Background / History
Arrival in Gotham
Chen Mo transmigrates into the body of an undocumented boy named Peter. The original boy had escaped the docks, wandered Gotham, and starved to death beside a trash can. His father's surname had been Ma before changing it to Parker. Chen Mo rejects both “Peter Parker” and “Ma Peter,” choosing to retain his own name 2.
Before transmigrating, Chen Mo was an art student who consistently ranked first in his major courses. In Gotham, his lack of identification and his age make ordinary employment difficult, leaving him dependent on precarious work while the Spider-Man Roleplaying System pushes him into nightly patrols 1 3 17.
Early Patrols and Batman
During an early patrol, Chen Mo rescues Molly from a knife-wielding robber but cannot accept her ten-dollar offer because the system forbids payment from civilians 1. His search for work fares little better: Larry tries to make him rob a drugstore, then attempts to seize and sell him when he refuses. Chen Mo escapes by arranging apparently accidental collisions involving dock equipment 3.
He encounters Batman while intervening against Scarface and later fights alongside him against Maroni's men. Chen Mo wraps a live grenade in webbing and shields nearby people, suffering shoulder wounds. He also deliberately uses the injury to seek Batman's sympathy and support 4 6.
Batman recognizes the performance and questions his motives. Chen Mo admits that he no longer knows whether his heroic behavior is merely acting, asking what the difference would be if he maintained it for his entire life. Batman subsequently continues investigating his identity and changing abilities 7 8.
Gotham's Poverty and Comic Income
An encounter with a drug dealer exploiting a twelve-year-old girl sharply challenges Chen Mo's understanding of justice. He rejects the dealer's claim that paying her makes him a good person, gives the girl the dealer's money, and promises to return 9 10. After stopping a bank robbery, he takes the cash despite the system's warning; he later recalls scattering sacks of money over the slums 11 13.
His attempt at stable employment at Gary's Sunshine Bakery ends when Gary and his wife proposition him. On leaving, Chen Mo takes twenty dollars from the register as wages and explicitly takes nothing more 13 14.
Drawing becomes a more viable income source. Under “Gotham's Seasoned Driver,” he creates Fallen Hero: Gotham Phantom, an underground Batman comic. His first installment earns him two thousand dollars after deductions, helping fund a protective Spider-Man suit 17. He later discovers that the widely distributed comic earned him only a one-time manuscript payment, rather than ongoing income 43.
Killer Croc and the Gang Conflict
Chen Mo's first fight with Killer Croc succeeds in saving a dockworker but exposes his limits. Although his attacks crack Croc's scales, he exhausts himself, damages his suit, and retreats with bruised ribs 20.
Using his enhanced learning ability, he studies crocodile anatomy, reviews Croc's movements, and maps the docks. In their rematch, he combines high-frequency sound, adhesive-treated webbing, and a planned container collapse to immobilize Croc 21 22.
His cooperation with Batman expands during Gotham's gang conflict. Chen Mo rescues civilians, helps uncover Black Mask's weapons cache and planned attack on Wayne Tower, disables sonic cannons, and captures the assassin Shadow 25 26. He later blocks reinforcements with a carefully controlled container collapse and joins Batman in raids that cripple Penguin's elite troops 31 33 34.
School Enrollment and the Meal Crisis
The Wayne Foundation's registration campaign brings Chen Mo into compulsory education. Free meals attract him, while the system signals that an underage superhero should attend school. He enrolls under his own name and receives temporary student ID CM-0719 at East End No. 7 Public Middle School 39 40 41.
There he meets Barbara Gordon and notices gang recruitment and contraband exchanges among students. As Spider-Man, he subsequently tracks down an adult organizing students who had cornered him and warns the children against bullying and similar work 41 43.
When failed lunch cards leave students hungry, Chen Mo initially considers taking meals reserved for visitors. Barbara warns that theft would invite harsher security. They instead use a staged cafeteria accident and food-safety procedures to have thirty-six remaining meals distributed to students who missed lunch. Bruce Wayne later identifies Chen Mo's role while investigating the meal program's failures 45 47 50.
Appearance
Chen Mo has a youthful Asian appearance and an initially underfed, slender build. His thin wrists and unimposing arms conceal strength far beyond that of an ordinary adult 1 14 36 47.
- Early costume: Red-and-blue clothing sewn from old curtains, a hood, and a mask cut from an old T-shirt. Crude goggle lenses are later visible in the mask 1 4 16.
- Upgraded costume: A fitted red-and-blue Spider-Man suit with a chest emblem, concealed protective layers, and armor around the chest and shoulders 17 19 25.
- After his strength upgrade: His muscles do not visibly enlarge despite the increase to eight tons 36.
Personality
Chen Mo's sunny Spider-Man persona contrasts with his sarcastic internal commentary. He lectures criminals about redemption, jokes through gunfire, and leaves mocking notes on captured offenders. Batman identifies his chatter and apparent panic as deliberate distractions rather than simple incompetence 1 4 7 26.
His heroism initially mixes genuine concern with practical motives: system rewards, survival, and the hope of gaining Batman as a powerful backer. Nevertheless, he shields criminals from a grenade, checks defeated opponents for signs of life, and carefully directs falling containers to avoid casualties 6 8 31.
Gotham's exploitation angers him more deeply than his banter suggests. He refuses to accept cruelty as kindness merely because worse abuses exist elsewhere. His willingness to redistribute stolen bank money also shows a growing conflict between his own judgment and the system's warnings 10 11 13.
