History
Childhood and presumed death
Obito was remembered in Konoha as an exceptionally kind child. He helped elderly women cross the street and protected the weak; both Hiruzen and Kakashi later compare Yan’s apparent kindness to his. His Sharingan awakened with two tomoe after a teammate was injured 5 7 16 21 33.
Madara rescued Obito on the battlefield, and Obito survived the death reported to Konoha. Madara’s subsequent manipulation of his loved ones became a source of intense resentment. Obito eventually condemns Madara for making others suffer losses to reproduce the circumstances of his own awakening 137 188 244.
Obito was responsible for the Nine-Tails’ attack and Minato’s death, despite remaining publicly remembered as a fallen Konoha hero. His survival and responsibility are concealed from Kakashi for much of the story 83 244.
Meeting Uchiha Yan
Obito initially dismisses Yan as worthless for reaching twelve without awakening his Sharingan. When Zetsu suggests that Yan might discover their plan, Obito proposes killing him. He briefly softens after learning that Yan intends to record his heroic deeds in the Uchiha genealogy 21.
The threat becomes immediate when Zetsu reports that Yan has an idea who killed Minato. Obito attacks, but Yan identifies him and pretends to believe that he is undertaking a secret mission for the Fourth Hokage. Rather than confront him openly, Yan appeals to his suffering and treats his hidden identity as that of an unrecognized hero 33 34.
Yan’s resemblance to Rin, together with his ideas for escaping Madara’s Cursed Seal, persuades Obito to spare him. Obito demands secrecy and decides to watch his progress. He later privately welcomes the possibility of removing the seal and preventing Madara’s resurrection 35 40.
Heroic reputation and hidden cooperation
The Uchiha place Obito’s photograph in their Shrine and record his deeds in their family tree. Black Zetsu accuses him of sparing the clan because he values this recognition; Obito angrily denies it. The clan also prepares a lantern-floating festival and incense offerings for his death anniversary 54 62.
When Obito believes Yan has died, he grieves over the loss of someone as kind as Rin and blames Zetsu for failing to notify him in time. Yan’s final message recommends Orochimaru, Kakuzu, and Chiyo as possible solutions to his concealed problem 83.
Obito subsequently pursues cooperation with Orochimaru. By the time Madara is reincarnated, the Cursed Seal is gone, although the supplied passages do not show its removal 114 130 189.
Searching for the missing tailed beasts
Obito eventually abandons the pretense that Yan does not know his identity. He demands a way to recover the Three-Tails and Eight-Tails, insisting that the path to permanent peace requires them. Yan’s proposal of lasting peace through other means does not satisfy him 167.
He supports Kabuto’s research with White Zetsu operatives, experimental resources, and books written by Yan. His immediate objective is to restore access to the missing tailed beasts, including through research into Boruto’s Jōgan 169.
Boruto’s arrival excites him enough to offer every forbidden jutsu in the Uchiha Clan in exchange for rescuing the Eight-Tails. Although Boruto cannot yet control his eye, Obito agrees to wait and offers to help confront his pursuer 181.
Alliance with Urashiki and Madara
Obito makes contact with Urashiki and accepts increasingly opportunistic alliances. He considers allowing Nagato to become the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki, then seizing the Rinnegan and Ten-Tails after others defeat him. He also considers killing Urashiki for his eyes 186 187.
Despite previously wanting Madara to remain dead, Obito has him reincarnated to advance the plan. He openly tells Madara that Yan’s program for peace is more practical, but still prefers the permanence promised by genjutsu 189.
Obito joins Urashiki, Madara, and Nagato in traveling to another world. There he demonstrates techniques derived from Yan’s books, fights Naruto’s allies, and participates in the confrontation with Jigen. The group is forced to retreat after discovering the danger of Jigen’s shrinking ability 194 195 198 200 204.
Renewed conspiracy against Konoha
Back in his own world, Obito proposes joining the other great nations to destroy Konoha. He also seeks an opportunity to possess Yan, regarding Divine Erosion as an ideal complement to Kamui. Unable to find an opening, he withdraws for secluded training 250 254.
He later shelters Kabuto and Hiruko in the Kamui Dimension. Kabuto suggests exploiting the ideological differences between Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata to create conflict among their supporters. Obito accepts the plan, rules out Hinata as too difficult to deceive, and orders White Zetsu to investigate Naruto and Sasuke 256.
His interference includes impersonating Asuma with White Zetsu assistance and exploiting an incident involving Iwagakure spies. He openly taunts Yan that punishing Naruto and Tobirama could alienate Minato, Tsunade, and other Konoha figures 263 268 270.
Obito also tries to recruit Minato and Kakashi by presenting cooperation as the only way to protect Naruto. Kakashi rejects the appeal and offers instead to seek Rin’s resurrection through Kaguya and Nagato 271.
Pure Land operation
After locating the Ryūmyaku, Obito coordinates a larger operation with Kabuto, Hiruko, and Urashiki. He plans to distract Minato with war, gather souls in the Pure Land, and then move against Ryūchi Cave and Mount Myōboku 279.
In the Pure Land, he helps restrain the Sage of Six Paths while Kabuto absorbs souls. He wins Indra’s support by invoking Uchiha ancestry, loyalty to Kaguya, and the crime of sealing one’s own mother. Indra’s explanation of spiritual energy also teaches him that Kamui remains usable without his body 279 280.
Reflection trap and seizure of Nagato’s eyes
Obito attempts to lure Yan away while his allies pursue their own objectives. Yan recognizes the diversion and prepares an ambush with Kakashi, Minato, Itachi, and Taichi 283 284 285.
