Background
Yan arrives in the Shinobi World with knowledge of Naruto and memories of life on Blue Star. His previous interests include meditation, the Daozang, and the Yangming School of Mind. He initially regards the people around him as fictional characters rather than people to whom he has emotional ties 2 8 10.
He is treated as an Uchiha orphan and has recently graduated from the Ninja Academy. After his home is destroyed, he stays at Fugaku’s house because replacement accommodation has not been arranged 2 9 22 119.
His earliest survival strategy is political rather than martial: he ties his fate to Itachi’s to force Fugaku to intervene against Danzo. He subsequently uses his knowledge of Minato, the Nine-Tails attack, and Uchiha history to make himself difficult for Konoha’s leadership to discard 2 3 4.
Personality
Yan is talkative, theatrical, and highly conscious of how others perceive him. His deliberately humble manner can turn instantly into extravagant Uchiha boasting when that better serves a mission. He openly explains that exceeding low expectations is a way to build a reputation quickly 14 32 62 63.
His “kindhearted” image combines genuine restraints with calculated performance. Early praise of Uchiha humility is intended to protect the clan and deprive it of a justification for rebellion. When he finally confronts Hiruzen, he admits that he has been acting for the leadership, while insisting that his respect for those who died protecting Konoha was never false 5 118.
Initially, meditation and emotional detachment make negative feelings difficult for him to sustain—an obstacle to Sharingan advancement. His distance also produces an unrecognized sense of superiority over the people he considers fictional. As he becomes more invested in the Uchiha, the Sharingan begins influencing his thinking 8 10 48 63.
Yan reacts especially badly to reckless allies who ignore a plan. His anger at the casualties caused by the Uchiha–Root clash is strong enough to awaken his Sharingan. Despite this temper, he generally avoids killing ordinary villagers unless left with no alternative 27 28 120.
His later rule is markedly harsher than his early language of reform through personal example. He orders retaliation against daimyō bloodlines and refuses to reverse Naruto’s potentially fatal punishment, arguing that compassion cannot excuse conduct that endangers others 48 157 271.
Abilities & Skills
Tianyan System
The Tianyan System deduces methods and growth paths suited to its user 6.
- Scans terrain and surroundings within a two-kilometer radius 6.
- Accepts written objectives; Yan uses it to investigate instant-cast ninjutsu, Mangekyō awakening, and the Uchiha family tree 15.
- Requires deduction resources, prompting Yan to conserve its use and supply it with information 14 63.
- Helps him compare Confucian and Taoist cultivation methods 140.
- Is not infallible: it cannot provide him with a workable procedure for restoring his inherited father’s exhausted Mangekyō eyes 170.
Sharingan and Genjutsu
Yan develops from an unawakened Uchiha into an Eternal Mangekyō user, while studying ways to reduce the Sharingan’s psychological and physical drawbacks 8 10 140 230.
- Incapacitates Kakashi with close-range genjutsu 120.
- Uses genjutsu to transmit the Uchiha educational heritage to Sarada 197.
- Demonstrates shared illusions to teach bored clansmen recreational activities 147.
- Initially considers Eternal Mangekyō evolution inaccessible because he has no relatives available to rely upon 140.
- Later examines the possibility of restoring an inherited father’s depleted Mangekyō eyes, without a confirmed solution at that point 170.
Divine Erosion
Divine Erosion is a Mangekyō ability capable of incapacitating a jinchūriki and suppressing a tailed beast’s chakra 157.
- Activates against the Two-Tails when its tail touches Yan’s hand, leaving it unable to gather chakra 157.
- Allows him to incapacitate Yugito Nii, although the Eight-Tails prevents his side from securing her 157.
- Makes physical contact a major tactical threat; in a later battle, Yan repeatedly tries to touch Obito while Obito keeps his distance 294.
Susanoo and Dharma Form
Yan possesses a silver-white Susanoo and later demonstrates Dharma Form Heaven and Earth 157 245.
- Uses Susanoo while covering Konoha’s withdrawal from the jinchūriki attack 157.
- Manifests a battlefield-dominating Dharma Form against Nagato 245.
- Kaguya describes the enormous apparition as resembling Susanoo but containing natural energy 247.
- The Dharma Form wields a sword and produces a flaming phoenix during the moon battle 252.
- Its sword-energy barrage drives Obito and Nagato underground 286.
- Can be restrained: Orochimaru’s modified soul technique binds the form and limits Yan during their lunar confrontation 252.
Confucian and Taoist Cultivation
Yan introduces Haoran Qi as a path grounded in learning, self-cultivation, and accumulated righteousness. His earliest explanations of chakra and yin–yang theory include deliberate bluffing, but he later commits to cultivating the methods himself 6 7 140.
