History
Ancestry and Founding of Konoha
The clan traces its ancestry to Indra, the Sage of Six Paths’ eldest son. Its later ancestral tablets also recognize Hagoromo and Kaguya, whose names were only recently added when Itachi explains the lineage to Madara 190.
Madara helped found Konoha, an achievement Yan argues should remain part of the clan’s historical record regardless of Madara’s later actions. Yan also criticizes the Shrine’s incomplete records, particularly the gaps concerning Madara’s and Obito’s families 14.
Night of the Nine-Tails
During the Nine-Tails’ attack, Danzo’s forces obstruct the Uchiha instead of allowing them to support the Fourth Hokage. The ensuing confrontation includes accusations of espionage against Yan and even the infant Sasuke, which the Third Hokage condemns 2 4 5.
The Sharingan visible in the Nine-Tails’ eyes nevertheless makes the clan vulnerable to suspicion. Facing severe village losses and the danger of rebellion, the Third chooses temporary appeasement: the Uchiha are to be publicly credited with helping drive off the intruder 5.
Yan’s extravagant claims that the Uchiha are humble and kind become an unexpected restraint on their behavior. Clan members begin helping traumatized survivors, despite openly complaining that rescue work is far less familiar to them than killing 4 6.
Opposition to Danzo and Wartime Service
At a clan meeting, Yan persuades the Uchiha to oppose Danzo’s bid for power and support the Third Hokage’s return. Rather than immediately pursuing the Hokage position themselves, they are urged to build relationships with Konoha’s next generation 14.
Danzo later sends Root to provoke another confrontation. Jinyan’s response turns a restaurant into a battlefield, killing and injuring villagers. Yan offers to take sole responsibility so that both Uchiha and Root participants can atone through service 27 28.
The clan subsequently fights on Konoha’s wartime fronts. Uchiha and Hyūga fighters cover Shisui’s retreat during the fighting surrounding Shinkō’s rescue, while Yan’s and Shisui’s contributions make an immediate purge politically harder for Danzo to justify 80 85.
Reform and Renewed Distrust
After the alliance agreement ends the war, Yan pushes the clan toward education and institutional reform. The Uchiha adopt an annual ancestral observance, debate clan rules, and consider future Hokage candidates. They reject Fugaku and Shisui as suitable choices and decide to wait for Itachi 99 100.
Relations deteriorate again after Itachi uses his altered Sharingan to subdue Shukaku. Rather than accepting this as proof that the Uchiha can protect the village from tailed beasts, Konoha’s leadership suspects the clan of concealing dangerous abilities. The Third orders Fugaku and Itachi to stay out of Naruto’s affairs 115 116 117.
Yan challenges both the exclusion and his clan’s willingness to accept it. He then takes public blame in a scheme that diverts hostility away from Naruto and the Uchiha. Koharu and Homura cooperate, and the Third temporarily abandons further action against the clan 117 119 123.
An Uchiha Hokage
Following Danzo’s death, Yan becomes the Fifth Hokage with broad support. Itachi leads the clan, while Yan stops attending its meetings or involving himself in its internal affairs 168 230.
The surviving, powerful Uchiha astonish adult Sasuke when he arrives from another world. This world’s Itachi has not massacred the clan, and its younger members have developed through education and cultivation rather than following their counterparts’ histories 181 182 183.
Kaguya later settles at the compound with Sarada and declares her intention to teach the girl and eventually lead the Uchiha against the Ōtsutsuki Main Family 239.
Universal Rewind
In the final battle, Yan dies summoning a white-haired figure who erases Shibai and rewinds the universe 304.
The restored Night of the Nine-Tails leaves the clan’s future unresolved. Fugaku worries about its prospects, Konoha’s elders again discuss how to handle it, and several characters express ideas or names they cannot explain—including Danzo’s reference to Yan. Koharu also finds herself unable to support targeting the Uchiha 305.
Organization and Institutions
| Institution / Practice | Function |
|---|---|
| Clan head and meetings | Fugaku convenes members to debate political endorsements, succession prospects, ancestral rites, and clan rules. Itachi later holds the leadership 14 100 230. |
| Uchiha Shrine | Houses historical documents and distributes household copies of the revised family tree 14 101. |
| Family tree | Records every member, whether or not they awaken the Sharingan. Yan intends it to preserve achievements, clarify ancestry, and distinguish blood relatives from Sharingan transplant recipients 14 47. |
| Library Pavilion | Provides access to the clan’s recorded ancestral history 190. |
| Uchiha Kindergarten | Implements Yan’s emphasis on reforming the next generation. Its reach eventually extends to Black Zetsu, whom Kaguya sends there to learn literacy 99 117 241. |
| Contribution-based resources | Access to ninjutsu and resources depends on contributions rather than awakened eyes. Even a Mangekyō user is not automatically entitled to higher-level or forbidden techniques 101. |
| Uchiha Sealing Grounds | Holds Orochimaru during one period and contains the Eight-Tails and Hikari. Knowledge of Hikari’s confinement is passed orally between clan heads 138 189. |
Customs and Reform
- Annual ancestor worship: The clan agrees to hold ancestral rites every April fourth 100.
- Childhood education: Every Uchiha child begins studying the Six Arts at five as part of the reformed heritage 197.
- Village integration: Yan proposes reserving crest-bearing clothes for ancestral rites so members will appear no different from other villagers in everyday life 47.
