Background and Identity

Ning Jiao is one of Jin Li’s avatars, assigned to cultivate connections with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect. His apparent relationship to Ning Rongrong provides his entry into her circle, but his claimed family history is a cover rather than an established biological connection 20 28.

He initially tells Ning Rongrong that he is her son. She rejects the claim and instead suspects that the similar-looking boy could be her younger brother. He accepts her demand to call her “Big Sister” in exchange for candied hawthorn skewers and accompanies her to Shrek Academy 20.

When Ning Fengzhi later asks about his parents, Ning Jiao decides against repeating the “child from the future” explanation used by other avatars. He instead claims to be Ning Rongrong’s dudou come to life. The narration explicitly identifies this as a lie; Ning Fengzhi chooses not to press him, while Ning Rongrong openly rejects it 34 36 37.

Personality

Ning Jiao is mischievous, shameless, and fond of provoking reactions. He trades teasing remarks with Ning Rongrong, flirts openly, and claims to be “pure as ice and jade” despite behavior that makes Liu Erlong laugh at the description. He also attacks Liu Erlong before she finishes introducing herself, declaring that rules exist to be broken 25 32 39.

His confidence is backed by a genuine enjoyment of combat. Fighting Liu Erlong gives him an unusually satisfying contest: unlike his other avatars’ one-sided encounters, their battle lets him exchange repeated, evenly matched blows. Liu Erlong nevertheless recognizes his limited combat experience and deliberately refrains from exploiting his openings 33.

He is protective of his companions but practical about danger. He initially refuses to enter the Star Dou Great Forest’s divine campaign, then changes his decision when Ning Rongrong explains that she wants to become a god. His concern for comfortable living and sensible training also drives him to challenge Shrek Academy’s arrangements 40 42 45.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Journey to Shrek and the Rose Hotel

Ning Jiao joins Ning Rongrong’s trip to Shrek Academy, with Zhu Zhuqing accompanying them after their meeting at a food stall. His rapid Martial Soul evolution and purple Soul Rings prompt Rongrong’s guards to send reports to the sect 20 25.

At the Rose Hotel, Rongrong’s provocative joking causes Dai Mubai to believe Zhu Zhuqing has become involved with Ning Jiao. Dai attacks, but Ning Jiao first restrains him physically and then cripples him with the mirror-assisted cannon. He leaves Dai alive, preserving Zhu Zhubao’s opportunity to obtain Dai’s bloodline 26 27.

Entrance Examination and Sect Recruitment

Ning Jiao reveals his level-40 cultivation, nine-treasure seal, and three purple rings during enrollment. In the final assessment, he fulfills the passing condition by forcing Liu Erlong to summon her Martial Soul, then continues fighting her for the sake of testing his strength 30 32 33.

His performance draws competing offers from Tang Hao and Ning Fengzhi. Answering simply that his surname is Ning, he aligns himself with the Seven Treasure Glazed Tile Sect 34 35.

Academy Reform and the Star Dou Expedition

Ning Jiao challenges the academy’s tolerance of Dai Mubai and demands better living and training conditions. Liu Erlong pays for temporary hotel accommodation and plans renovations and separate Inner Court classes. When Flender later tries to add Oscar to their expedition, Ning Jiao insists that their agreement be honored 40 41 42.

Although reluctant to join the campaign against Blue Sky, he accompanies Ning Rongrong after hearing her ambition to attain godhood. In the forest, he absorbs his fourth ring, reaches level 46, and acquires Space-Breaking Seal 45 46.

Return to Shrek

Following the disastrous expedition, Ning Jiao is shown awake and assuring Zhu Zhuqing that he is unharmed. He, Ning Rongrong, and Zhu Zhuqing remain the Inner Court’s only students and discuss their future at Shrek, including staying until graduation or returning home 51 53.

• His name is taken from Yin Jiao, identified in the narration as the second owner of the Heaven-Overturning Seal. Guang Chengzi was rejected because the name did not suit the surname Ning 20.