- Uses meditation, calligraphy, and book compilation to increase spiritual energy 147.
- Considers Eight-Section Brocade, Eight-Part Vajra Skill, and Changchun Gong as complementary physical practices 147.
- Uses Haoran Qi through a pale-golden sword to oppose Orochimaru’s soul chains 252.
- Finds Haoran Qi less effective against Orochimaru after the latter removes resentment from his soul 252.
- Demonstrates golden protection that blocks Isshiki’s black rods 238.
- Is recognized by Shibai as having learned One Qi Transforms into Three Pure Ones 304.
Ninjutsu and Mobility
- Fire Release: Uses fireballs in combat and develops instant-casting methods through system deductions 15 19 65.
- Body Flicker Technique: Uses rapid movement for travel and close-range attacks 130 157 184.
- Dōjutsu-enhanced speed: Evades Orochimaru’s Truth-Seeking Orbs with an ocular speed boost 250.
- Elemental movement: With Eight Trigrams patterns in his pupils, becomes lightning and later disperses into fierce winds during the moon battle 252.
- Chakra conservation: When facing prolonged combat, favors evasion and explosive-tagged kunai over repeated ninjutsu exchanges 80.
Strategy, Diplomacy, and Education
Yan’s principal early advantages are information, persuasion, and the ability to exploit conflicting interests 28 45 49.
- Uses the political cost of his death to restrain Danzo and, later, the Third Hokage 49 118.
- Negotiates military cooperation, technology exchanges, and a marriage alliance with Kirigakure 173 230 262.
- Uses factories and protected trade routes to increase support for Konoha in the Land of Water 230.
- Establishes a Uchiha preschool and trains its teachers in the Six Arts and basic mathematics 99 104 105.
- Emphasizes fairness, concentration, patience, observation, and practical problem-solving in childhood education 105 147.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Kunai and explosive tags — Early combat staples; an explosive-tagged kunai kills a pursuer underwater 7 38.
- Konoha forehead protector — Reveals it when identifying himself to Kirigakure ninja; later surrenders it during his confrontation with Konoha’s leaders 38 118.
- Ninjutsu scrolls — Receives Dragon Fire Technique from Haruna, Phoenix Flower Jutsu and clan leaders’ notes through Fugaku, and Lightning Clone from Kakashi 9 10 22.
- Two drops of Hashirama’s blood — Keeps them while considering whether their use is worth the risk 140.
- Inherited Mangekyō eyes — His inherited father’s eyes have no remaining eye power when he considers restoring them 170.
- Silver Spear — Used in later battles; can become a pale-golden longsword when he counters soul chains 252 286.
- Flying Thunder God kunai — Carries one while preparing the operation against Orochimaru 249.
- Qin — Plays it while instructing the Uchiha kindergarten’s teachers 104.
Relationships
- Uchiha Itachi — His earliest pupil in Confucian learning and Haoran Qi. Yan deliberately discourages early graduation and battlefield service to divert him from the clan-massacre path. Itachi later becomes clan head while Yan refrains from interfering in clan affairs as Hokage 6 24 96 230.
- Uchiha Fugaku — Clan head, host, and frequent target of Yan’s criticism. Yan uses Fugaku’s responsibility toward Itachi to secure protection, then supplies plans for clan reform 2 22 47.
- Kakashi — Initially a hostile captain who nearly kills him over Minato’s death. Later gives him Lightning Clone, works under his authority, and rejects Obito’s appeal to join an uprising against him 8 22 219 271.
- Hyuga Taichi — Original teammate who saves him from Kakashi’s attack. Later assists in the Orochimaru ambush and eventually opens a passage to another world 8 135 286.
- Hyuga Hizashi — Later captain and protector. Hizashi dies protecting Yan, who seeks to repay him by becoming Neji’s teacher 50 94 95.
- Hyuga Neji — Yan’s first formal disciple. Yan requires three kowtows and the address “Master” to establish their tutelage 140.
- Uchiha Shisui — Student of Yan’s writings and an important genjutsu collaborator. Yan criticizes his political judgment while relying on Kotoamatsukami for plans involving Yagura and Orochimaru 22 50 129 135.
- Uchiha Inabi — Trusted collaborator whose memory-sealing genjutsu assists Yan’s early plans. His Yellow Springs Binding later swallows Orochimaru, ruining Yan’s attempt to obtain immortality research 16 120 135.
- Shimura Danzo — Persistent enemy and political rival. Yan repeatedly turns Danzo’s ambitions against him, although their later dealings sometimes involve temporary cooperation 2 49 94 142.
