Background

Yu Xiaogang is Yu Yuanzhen's son and comes from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. His father invested heavily in him from childhood and continued supporting him despite his poor cultivation results. By the opening chapters, Yu Xiaogang has left his sect and is at Shrek Academy, where Tang San recognizes him as his teacher 1 12 63.

He belongs to the Golden Iron Triangle alongside Flender and Liu Erlong. He previously fled his wedding with Liu Erlong, leaving her attached to him for more than twenty years. When she discovers his whereabouts through the sky screen, she seeks him out and offers him protection in Heaven Dou City 33 59 64 74.

His reputation and future ambitions center on Tang San. He regards his disciple's eventual success as proof of his own worth and repeatedly fears that Tang Hao's presence, or his own diminishing usefulness, will make Tang San abandon him 4 35 58.

Appearance

Yu Xiaogang initially has a haggard face and a flat-top hairstyle. He habitually stands with his hands behind his back to project an authoritative, detached manner 1 3.

  • Early transformation symptoms: Pig-like squeals, an itchy nose, enlarging ears, and irritation around his tailbone appear before he leaves Douluo 43 44 57.
  • Pig-demon form: Develops a long snout, large fan-like ears, and a bare pig's tail while retaining a partially humanoid body 65.
  • Later build: Appears bloated when teleported to Five Finger Mountain 78.
  • Martial Soul Possession: His skin turns white, while his existing snout, ears, and tail remain unchanged 82.
  • Imprisonment: Beneath One Finger Mountain, his rear and pink tail protrude from the rocks rather than his head 86.

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is intensely concerned with recognition. He conceals ignorance to preserve his Grandmaster image, takes pleasure in shocking an audience, and treats criticism of his theories as an attack on his identity. When Zhao Wuji publicly exposes Shrek, the destruction of his reputation hurts him more than the prospect of death 1 14 33.

His contempt for the Primordial World coexists with envy of its opportunities. He dismisses its inhabitants as lacking ambition, then immediately tries its Qi Refining Method. He covets Ginseng Fruit, dragon transformation, divine patronage, and the Peach of Immortality while insisting that his theories should govern the world offering them 2 13 32 46 48 86.

He manipulates personal attachments to secure support. His promises to rescue Xiao Wu reinforce Tang San's dependence on him; his encouragement of Flender's Buddhist ambitions is intended to obtain future backing. Privately, he views Bibi Dong and an imagined Heavenly Court princess as potential resources for his advancement 4 15 35 64.

His defiance is selective. He threatens beings beyond his strength when separated from them by a screen, but becomes submissive when Tang Hao or Yang Jian can directly endanger him. He also assumes compassionate immortals can be pressured through accusations of injustice 4 46 64 66 82.

Fear of judgment increasingly drives his actions. Knowledge of tribulations, the Underworld's trials, and the Eighteen Levels of Hell turns his pursuit of fame into a search for survival and immortality. Although he recognizes that his conduct could qualify him for several hells, he insists that the Underworld should not judge a theorist such as himself 46 54 56 59.

Abilities & Skills

Cultivation Theory and Instruction

Yu Xiaogang compiles observations into notebooks and presents them as authoritative systems for cultivation and divine government 5 7 34 46 70.

  • Ten Core Competencies for Becoming a God in the Primordial World: Includes obtaining merit, with delivering babies recorded as an example. He later lectures on Qian Renxue's path to godhood 7 70.
  • Restrictions on divine authority: Develops proposals intended to constrain gods and Sages, including their use of tribulations 46 70.
  • Instruction of Tang San: Encourages his disciple and claims credit when Tang San develops a Self-Created Soul Skill after his intervention 35.
  • Limitations: His comparison of the Northern Julu Continent to a slightly more dangerous Star Dou Great Forest is questioned by observers. Qian Daoliu also condemns his presentation of Qian Renxue's experiences as his own research 5 70.
  • Unproven promises: His claims that he can make the Heavenly Court follow his theories or reliably turn his audience into gods are not demonstrated 35 70.

Original Martial Soul: Luo Sanpao

Luo Sanpao is an external, detached Martial Soul that originally accompanies Yu Xiaogang and his two yellow Soul Rings 48 64.

