Background and History

Origins and Earlier Hosts

Kurama remembers the Sage of Six Paths as the being who gave the tailed beasts life. He personally knew the Sage’s appearance and Rinnegan, and remembers a description of someone who would eventually lead the tailed beasts toward peace 276 355 420.

Before Naruto, Kurama was sealed inside Kushina Uzumaki. Even her powerful sealing techniques could not prevent every rampage, so she sometimes spent extended periods inside a protective barrier 354 511.

During Kushina’s childbirth, Obito Uchiha infiltrated her guarded delivery site, extracted Kurama, and unleashed the Nine-Tails’ Attack. Obito later admitted responsibility for the disaster and the deaths of Kushina and Minato 219 308.

Minato recovered Kurama from Obito and divided his chakra into two halves. He sealed the Yin half inside himself and the Yang half inside Naruto, leaving Naruto’s seal capable of granting access to Kurama’s power in the future 171 275 511.

Resistance to Naruto

Kurama initially treated Naruto’s training as an opportunity to escape. He willingly supplied chakra because repeated exposure increased the likelihood that his hatred would overwhelm Naruto. During one session, he encouraged Naruto’s anger and pushed his transformation toward a fourth tail 276.

Naraku entered the sealing space and forced Kurama to stop interfering. Kurama sensed other tailed beasts’ chakra in him and, more disturbingly, an impression reminiscent of the Sage of Six Paths. His fear of Naraku temporarily made Naruto’s training easier 276 278.

After Naraku suggested befriending tailed beasts rather than merely controlling them, Jiraiya encouraged Naruto to communicate with Kurama. Kurama mostly responded with mockery or demands that Naruto remove the seal. Nevertheless, Naruto gradually recognized his emotions and learned that he had a personal name, although Kurama refused to disclose it 277 278.

Kurama later exploited Naruto’s distress over learning that Kushina had also been a jinchūriki. He urged Naruto to surrender his body, but abandoned the attempt as soon as Naraku appeared inside the seal 354 355.

Akatsuki’s Extraction Attempts

During Nagato’s attack on Konoha, the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path caught Kurama with chakra chains and began pulling him from Naruto. Kurama and Naruto resisted together. Minato’s stored chakra reinforced the weakening seal, while Naraku’s intervention created an opportunity to escape the statue’s pull 416 417.

Afterward, Kurama withdrew his chakra rather than attempt another breakout. He had sensed the other eight tailed beasts inside the statue and judged Naruto’s seal safer than the outside world. Soon afterward, he gave Naruto an unusually calm warning to be careful 418 420.

Unable to seize Naruto easily, the Akatsuki pursued substitute sources of Nine-Tails chakra. These included the implanted chakra carried by the monk Void, also called Sora, and the chakra retained by Kinkaku and Ginkaku. Obito subsequently extracted the Yin half from the reincarnated Minato, giving the statue enough Nine-Tails chakra to support the Ten-Tails’ revival without first capturing Naruto 460 488 522 535 548.

Reconciliation

On Turtle Island, Kurama remained hostile to Naruto’s attempts at mutual understanding. When Naruto hesitated during their internal battle, Kurama prepared a Tailed Beast Bomb. Kushina’s stored chakra manifested and restrained him with Adamantine Sealing Chains 543 544.

Minato later joined Naruto’s training. Having already reconciled with the Yin half, he helped ease the conflict between Naruto and the Yang half. Naruto acquired Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, but genuine mutual acceptance remained incomplete 588.

Their reconciliation became complete on the morning of the Shinobi World War. Kurama saved Naruto from a Tailed Beast Bomb and acknowledged the selflessness that had placed him in danger. Naruto’s promise not to let the enemy take Kurama further moved him; the two then bumped fists and agreed to fight together 718 719.

War and Later Battles

With their partnership established, Naruto and Kurama deflected six Tailed Beast Bombs and defeated six controlled tailed beasts. Naruto removed their black control rods, prompting Kakashi to marvel that even half of Kurama could overpower them with Naruto’s help 720 724.

Kurama reacted far more anxiously to the revived Ten-Tails. Believing the assembled shinobi could not defeat it, he urged Naruto to seek Naraku and temporarily took over Naruto’s body—with permission—to warn nearby allies. He also reminded Naruto of their plan to rescue the tailed beasts from Obito 737 760.

Madara later subdued the tailed beasts with Limbo: Border Jail, sealed them inside the Demonic Statue, and began extracting Naruto’s remaining Nine-Tails chakra 775. During the subsequent conflict with Kaguya, Kurama advised Naruto to prioritize survival because losing either Naruto or Sasuke would make sealing her impossible 811.

After Kaguya’s defeat, Kurama immediately moved against Sasuke’s declared plans, only to be caught with the other tailed beasts in genjutsu and Planetary Devastation. During Naruto and Sasuke’s duel, half of Kurama’s chakra remained inside Naruto; Kurama helped gather natural energy for their strongest counterattack 830 833 836.

In the postwar era, Kurama was no longer compelled to remain a jinchūriki’s captive. He chose to stay inside Naruto 940. He later fought Toneri’s regenerating Hamura statue on the moon and helped Naruto survive encounters with Momoshiki and Kinshiki 1023 1115 1116.

Appearance

Kurama is an enormous fox whose body dwarfs Naruto inside the sealing space. His cooperative tailed-beast manifestation is golden 544 729.

Personality

Kurama is proud, abrasive, and deeply resentful of imprisonment. He initially refuses to acknowledge Naruto because Konoha has confined him inside jinchūriki for years. His hostility is calculated as well as emotional: he supplies chakra, tempts Naruto to surrender control, and watches for weaknesses in the seal 276 544.

His arrogance does not prevent practical caution. He retreats when confronted by Naraku, prefers confinement to capture by the Demonic Statue, and openly fears the Ten-Tails. He recognizes threats that Naruto’s optimism sometimes leads him to underestimate 355 418 737.

After reconciliation, Kurama retains his sarcasm but becomes protective and dependable. He calls Naruto foolish for risking himself to save others, yet identifies that same selflessness as the reason he accepted him. His concern usually takes the form of blunt warnings rather than open affection 718 811 1115.