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — Alternates between supporting Yan, restricting him, and treating him as a threat. Their relationship breaks openly when Yan condemns his leadership and threatens to remove him 4 73 99 118.
- Konan and Nagato — Early diplomatic contacts who offer protection and intelligence support. Nagato later clashes with Yan over territorial expansion before reaching an agreement 20 32 33 245.
- Mei Terumi — Diplomatic partner and eventual marriage agreement partner. Yan proposes engagement as a deterrent against rival villages; Mei later agrees to marry him as part of Kirigakure’s alliance 173 262.
- Orochimaru — Desired source of immortality research, then a dangerous enemy. Their rivalry culminates in major battles involving soul techniques and the moon 135 249 252.
- Sakura Haruno — His student in Yan’s world. He directs her toward Yin Seal training and later incorporates her abilities into battlefield planning 195 219 294.
- Sarada Uchiha — A pupil from a parallel world whom he teaches Haoran Qi and the Six Arts. She later protects him by absorbing enemy attacks with her Mangekyō ability 195 197 301.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Survival and the Uchiha–Root Conflict
- During the aftermath of the Nine-Tails attack, Yan prevents Itachi from identifying himself too early, ensuring that Fugaku must intervene rather than allowing Root to take Yan away alone 2 3.
- He presents intelligence attributed to Minato and persuades Hiruzen to arrange teammates outside the Uchiha Clan 4.
- Assigned to Kakashi and Taichi, he survives Kakashi’s violent questioning and begins seeking methods to advance his eyes without conventional emotional bonds 8 15.
- His plan to provoke a controlled confrontation with Root collapses when clansmen fight in a populated area. He awakens his Sharingan, accepts responsibility, and obtains reduced punishments for those involved 27 28 31.
War and Foreign Diplomacy
- Yan arranges for punished Konoha ninja to undertake missions in the Land of Rain, directing most of the payments toward its people 32.
- Sent alone to the Land of Water battlefield under Danzo, he survives Kirigakure pursuit and seeks negotiations with Genji 35 38.
- He returns with intelligence about Kirigakure–Kumogakure cooperation and secures Danzo’s promise not to attack him openly during the war 49.
- Hiruzen later imprisons him with his chakra sealed. Isolation and the guards’ refusal to speak provoke his two-tomoe advancement 73 74.
- Yan subsequently rescues Shinkō and Konoha forces in the Land of Rivers, becoming a priority target for the opposing armies 81.
Education, Rupture, and Defection
- Yan wins support for taking Neji as a student and begins establishing the Uchiha preschool 94 95 99.
- After renewed conflict over Konoha’s leadership and Naruto’s treatment, he surrenders his forehead protector and denounces Hiruzen and Danzo 117 118.
- He defects and operates under protection in the Land of Rain; existing international arrangements continue despite his departure 120 124.
- An attempt to capture Orochimaru for immortality information fails when Inabi’s technique swallows the target. Yan’s remaining leads also collapse, leaving him in despair 135.
- He reassesses his cultivation, chooses the Confucian–Taoist path, and formally accepts Neji 140.
Hokage and Parallel-World Technology
- By his confrontation with Urashiki, Yan is Hokage; Kabuto subsequently identifies him specifically as the Fifth Hokage 184 188.
- He negotiates with Kabuto using the promised corpse of Urashiki as payment for information and help recovering Orochimaru 188.
- In a parallel Shinobi World, he teaches Sarada while pursuing scientific technology and Ōtsutsuki-related resources 195 197 202.
- During the confrontation with Urashiki, he abandons the corpse objective after obtaining the sought-after turtle and pouch, judging further pursuit too risky 207.
Expansion and the Moon Battle

- Mei agrees to marry him, and Kirigakure signs an alliance treaty with arrangements for future school construction 262.
Internal Punishments and Final Conflict
- Yan sentences Tobirama to ten years of extradimensional exile. He also orders the Nine-Tails extracted from Naruto for helping Shanyao escape, refusing Jiraiya’s offer to die in Naruto’s place 271.
- Obito’s Reflection shinjutsu turns the group’s attacks back upon them, leaving Yan and his allies near death while Obito takes Nagato’s Rinnegan 286.
- Yan continues fighting Obito while withholding Hikari and Sakura’s combined abilities for a decisive opening. Sarada later protects him from a coordinated ninjutsu assault 294 301.
- During the final battle, Shibai returns and begins draining the planet. Yan receives chakra through Hikari’s Yachihoko and sacrifices his life to summon a white-haired figure, who erases Shibai and rewinds the universe 304.
- After the reset, only Yan’s books remain. He lives on Blue Star without remembering his experiences, while Konoha’s leaders display unexplained impressions associated with him 305.