He is affectionate toward his rescued puppy, Bruce, and openly wants comfort, reliable food, and better equipment. His admiration for Batman coexists with frustration at Batman's secrecy, refusal to offer rides, and habit of leaving him cleanup work 19 25 26 43.
Abilities & Skills
Spider-Man Roleplaying System
The system grants abilities through roleplaying milestones while policing Chen Mo's conduct 1 2 8.
- Prohibits accepting payment from rescued civilians; one warning threatens an 89% chance of falling off a wall within twenty-four hours if he accepts Molly's money 1.
- Threatens power degradation when he considers committing robbery 3.
- Warns against behavior incompatible with his heroic role, including killing, and signals that he should receive a basic education 31 39.
- Communicates through notifications and beeps rather than ordinary conversation 39.
Enhanced Physiology
His spider mutations enhance strength, speed, reflexes, agility, endurance, and recovery 17 20 21.
- Can cling to walls, perform aerial flips, and change direction using web anchors 1 4 20.
- Lifts a half-ton concrete slab one-handed while treating a trapped casualty 25.
- Eventually reaches a system-stated eight-ton strength limit 36.
- Heals bruised ribs through his spider genes, but still experiences pain during recovery 21.
- Remains vulnerable to shrapnel, physical exhaustion, joint strain, and difficulty controlling newly increased strength 6 20 32 36.
Organic Webbing
Chen Mo produces webbing directly from his wrists, initially without needing mechanical web-shooters 2.
- Uses it for swinging, restraints, disarming gunmen, sealing exits, and manipulating heavy objects 4 26 31.
- Improvises medical supports, including a splint for Bruce's leg and wound compression for injured civilians 19 25.
- Creates “Blast-Proof Cling Film” by layering webbing around a grenade to help contain and redirect its explosion 6.
- Biological production depends on nutrition and protein reserves; severe malnutrition initially makes the strands too weak to support him 2 3.
- Before later upgrades, the webbing cannot withstand every maneuver he considers against Killer Croc. Heavy use also leaves his wrist swollen and painful 21 32.
- Upgraded restraints tighten when captured thieves struggle 37.
Spider-Sense
His beginner Spider-Sense warns him of danger through tingling or sharper sensations at the back of his head 8 20.
- Detects environmental hazards, incoming attacks, and a skilled pursuer 8 24 26.
- Helps him evade dense gunfire during the assault on Penguin's stronghold 34.
- Does not automatically identify the source of every warning; a faint alert leaves him uncertain while pigeons are nearby 18.
Enhanced Learning and Tactical Analysis
A system reward grants part of Peter Parker's intellectual abilities, transforming how Chen Mo processes technical information 21.
- Reconstructs Croc's movements and anatomy as detailed mental models 21.
- Applies mechanics to cranes, counterweights, container collapses, and restricted movement spaces 21 22.
- Makes precise web adjustments to block a convoy without crushing its riders 31.
- Studies Batman's throws and combinations to improve his own fighting technique 26.
- Can find the constant analysis difficult to stop; even his dreams become occupied by Croc's anatomy and bite-force data 21.
Combat, Art, and Craftsmanship
- Close combat: Uses throws, wrist locks, joint dislocations, kicks, and web-assisted strikes, though he acknowledges relying heavily on superior strength rather than polished technique 1 9 20 26.
- Illustration: Has professional-level training in proportions, perspective, lighting, and color; creates the Gotham Phantom comic 17.
- Tailoring: Designs, sews, and repairs his own costumes, incorporating armor and mobility-enhancing materials 17 21.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Protective Spider-Man suit — Made with approximately $360 in materials, including ballistic nylon, polymer fiber, and lightweight titanium-alloy plates. A thin chest protection layer can stop a small-caliber handgun round at close range; it does not provide equivalent protection against shotguns or rifles 17 19.
- Homemade web-shooters — Supplement his organic webbing with industrial adhesive for the Killer Croc rematch. He later wears them beneath his school clothing 22 41.
- High-frequency sonic devices — Used to disorient Killer Croc and disrupt his attempts to climb and charge 22.
- Belt pouch and sticky notes — Carry the messages he leaves with captured offenders, including recovery notices and mocking drawings 19 26 37.
- Secondhand sewing machine and art supplies — Support costume maintenance and comic production; both become recurring expenses 17 35 37.
Relationships
- Batman / Bruce Wayne — Investigates Chen Mo before becoming a recurring crimefighting associate. Chen Mo knows his civilian identity, seeks his approval and support, and frequently teases him. Batman eventually provides a passenger seat in the Batmobile; he also recognizes Chen Mo during school registration 6 7 23 33 39.
- Barbara Gordon — Schoolmate and collaborator in the cafeteria intervention. She recognizes his skill at engineering distractions and remains curious about how dangerous or troublesome he might be 41 45 47.
- Bruce, the puppy — Rescued after three thugs injure him beside his dead mother. Chen Mo names him Bruce, treats his broken hind leg, and takes him home despite the additional food and medical costs 19 20 35.
- Molly — An early robbery victim who offers him ten dollars out of concern for his condition. His system forces him to refuse 1.
- Agent White — Intermediary for his underground comic, arranging manuscript and payment exchanges through a concealed alley drop 17.
- Killer Croc — Opponent whose initial physical advantage forces Chen Mo to retreat and prepare a technical counterstrategy 20 21 22.