- Etiquette: After three years, the new rules have substantially improved the clan’s reputation without eliminating its arrogance. Members remain disdainful, but do not casually bully others 86.
- Filial values: Obito identifies benevolence, righteousness, propriety, wisdom, and trustworthiness as clan values when rallying the Uchiha dead against Hagoromo 280.
- Wealth: The clan possesses a thousand years of accumulated assets. Itachi considers its novel-sale income alone sufficient to support carefree living for hundreds of years 240.
Abilities and Training
Sharingan
The Sharingan is the clan’s defining ocular ability, recognizable enough that enemies avert their eyes when Yan reveals it 38.
- Provides motion-tracking vision and supports ocular genjutsu 107 203.
- Can awaken through intense emotional fluctuations; the death of a loved one is not the only trigger 25 27.
- Does not necessarily begin at one tomoe: Obito awakens with two, a precedent Yan wants preserved in the family tree 14.
- Carries psychological risks. Yan describes a cycle in which loss, resentment, and an intensified sense of self strengthen the eyes while encouraging hostility, self-blame, or avoidance 22.
- Is not sufficient against every opponent: even Mangekyō tracking cannot clearly follow Jigen and Nagato’s high-speed exchange 203.
Mangekyō Sharingan and Susanoo
Mangekyō users possess individualized ocular techniques and can manifest Susanoo. Their abilities differ substantially rather than forming one uniform clan technique set 82 91 164 189.
- Kotoamatsukami: Shisui’s eyes provide mind-altering abilities central to Yan’s memory-manipulation plans 91.
- Yachihoko: Hikari can remotely control minds and chakra. Madara considers her release dangerous even to himself 189.
- Transformation dōjutsu: Haruna describes an ability to assume imagined forms and use their powers 164.
- Susanoo: Provides immense offensive and defensive power, but is not invulnerable; the Six-Tails’ acidic gas begins melting Xiaren’s manifestation 164.
- Limits: Mangekyō use can consume enormous amounts of chakra, and transplanting relatives’ eyes does not guarantee an Eternal Mangekyō awakening 82 212.
Haoran Qi
Yan introduces Confucian self-cultivation as a way to reform the Uchiha and counter the Sharingan’s harmful influence. By the time he teaches Sarada, he presents Haoran Qi as a required part of the clan’s heritage 22 197.
- Emphasizes recognizing one’s thoughts and resisting self-serving excuses for harmful conduct 22.
- Alters Itachi’s Sharingan, allowing him to calm hearts, perceive fears, and dispel resentment 116.
- Offers an alternative to bereavement-driven awakening; Itachi later confirms that sacrificing loved ones is no longer necessary 190.
- Produces a presence Hikari compares to sunlight. Itachi attributes this to Haoran Qi’s intensely yang nature 193.
- Does not automatically erase pride: the reformed clan remains theatrical and boastful, and young Sasuke’s public manner contrasts sharply with Itachi’s politeness 86 214.
Notable Members
| Member | Role / Significance |
|---|---|
| Uchiha Fugaku | Initial clan head and father of Itachi and Sasuke. His cautious responses to village pressure repeatedly clash with Yan’s approach 14 117. |
| Uchiha Itachi | Later clan head, leading example of Haoran Qi cultivation, and trainer of legal officials throughout the Land of Fire 116 230 247. |
| Uchiha Yan | Principal reformer and Fifth Hokage. Keeps village leadership separate from clan administration after taking office 168 230. |
| Uchiha Shisui | Battlefield prodigy and Kotoamatsukami user; initially struggles with assuming responsibility for the entire clan’s problems 50 55 91. |

| Uchiha Jinyan | Combative clansman whose response to Root’s provocation causes a disastrous public battle 27. |

| Uchiha Hikari | Warring States–era Mangekyō user exploited by her own clan and sealed by rival clans; possesses Yachihoko 47 189. |
Relationships
- Konohagakure — Founding affiliation and the focus of Yan’s integration reforms. Repeated suspicion from the Hokage Building strains this relationship without making the clan uniformly opposed to the village 5 47 117.
- Third Hokage — Alternates between appeasement, cooperation, and renewed distrust. His fear of the clan’s concealed ocular power repeatedly undermines promises made to Yan 5 99 116 117.
- Danzo and Root — Principal early antagonists, responsible for obstruction, provocations, and plans to eliminate the clan. Danzo ultimately dies protecting a group that includes Itachi 5 27 85 165.
- Utatane Koharu and Mitokado Homura — Initially support containment policies, but later cooperate with Yan to protect the clan and warn against provoking rebellion 5 123.
- Hyūga Clan — Both battlefield partners and political rivals. Itachi later insists that neither he nor Neji should become Hokage or Daimyō, preserving balance between the two clans 80 116 247.
- Kaguya Ōtsutsuki — Revered ancestor and later resident of the compound. The clan sides with her, while she teaches Sarada and cultivates Haoran Qi 239 255 273.
- Orochimaru — Enemy threatened with clan retaliation after the wartime crisis; later imprisoned in the Uchiha Sealing Grounds 82 138.
- Parallel-world Uchiha — Adult Sasuke and Sarada receive access to the surviving clan’s books, training, and cultivation heritage, exposing the differences between the two worlds 181 182 195 197.
