as capable of devouring any Zanpakutō. Its consumption of Shusui and the Kusanagi Sword demonstrates that suitable weapons are not limited to Zanpakutō 36 75 114.
• Can gain new abilities as well as strengthen existing ones. Absorbing Ryūjin Jakka grants all of that sword’s abilities 75 298.
• Absorption time varies: Naraku notices that Ryūjin Jakka takes longer to devour than previous swords 297.

Soul-Cutting

• Anyone wounded by Kurikara suffers corresponding damage to their soul. This ability awakens after the absorption of Shusui and Tenken 75.
• Orochimaru: Severing his right arm also severs the corresponding soul portion. Naraku explains that reincarnation cannot restore it, distinguishing this damage from the reversible sealing of the Reaper Death Seal 117.
• Killer B: Soul injuries leave him unconscious for an extended period despite the recovery available to a jinchūriki 241.
• Madara Uchiha: A slash causes delayed blurred vision and severe mental pain while preventing his chest wound from healing. Naraku states that the damage would persist even after resurrection 706.
• Ōtsutsuki Isshiki: His relatively powerful soul limits one injury’s immediate effect to brief dizziness. The narration contrasts this with an ordinary ninja, whose soul could be scattered by even a graze 1148.

Fire Manipulation and Healing Suppression

• Naraku infuses Kurikara with Fire Release after mastering Sun Breathing. This developed technique causes painful wounds that heal poorly, preventing Obito’s severed-arm wound from closing despite his Hashirama Cells 49.
• Absorbing Ryūjin Jakka greatly enhances both Kurikara’s abilities and Naraku’s Fire Release 298.
• Kurikara can consume Fire Release. Against Madara, Naraku personally draws and compresses the flames into the blade; the narration confirms that Kurikara could also perform this absorption itself 706.
• Its later wounds can erase bodily tissue, slow self-healing, and shorten lifespan, making it particularly dangerous to Isshiki’s already short-lived body 1148.

Getsuga Tenshō

• Compresses Naraku’s chakra at the blade’s tip before releasing it as an extremely powerful crescent-shaped blade light 36.
• During the fight with Might Guy, a black crescent carves a long chasm through the ground and bisects a distant mountaintop 45.
• Against Kaguya’s giant transformed body, Naraku releases seven crescent slashes in succession 824.
• Remains an aimed attack rather than an unavoidable strike: Isshiki evades its blade light by shrinking with Sukunahikona 1157.

Immovable Wisdom King

• Creates a giant manifestation while Naraku holds Kurikara, consuming stamina, chakra, and mental energy 75.
• Appears as a blue-black god of war with a third eye, flame markings across its half-bare upper body, and a long black blade 106.
• Becomes stronger after Kurikara absorbs the Kusanagi Sword 114.
• Demonstrates immense physical strength by punching a mountain summit loose, lifting the resulting boulder, and carrying it onward 441.

Rising Sun Blade

• Inherited from Ryūjin Jakka, this state concentrates the heat of Naraku’s flames along Kurikara’s edge, erasing what it touches 756.
• Erases sections of Obito’s Six Paths Staff, even though the staff is formed from Truth-Seeking Orbs 756.
• Later erases Momoshiki’s chakra sphere, Isshiki’s black chakra rods, and three Black-Red Cubes 1142.
• Documented limitation: It fails to erase Amenonuhoko during Naraku’s close-quarters fight with Obito. Naraku speculates that the weapon’s resistance depends on its wielder’s firm resolve; this explanation is presented as his inference 761.

Ownership, Summoning, and Durability

• Materializes at Naraku’s waist when he reaches for it and vanishes again when released or put away. He can also summon it directly into his hand 36 798 1118.
• Can return to his hand from a distance, flying free of the ground when he calls it back 799.
• Accepts only Naraku’s touch. He warns Tsunade that anyone else touching it would be burned to ash by karmic fire 241.
• Gains an indestructible trait after absorbing Shusui and Tenken. It later survives Kaguya’s Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack completely intact 75 799.
• Bears its own excess weight so that its 522-kilogram mass feels appropriate to Naraku without actually decreasing 75 76.
• Grants Naraku immunity to harm from snakes and dragons. Orochimaru’s summoned snakes consequently cannot harm him 36 106.

Applied Sword Techniques

• Super Sonic Vibration Lightning Blade: Naraku coats Kurikara in Lightning Release to generate ultrahigh-frequency vibrations, increasing sharpness and penetration. The combination nearly severs Samehada 37 63.
• Sun Breathing / Hinokami Kagura: Used with Kurikara for flame-wreathed slashes, including Hinokami Kagura: Dance 43.
• Conqueror’s Country: Naraku channels haki, chakra, spirit, and will together through a powerful sword attack against Ten-Tails jinchūriki Madara 779.