  • Yu Xiaogang hopes Di Tian's Soul Ring or the Dragon Gate could evolve Luo Sanpao into a dragon 37 48.
  • In the Primordial World, spiritual qi transforms Luo Sanpao into an independent dragon life-form, no longer subject to Yu Xiaogang's constraints 65.
  • Luo Sanpao's resulting strength does not become Yu Xiaogang's own advancement: it turns against him, and Huanglong subsequently takes it away 65 66.

Domestic-Pig Martial Soul

Yang Jian awakens this replacement Martial Soul after Yu Xiaogang's arrival at Five Finger Mountain 82.

  • Allows Martial Soul Possession, unlike his former detached Martial Soul 82.
  • Turns his skin white without removing his existing porcine features 82.
  • Provides no demonstrated advantage sufficient to satisfy his tournament ambitions; he later demands Luo Sanpao's return 86.

Pig-Demon Physiology

His transformation alters his underlying bloodline rather than merely disguising his appearance. Yang Jian recognizes that such a fundamental change exceeds his own ability and suspects a Sage's involvement 82.

  • Withstands the Northern Julu Continent's cold better than before 68.
  • Produces foul-smelling saliva that melts nearby snow with corrosive smoke 65.
  • Cannot voluntarily retract his snout, ears, or tail 65.

Persuasion and Manipulation

Yu Xiaogang uses reassurance, threats, and promises of future status to keep others invested in him 4 15 79.

  • Calms Tang San by promising opportunities to rescue Xiao Wu 5 32.
  • Persuades Flender to maintain his interest in Buddhism so Shrek can provide him with powerful backing 15.
  • Nearly obtains the Nine-Colored Gauze by promising to help Xiao Wu rebuild her body and support her relationship with Tang San 79.
  • Fails to draw Huanglong into discussing his theories; the immortal simply permits him to leave and takes Luo Sanpao 66.

Equipment & Items

  • Theory notebooks — Record his analyses of the Primordial World, methods of attaining godhood, and proposed restrictions on divine authority 5 7 46 70.
  • Storage Soul Tool — Carries his notebook and supplies prepared for ascension 61 70.
  • Two yellow Soul Rings — Belong to his original Soul Master cultivation and shatter when he switches paths 64 65.
  • Nine-Colored Gauze — sought, not secured — Claims Xiao Wu should return it to him and nearly receives it, but Bibi Dong intervenes before he takes possession 78 79.

Relationships

  • Tang San — Disciple and the intended proof of his teaching ability. Their outward affection conceals mutual self-interest: Yu Xiaogang fears becoming unnecessary, while Tang San eventually plans to exploit his remaining connections before seeking revenge for Xiao Wu 4 35 79 80.
  • Tang Hao — Tang San's father and a source of intimidation. Yu Xiaogang envies his paternal position, submits to his threats before ascending, and privately imagines retaliating once stronger 58 64.
  • Flender — Golden Iron Triangle companion and persistent defender. He supports Yu Xiaogang's theories, helps him after his arrival at Five Finger Mountain, and pleads for his release from One Finger Mountain 5 21 78 87.
  • Liu Erlong — Former bride and longtime admirer. Yu Xiaogang pretends devotion while planning to leave her behind; she eventually rejects him and refuses responsibility for rescuing him 59 61 64 74 87.
  • Bibi Dong — Former romantic attachment whom he hopes to use for access to Qian Renxue and the Heavenly Court. Their history becomes public at Five Finger Mountain 64 79 80.
  • Yu Yuanzhen — Father and longtime supporter. He initially celebrates Yu Xiaogang's ascension, but ultimately orders his expulsion under pressure from the clan elders 63 69.
  • Luo Sanpao — Former Martial Soul. Years of beatings and poor treatment leave it deeply resentful; upon becoming independent, it threatens to kill him 65.
  • Xiao Wu — Tang San's beloved, whom Yu Xiaogang also calls his disciple. His repeated rescue promises give way to conflict over the Nine-Colored Gauze and exploitation of her hope of reuniting with Tang San 35 78 79.
  • Scarred Rose King / Scarface King — Bai Ze Ridge ruler who makes him a favored bedmate, bestows the title Rose Grandmaster, and gives him a seat beside his throne. Yu Xiaogang regards this treatment as humiliation to overcome through power 69 70.
  • Venerable Celestial Yuqing — Intended divine patron. An intact spirit tablet convinces Yu Xiaogang that he has been accepted, but the accompanying divine perspective focuses on the rare Huanglong bloodline later identified in Luo Sanpao 58 66.
  • Perfected Huanglong — Spares Yu Xiaogang and takes Luo Sanpao as a mount. Yu Xiaogang interprets the encounter as theft and a refusal to recognize his theories 66.
  • Yang Jian — Awakens his domestic-pig Martial Soul, then imprisons him for disrupting the tournament 82 86 87.
  • Ning Rongrong — Openly questions his hypocrisy and mocks his replacement Martial Soul and tournament demands 13 82 86.
  • Zhao Wuji — His public exposure of Shrek damages Yu Xiaogang's reputation and contributes to the group's flight from Suotuo City 33.

