Background / History

Childhood and the Senju disaster

Tsunade attended the Ninja Academy with Xuanzhe, Orochimaru, and Jiraiya. She and Xuanzhe were already close as children. Hiruzen’s decision to take her as a student was partly intended to reassure the Senju Clan while securing his position as Third Hokage 4.

During the Second Shinobi World War, an Intelligence Department failure led the Senju main force into an enemy ambush. More than ninety percent of its shinobi died, including Tsunade and Nawaki’s parents. The surviving clan depended heavily on Tsunade’s Kage-level strength to preserve its standing 9 24.

Nawaki survived because Xuanzhe’s remark that he was unsuited to being a ninja kept him from going to war. Tsunade, fiercely protective of her brother, became angry enough over the remark to break up with Xuanzhe 6.

Second Shinobi World War

After the Senju catastrophe, Tsunade refused direct combat and restricted herself to treating patients behind the lines. She continued serving because she could not watch wounded people die, rather than out of confidence in Konoha’s leadership. On the Sunagakure front, she repeatedly countered Chiyo’s poisons 9.

Xuanzhe’s arrival at Orochimaru’s command tent rekindled their relationship. Their reunion produced the first smile the assembled officers had seen from Tsunade since the Senju disaster 10.

When the surviving forces returned to Konoha, Tsunade received the loudest welcome. The narration attributes this popularity to her having personally treated nine out of every ten Konoha ninja who served on the battlefield 21.

Remaining in Konoha and the Third Shinobi World War

With Nawaki alive and Xuanzhe still nearby, Tsunade remained in Konoha after the war. She taught medical ninjutsu to Rin Nohara and began practicing armament haki under Xuanzhe. She later became a jōnin instructor for Rin, Kurenai Yuhi, and a third girl 30 36.

Initially unwilling to return to the battlefield, she was persuaded by Xuanzhe that fresh military achievements would help secure her appointment as Fourth Hokage. On the western front, she treated Minato’s injuries and later demonstrated her enhanced strength by destroying Dodai’s defensive wall 41 42 50 77.

Fourth Hokage

Tsunade officially became Fourth Hokage on August 2, Konoha Year 45. Her candidacy rested on her strength, medical reputation, wartime achievements, and descent from the First Hokage, with Xuanzhe providing decisive support 43 79 81 82.

She immediately ordered Hiruzen’s possessions removed from the Hokage’s office and sent to the Sarutobi compound, singling out smoking-related items for removal. Most shinobi clans quickly declared their support for her administration 80 82.

Her medical duties continued while in office. She helped Xuanzhe suppress Shisui’s Wood Release rampage, assisted with Naruto’s birth, and sustained Kushina with medical chakra after the Nine-Tails was extracted. During the abduction, Minato rescued Tsunade from the Masked Man’s Kamui 86 100 101 102.

After the attack, she assigned Shisui—Anbu codename Crow—to rebuild the damaged village with Wood Release. The appointment faced opposition from clan leaders who suspected his involvement in twenty-six Wood Release deaths 105.

Marriage and retirement

Tsunade repeatedly wanted to resign because she hated the office’s paperwork. After discussing the political consequences with Xuanzhe, she initially stayed on to avoid destabilizing relations with the Uchiha over the choice of a Fifth Hokage 96 107 108.

When Mei Terumi proposed marrying Xuanzhe to reinforce the Konoha–Kirigakure alliance, Tsunade objected. Nawaki proposed that Tsunade marry him first as his principal wife, with Mei joining later as his secondary wife. Tsunade tacitly accepted, and her wedding took place six months before Mei’s wedding on May 21, Konoha Year 55 122 123.

Tsunade eventually agreed to step down in favor of Minato. Before the handover, Shisui and Itachi reported Fugaku’s planned uprising. She ordered the two hundred participating rebels killed during the inauguration while explicitly sparing uninvolved Uchiha. Following the incident, she ordered compensation for Uchiha victims, continued the search for Obito, and postponed the inauguration 124 127 134.

Retirement and the Sound Ninja

After retirement, Tsunade returned to gambling, travel, hospital work, and teaching. She accepted paid lessons with Sasuke, then took Sakura as an apprentice after testing her strength and ability to break genjutsu 159 166 167 170.

An encounter with suspicious Sound Ninja led her to investigate their disappearance with Xuanzhe and Sasuke. The group discovered evidence that the ninja had escaped underground using Earth Release 164.

During the later attack on the Small Wooden House, Tsunade fought Jirobo, Tayuya, Sakon, and Ukon while protecting the younger ninja. When Tayuya’s chakra-draining spirits frustrated her physical attacks, she switched to a large-scale genjutsu and turned the attackers against one another. After the battle damaged the house, she and Xuanzhe moved the group to his mansion in the Senju compound 175 176.

Later appearances

Later passages describe Tsunade as a village chief’s granddaughter who has been abducted, prompting Xuanzhe to search for her. She subsequently tells him that she has captured a Konoha shinobi she considers her boyfriend, alarming Xuanzhe because he identifies the man as a dangerous enemy 220 230.

She notices Xuanzhe’s changed behavior and refuses to explain how she captured the shinobi. In subsequent encounters, she expresses confidence in Xuanzhe’s potential to reach Saint rank and privately resolves to learn from his surprise-attack tactics 231 235 236.

Appearance

• Hair and eyes: Blonde hair and green eyes 9.
• Youthful appearance: Looks to be in her early twenties when nearly thirty; at her wedding, she is over forty but appears approximately twenty-five or twenty-six 9 123.

Personality

Tsunade is blunt, quick-tempered, and expressive. Xuanzhe considers her emotions easy to read, and her embarrassment or anger frequently results in a punch. She particularly dislikes reminders of her age and repeatedly hits Naruto for calling her “Granny Tsunade” 10 23 30 164.

Her resentment toward Konoha’s former leadership coexists with a strong attachment to the village. After losing her parents and most of her clan, she continues treating its wounded out of medical duty. As Hokage, she can set aside private jealousy and act decisively on reconstruction and security 9 30 105 127.

Gambling is her most persistent vice. She enjoys the excitement rather than money itself and becomes more determined to continue after losing. Although she initially refuses to misuse reconstruction funds, later losses consume both her savings and Xuanzhe’s money, followed by the fee Sasuke pays for training 78 155 159.

She dislikes administrative routine but can invest considerable effort in students who interest her. Her curiosity about Sakura and Sasuke’s relationship initially helps Sakura win an apprenticeship; recognizing Sakura’s genuine talent later persuades her to stay home and teach instead of visiting a gambling den 167 173.

Medical Ninjutsu

Recognized as the greatest medical ninja of her age, Tsunade’s healing ability gives her influence even among political rivals 9 41 79.
