Background / History
Attack at Jinghai Town
Orochimaru’s involvement is first suspected when a snake is discovered following a spy. Yan concludes that Danzo has likely struck a deal with him, although this remains Yan’s deduction at that point 66.
He later ambushes the exhausted Yan and Hyūga Shinkō with a giant python. When Jiraiya intervenes, Orochimaru openly declares that he wants both Yan and the Byakugan. Kakashi cuts the prisoners free, but Orochimaru surrounds them with explosive snakes while using Manda and additional pythons to obstruct their rescuers. The attack kills Yan, Shinkō, and Hizashi Hyuga; Jiraiya allows Orochimaru to escape 81 82.
Yan’s Pursuit and the Immortality Bargain
After Yan returns, he persuades Konoha’s leadership to authorize Orochimaru’s capture and the recovery of his forbidden techniques. Yan identifies Impure World Reincarnation as a particular danger, warning that Orochimaru might eventually resurrect Hashirama Senju 95 105.
Yan’s team locates Orochimaru by tracking Danzo’s Root operatives. Following a coordinated attack by Yan, Kakashi, and Taichi, Orochimaru agrees to discuss cooperation. Yan asks him to investigate the masked man claiming to be Madara and introduces theories of immortality based on balancing physical and spiritual yin and yang 106 107 108.
Taichi’s altered Byakugan gives Orochimaru a new research direction: evolving the Byakugan and investigating natural energy. Yan deliberately encourages this interest, hoping Orochimaru’s experiments will produce the Tenseigan or Jōgan 108 109.
Byakugan Research and Honoka
Orochimaru bargains with Obito, offering a replacement heart in exchange for the Byakugan and the Kaguya Clan’s most gifted ninja. Their agreement involves infiltrating Kirigakure and provoking conflict with Konoha; both intend to betray the other after obtaining what they need 114 115.
While searching the Land of Sea, Orochimaru discovers Summoning Island and rescues Honoka Uzumaki. He accepts her as his student and promises to teach her sealing techniques. Privately, he considers combining Uzumaki blood with the Byakugan to develop the Jōgan, or making Honoka a jinchūriki for tailed-beast research 124 125.
His subsequent infiltration of Konoha to find Taichi ends disastrously. Itachi detects the resentment surrounding him, and the village’s shinobi converge on his position. Orochimaru survives Inabi’s Susanoo, but Itachi’s soul attack nearly kills him. He escapes to Ryūchi Cave through reverse summoning and begins considering resentment itself as a usable form of spiritual energy 127 128.
Imprisonment in the Uchiha Sealing Grounds
During the battle involving Konoha and Kirigakure, Orochimaru swallows Yagura with a giant python and steals Ao’s Byakugan. Yan’s allies intercept him, and Inabi’s Yellow Springs Binding sends him into the Uchiha Clan Sealing Grounds 134 135.
Inside, Orochimaru encounters an ancient prisoner later identified as Uchiha Hikari. She tells him that Boruto’s Jōgan could provide an escape. Unable to leave independently, he places his hopes in Kabuto’s experiments with the Uzumaki bloodline and Byakugan 139 166.
Madara eventually releases Orochimaru in exchange for the Eight-Tails. Yan later cites this rescue as proof that merely sealing Orochimaru away is insufficient 221 237.
The Demonic Path and Tenseigan Experiments
Orochimaru rejects conventional Taoist cultivation as too slow and pursues a different route to immortality involving the Box of Ultimate Bliss. Working with Hiruko and Kabuto, he proposes a Human Emperor Banner that combines soul consumption, Impure World Reincarnation, and the Reaper Death Seal. Black Zetsu supplies information suggesting that a Tenseigan could provide the Yin-Yang Release needed to destroy the box’s undying monster 220 221.
His group attacks Toneri on the moon. Although Toneri’s Tenseigan overwhelms them, Orochimaru and Tobirama create an opening for a snake to bite Toneri and obtain his blood 223.
Orochimaru next attempts to seize Hinata’s Byakugan, only to trigger a dōjutsu trap planted by Yan. Hinata destroys his body with eight Rasengan and burns the remains, but he survives through Living Corpse Reincarnation. He subsequently uses the reanimated Minato to abduct Dodai and retreats to Ryūchi Cave before Yan arrives 228 236 237.
Lunar Battle and Soul Remnant
When Yan’s coalition finally confronts him, Orochimaru possesses the Tenseigan and can combine its chakra mode with Sage Mode. His Silver Wheel Reincarnation Explosion devastates the valley, but the White Snake Sage interrupts the battle and effortlessly suppresses him along with the other combatants 250 251.
Orochimaru then travels to the moon to seize the Giant Tenseigan’s chakra. Yan, Nagato, and Toneri oppose him, forcing him to employ his modified Reaper Death Seal. Yan ultimately kills him and continues pursuing his soul into the Shinigami’s Stomach 252 254.
Kabuto initially believes Orochimaru is permanently dead because Kimimaro and Honoka have also been killed and Orochimaru had withdrawn his other cursed seals. Nevertheless, Kabuto later summons a surviving soul remnant. Orochimaru passes on instructions concerning resurrection, the Tenseigan, and the Human Emperor Banner before dissipating 256 274.
Counterpart in the Other Shinobi World
- The other world’s Orochimaru supplies Madara’s group with Shukaku’s chakra and states that his body is connected to the God Tree 201.
- He expresses interest in researching the Ten-Tails and warns that its revival may produce an unexpected surprise 201.
- He witnesses Yan depart with the time-traveling turtle, then investigates Nagato’s transformation into the Ten-Tails’ jinchūriki 208.
Appearance
- Long tongue: Extends it to lick his cheek when intrigued by Yan’s immortality theories 108.
- Alterable body: Can stretch his body, emerge from a burned shell, and conceal himself inside snakes 81 107.
- Disguises: Enters Konoha after changing his appearance, posing as a traveling merchant 127.
- Blue eyes: Displayed during his Tenseigan-era confrontation with Toneri; a pair of blue eyes remains after his soul remnant dissipates 252 274.
- Green chakra mantle: Envelops his body when combining Tenseigan Chakra Mode with Sage Mode 251.
Personality
Orochimaru places immortality and discovery above emotional attachments. He dismisses people “bound by emotion” as unworthy of immortality and becomes visibly greedy when presented with new possibilities for extending his life or evolving the Byakugan 108 109.
His caution makes him difficult to eliminate. He uses underground escape routes, snake decoys, replacement bodies, reverse summoning, and surviving fragments of himself rather than trusting a single means of survival. That caution does not prevent overconfidence: after acquiring the Tenseigan, he insults the White Snake Sage and is immediately overpowered 107 128 134 237 251.
He can present a reassuring, compassionate manner when recruiting someone useful. His encouragement of Honoka accompanies private plans to use her bloodline and body in experiments. His final request that Kabuto look after Guren, however, identifies her as the person he worries about most 125 274.
