Background / History

Previous life and twenty-year withdrawal

Xuan Zhe’s parents died early in his previous life, leaving his maternal grandfather to raise him. His grandfather also died before his transmigration, so he felt little attachment to the world he left behind. His chief frustration was arriving during the beginning of Hiruzen Sarutobi’s rule rather than under Hashirama or Tobirama 4.

He graduated early with Tsunade, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya, but was not selected alongside them as Hiruzen’s student. From that point, he withdrew to Konoha’s outskirts, refused promotion examinations, and largely avoided missions. Sakumo purchased his land, where he supported himself through farming and hunting 4 10.

After awakening his system, he devoted most of his energy to sword training. During those twenty years, his regular contacts were largely limited to Sakumo, Kakashi, Tsunade, and Nawaki 6.

Return to war and the Sarutobi conflict

Xuan Zhe returned to active involvement because Sakumo’s troubles made him fear that his brother was heading toward death. He also sought revenge against Sarutobi Shinnosuke, whom he regarded as having betrayed the brother who had saved his life 10.

Before departing Konoha, he publicly pushed Shinnosuke and Hiruzen to endorse prioritizing missions over comrades. On the battlefield, he deliberately drew Bunpuku’s attacks toward the Sarutobi Clan. He later told Shinnosuke that he intended to kill him and attribute his death to the Second Kazekage 8 16.

After defeating the Second Kazekage, Xuan Zhe returned with the report that the Kazekage had killed Shinnosuke and that he had avenged him. When Asuma accused him of failing to save his brother, Xuan Zhe turned Shinnosuke’s earlier mission-first position against the accusation 22.

Wider war and political maneuvering

Xuan Zhe and Sakumo confronted A and Killer B as Kumogakure advanced toward the Land of Fire. During their clash, Xuan Zhe awakened Yamamoto’s sword intent and pierced A’s abdomen, with the heat evaporating the blood before it could flow 43 52.

Against Kirigakure, he targeted the Third Mizukage as the quickest way to end the war. The Mizukage trapped him in Izanami, but Xuan Zhe used the confrontation to awaken Ryūjin Jakka. After the Third Mizukage and Seven Ninja Swordsmen had been wiped out, he left compensation negotiations to Shikaku and traveled west with Rin and Mei 65 67 71 72.

His struggle with Konoha’s leadership continued behind the front lines. Shikaku secretly reported Hiruzen and Danzo’s discussions to him, while Orochimaru informed him of Danzo’s plans involving Shisui’s Sharingan and Kushina’s Nine-Tails. Tsunade subsequently became Fourth Hokage 72 81.

Nine-Tails crisis and later opponents

Before Kushina’s childbirth, Xuan Zhe entered her mindscape and suppressed the emerging Nine-Tails chakra. He arranged for Tsunade and Sakumo to guard her while agreeing to observe Orochimaru’s planned attack on the Sarutobi and Shimura families 97.

When the controlled Nine-Tails attacked Konoha, his flames drove it away from the central district. He then dispersed its charging Tailed Beast Bomb with Ryūjin Jakka Taimatsu 103.

He later wounded Deva Path Pain and marked Konan’s soul before withdrawing, while the Zetsu escaped with Nagato. In another confrontation, he overwhelmed Ōtsutsuki Masato and pinned Toneri beneath his foot. Before he could kill Toneri, he and Hinata were transported to a watery space and addressed by an ancient Ninshu guardian identified as “[Pre-Hamura]” 111 128.

Xuan Zhe also arranged a joint Konoha–Kirigakure ambush against Kumogakure. He announced his intention to kill its leadership and install Sakumo as Fourth Raikage, then ordered the allied forces to leave no enemy shinobi alive 135.

Sasuke’s training

After recognizing that Sasuke was considering leaving Konoha for power, Xuan Zhe intervened rather than allow him to follow that course. His training combined swordsmanship with farming, fishing, and precise chakra-control exercises 158 160.

He forged Sasuke’s Heavenly Cloth Flow Sword, taught him to coat it in Lightning Release, and sparred against him using a chakra-hardened wooden blade. Growing spectator crowds prompted him to charge admission and organize paid student matches, giving Sasuke practical experience while earning money 162.

Later identities and conflicts

Later accounts introduce additional aspects of Xuan Zhe’s background. A transforming cat recognized his bloodline and identified him as a lord of the Black Cat Country. Recovered memories described him as the Imperial Preceptor’s son and the cat as his personal bodyguard 218 219.

His relationship with Hidden Mystery Village varied across subsequent events. Earlier battles left him badly injured and motivated intensive training; he later defeated a force of more than five hundred of its shinobi. Other accounts show him addressing its clan head as “Master,” representing the Hidden Mystery Organization, and defending the village from an outsider 227 236 237 241 244.

Against Ninshu, he withdrew with his surviving subordinates rather than abandon them. He later reported that a mysterious woman named Qingye had saved him and taught him during his escape 242.

His later battle with Jiraiya left him severely wounded despite his mist techniques, although he subsequently vanished from Jiraiya’s sight. In his latest documented appearance, he expressed guilt over Yotsuki’s poisoning, connecting it to his own agreement with Situ Aotian and resolving to make amends 246 247 254.

Appearance

• Face: Sharply defined and considered notably handsome by Kurenai 8.
• Hair: Long, flowing white hair, explicitly contrasted with Sakumo and Kakashi’s spiky white hair 8.

Personality

Xuan Zhe is abrasive, irreverent, and deliberately provocative. He harshly rebukes Sakumo for tolerating humiliation and repeatedly unsettles opponents through insults, dismissive replies, and calculated indifference 1 180 212.

His loyalty is selective but intense. Protecting Sakumo draws him out of seclusion, and he refuses to ignore danger involving the women close to him. He also intervenes when Sasuke appears likely to go astray and takes his surviving subordinates with him when retreating from Ninshu 10 151 158 242.

That protectiveness coexists with ruthlessness. He engineers attacks against the Sarutobi Clan, plans to conceal Shinnosuke’s death, kills defeated pursuers, and orders the destruction of an enemy force 16 135 182. His treatment of Tsunade in a later account becomes explicitly possessive, including threats if she conceals information from him 230.

Despite his relaxed domestic habits and interest in profit, he remains committed to training. He practices even during supposed rest periods, uses weights while sparring, and regards death as the only reason to stop improving 162 168.