Story Role / Major Arcs

World Fusion and the First Ascenders

When Douluo Star announces its return to the Primordial World, Yu Xiaogang denounces the decision as dictatorial and argues that the Primordial World should merge into Douluo instead. Tang San supports him, establishing their pattern of reinforcing one another's judgments 1.

The first ascenders' experiences reveal an enormous difference in power between the worlds. Yu Xiaogang responds by belittling the Primordial World's inhabitants while recording its opportunities. When Xiao Wu faces a giant eagle, he threatens to destroy the entire world—a declaration calculated to preserve Tang San's attachment after Tang Hao's arrival 2 3 4 5.

Exposure and Flight to Heaven Dou

Zhao Wuji's livestream revelations ruin Yu Xiaogang's reputation and draw hostile Soul Masters toward Shrek. He refuses to separate from Tang San, and Liu Erlong's arrival redirects the group toward Heaven Dou City. They subsequently hide at Blue Tyrant Academy 33 34.

There, he continues expanding his theories and interprets Tang San's newly created Soul Skill as vindication of his teaching. Meanwhile, his unexplained pig-like symptoms grow increasingly noticeable 35 43 44.

Divine Patronage and Third Ascension

After Tang Hao's spirit tablets shatter, Yu Xiaogang pays homage to the Three Pure Ones. Only Yuqing's tablet remains intact, convincing him that a powerful patron will receive him. He prepares for ascension and imagines winning the coming tournament to attract Nüwa's attention 58 61 63.

He is selected in the third ascension alongside Flender, Liu Erlong, and Bibi Dong, but Tang San is not. Before leaving, he submits to Tang Hao's demand that any tournament reward be reserved for Tang San, while privately planning to escape Tang Hao's control 63 64.

Transformation and Loss of Luo Sanpao

Arriving alone in the Northern Julu Continent, Yu Xiaogang immediately attempts to abandon Soul Master cultivation. Luo Sanpao instead evolves into an independent dragon and threatens him in retaliation for decades of mistreatment. Yu Xiaogang shatters his Soul Rings, only to complete his own transformation into a pig demon 64 65.

Huanglong interrupts the confrontation, permits Yu Xiaogang to leave, and takes Luo Sanpao away. Although the intervention saves him, Yu Xiaogang resents losing the creature he now considers essential to winning the tournament 66.

Rose Grandmaster of Bai Ze Ridge

Yu Xiaogang reaches Bai Ze Ridge and encounters Xiao Wu in the Scarred Rose King's household. After becoming intoxicated, he is taken to the king's bed and subsequently receives the title Rose Grandmaster. The public broadcast prompts his clan to expel him and strip his surname 69.

He attempts to turn his new position into authority by lecturing kneeling demons on godhood and divine government. A later escape scheme involving Xiao Wu and the Nine-Colored Gauze fails after he insists on acting independently, leaving him behind while she escapes 70 77 78.

Five Finger Mountain Tournament and Imprisonment

The Douluo Star Will teleports Yu Xiaogang to the tournament gathering, ending his ordeal at Bai Ze Ridge. He immediately disputes possession of the Nine-Colored Gauze with Xiao Wu and uses promises of bodily restoration to pressure her into surrendering it. Bibi Dong intervenes before the exchange is completed 78 79.

After Yang Jian awakens his domestic-pig Martial Soul, Yu Xiaogang demands the recovery of Luo Sanpao. He then proposes counting the entire Golden Iron Triangle as one contestant so they can use their Martial Soul Fusion Skill 82 86.

Yang Jian punishes the disruption by pinning him beneath One Finger Mountain on the Great Heavenly Venerable's orders. Flender's rescue attempt fails, and Yang Jian states that only a person bound to Yu Xiaogang by fate will release him when the time is right 86 87.