Obito anticipates the counterattack. He deliberately retains Minato’s technique formula and uses the expected response to his duplicate technique as part of a second trap. When Kakashi opens the Kamui Dimension and the allied attacks enter it, Obito activates Reflection, leaving the attackers near death 286.
He takes Nagato’s Rinnegan, reclaims Kakashi’s Sharingan, and begins extracting the Ten-Tails’ power. He refuses to kill the defeated group, reasoning that Kaguya could revive them anyway 286.
Battle against Yan’s coalition
Obito later deploys the God Tree and massed Tailed Beast Bombs while Kabuto prevents Yan from responding with dōjutsu. During their continued battle, he keeps his distance to deny Yan the physical contact needed for his ability 293 294.
Once Reflection has recovered, Obito uses it again against Yan’s enormous palm strike. Yan collapses, but Boruto and Sarada arrive, and Sarada’s black holes absorb the follow-up ninjutsu. Obito immediately switches to a close-range sword attack and orders his allies to exploit the opening 300 301.
The arrival of Konan and a reincarnated Nagato interrupts this assault. Obito is surprised that Nagato deliberately died and returned through Impure World Reincarnation to regain access to the Rinnegan 301.
Appearance
- Spiral mask: Conceals his identity while operating as a presumed-dead Uchiha 83.
- Visible right eye: Reveals a Mangekyō Sharingan when he removes his mask before Yan 167.
- Later eye replacement: Exchanges his right Sharingan for one of Nagato’s Rinnegan and retrieves his other eye from Kakashi 286.
Personality
Obito’s remembered kindness contrasts sharply with his later ruthlessness. The child who protected the weak becomes willing to kill Yan merely for posing a possible risk to the plan. Even so, perceived kindness can still sway him: he spares Yan partly because Yan reminds him of Rin 21 34 35.
He is proud of his talent and repeatedly cites awakening two tomoe as proof of genius. His heroic reputation also matters more than he admits; praise in the Uchiha genealogy visibly embarrasses him, and Black Zetsu uses it to challenge his claim of indifference 21 54 281.
His pursuit of peace is absolute rather than practical. He acknowledges that Yan has a credible program for lasting peace, yet insists on permanent peace through Infinite Tsukuyomi. Even when told that it is a means of resurrecting Kaguya, he calls it his only reason for living and accepts even a one-in-ten-thousand chance of success 189 270.
Over time, Obito becomes a more patient manipulator. He exploits political grievances, former friendships, ideological disputes, and his opponents’ knowledge of his abilities. He is also willing to cry and guilt-trip Yan if doing so advances his objectives 202 256 270 271 286.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Mangekyō Sharingan
Obito’s ocular abilities underpin both his combat style and his concealed identity 14 167.
- Awakened directly with two tomoe 14.
- Possesses a Mangekyō Sharingan in his right eye before replacing it with a Rinnegan 167 286.
- Recognizes Kotoamatsukami as capable of changing his will unnoticed and rejects recruiting Shisui because of that risk 130.
- Understands that Mangekyō abilities have limits on duration and frequency of use, which he invokes when challenging Sarada’s black holes 301.
Kamui
Kamui provides intangibility, spatial transport, and access to a private dimension 34 135 169.
- Turns intangible to avoid attacks; sustained ninjutsu forces him to interrupt an attempt to transport Orochimaru 135.
- Stores books, equipment, and a spare Rinnegan in the Kamui Dimension 169 286.
- Uses the dimension as a concealed base for Kabuto and Hiruko 256.
- Can access it while existing as a soul after learning the relationship between dōjutsu and spiritual energy 280.
- Kakashi’s corresponding Kamui can open his dimension, creating an avenue for attacks against him 168 286.
Cultivation-Derived Techniques
Obito turns concepts from Yan’s books into functional combat techniques 130 195 200.
- Buddha’s Fury Fire Lotus: Produces a blue flaming lotus in his right hand and throws it into the air 198.
- Great Wilderness Imprisoning Heaven Palm: Manifests an enormous flaming palm threaded with purple lightning, scarlet bloodlight, and spatial distortion. Madara recognizes that its power is not merely chakra 200.
- One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones: Produces two identical counterparts; Obito later builds a trap around Yan anticipating this technique 283 286.
Soul Possession Technique
Obito creates this technique by combining Spirit Transformation with Living Corpse Reincarnation 204.
- Allows his soul to leave his body, offering a way to remain active after Infinite Tsukuyomi 186 281.
- Enables participation in the Pure Land operation as a soul 279 280.
- Carries a severe risk: dispersal of his soul would kill him beyond recovery, including through Rinne Rebirth 280.
Shinjutsu: Reflection
Reflection is a shinjutsu Obito obtains from the Boruto World and conceals until his opponents commit to an attack 286.
- Envelops him in a pale purple glow 286 300.
- Turns a coordinated barrage against its attackers, leaving Yan and his allies near death 286.
- Also counters dōjutsu-based attacks, contrary to the narrower limitation Yan believed it had 300.
- Requires a cooldown; its duration is not specified in the supplied passages 300.
Rinnegan and Ten-Tails Power
Obito acquires Nagato’s Rinnegan and begins extracting his power after the Reflection ambush 286.
- Implants one Rinnegan and stores the other 286.
- Extends silver chains into Nagato’s abdomen during extraction 286.
- Manifests a God Tree and prepares numerous Tailed Beast Bombs around its trunk 293.
Intelligence and Infiltration
Obito combines White Zetsu surveillance with disguises and carefully timed interventions 169 263 268.
- Uses White Zetsu to gather intelligence, obtain research subjects, and monitor targets 169 256.
- Impersonates Asuma with a White Zetsu covering his body 263.
- Exploits Konoha’s internal disputes rather than relying solely on direct attacks 268 270.
- Leaves Minato’s technique formula intact to make a predicted ambush possible 286.
