Background / History

Early life and academic research

Pamela lost her biological father at a young age. Her stepfather sexually assaulted her, and her mother later died of illness. She experienced bullying in high school, ostracism at university, and the theft of her academic research 332.

Before Woodrue’s experiment, Pamela had already researched pheromones capable of controlling people. Her records connected their use on her stepfather to his death 321.

At Gotham University, she studied botany and maintained plants in a greenhouse. Although shy in conversation, she could describe individual plants’ growth and care in considerable detail 314.

Meeting Chen Mo

Pamela met Chen Mo after stumbling while carrying a potted plant. He caught both her and the pot, helped carry it to the greenhouse, and offered to help again. They exchanged phone numbers after he asked whether she could provide plant references for his comics 314.

Her attraction developed quickly. She shared photographs and research with him, welcomed his greenhouse visits, and became jealous of his closeness to Barbara Gordon. Chen Mo reassured her that Barbara was a good friend and continued helping with her work 317 321.

Hoping to prevent Pamela’s tragic future, Chen Mo arranged for her adviser to be replaced. The new adviser allowed her to retain her research and authorship, and Chen Mo encouraged her to preserve her drafts. Pamela nevertheless began seeking a way to make him love her, while deciding against using her existing pheromones because she did not want to harm him 320 321 324.

Woodrue’s experiment

Woodrue restrained Pamela in an off-campus laboratory and subjected her to an experiment that caused plants to grow beneath her skin. When Chen Mo called, a vine brought her phone within reach, allowing her to ask for help 323.

Chen Mo and Peter entered the laboratory while Batman and Robin confronted Woodrue. Roots from Pamela’s back had grown through her chair and into a cultivation tank, preventing the rescuers from simply carrying her away. The team dismantled the connected machinery and stopped the surrounding plant growth from spreading farther 323.

Pamela began sensing every plant in the building as though it were part of her body. Damage to those plants caused her distress, while her irritation with nearby people triggered involuntary vine attacks. Recognizing that her reactions were becoming dangerous, she feared she might hurt Chen Mo, whom she did not yet know was Spider-Man 323 324.

In an apparent attempt to die before she could harm him, Pamela withdrew into a mass of branches and roots and plunged into the river. The search recovered plant debris and a small lock of red hair, but not Pamela herself 324.

Revenge and the Wayne Tower attack

Pamela survived. Using Gotham’s plants to locate Woodrue in prison, she climbed the walls with vines and strangled him in his cell. She expressed no regret afterward 326.

Discovering woodland cleared for a Wayne Enterprises factory expansion, Pamela treated the destruction as violence against her own kind. A tabloid linking Chen Mo to Bruce Wayne strengthened her determination to remove him from Wayne Manor, even if doing so required killing Bruce 326.

To occupy Batman, she visited Victor Fries and exploited his resentment toward students who had mocked him. Her pheromones also placed him under her influence, helping turn his anger into a public attack 329 332.

As Poison Ivy, Pamela took Wayne Tower hostage and demanded that Bruce personally agree to close riverside factories and halt woodland clearing. She initially allowed Spider-Man to evacuate some employees because he had helped rescue her from Woodrue, but attacked when he continued opposing her 331.

Her airborne pheromones failed against his mask’s filtration. A toxin-laden kiss through the mask induced an illusion, but Chen Mo resisted and pretended to cooperate until the remaining hostages were released. He then defeated her and arranged medical transport 331 332.

Supervised care and escape

Chen Mo argued that Pamela needed treatment, supervision, and a place where she could grow plants rather than ordinary confinement at Arkham. Her care room had sunlight, inspected plants, and an adjoining greenhouse being prepared for use. He visited, returned her borrowed botany book, and promised further contact as her friend 332.

When Harley Quinn opened Arkham’s cellblocks, Pamela left her ward and searched for Chen Mo. After finding that his car had departed, she checked Gotham University, their greenhouse, and finally Wayne Manor. Alfred offered to let her wait, but she left before Chen Mo returned 333 334 336 337.

Forced involvement in Joker’s attack

During Gotham’s unrest, Pamela helped an injured driver out of an overturned car and supported his damaged leg with a vine until paramedics arrived. After seeing footage of Spider-Man fighting Batman, she tried calling Chen Mo and headed toward the broadcast’s location 344.

Harley intercepted her with an enhanced toxin designed to affect her altered body. Pamela blocked the initial attacks and protected an ambulance from a thrown device, but Harley sprayed her at close range. The exposure caused uncontrollable laughter and stripped away her control over the plants 344.

Harley led Pamela toward Spider-Man while vegetation spread through the streets. Flowers along the route released a laughter-inducing mist. Chen Mo confronted Pamela, recognized that she appeared to be controlled, and tried to restrain her without abandoning her 344 345 346.

Sacrifice and unresolved fate

After collapsing streets sent them into Gotham’s old tunnels, Chen Mo gradually reached Pamela through the toxin’s effects. He removed his mask, revealing that he was Spider-Man. Pamela recognized him, expressed her love, and worried that she had caused the surrounding deaths and fires 346 347.

While they attempted to escape, an alien spacecraft blasted the tunnels. Pamela shielded Chen Mo with roots and foliage, taking a subsequent blast herself. He covered her wounds with his remaining nanotech armor, but she died in his arms 347.

The collapse carried them into an underground spring containing the Dionysian Factor. After Chen Mo revived, vines lifted him from the water and carried him away from Pamela. Later, he asked Bruce to search underground for surviving plants, believing that the pool might offer a chance of her survival. No confirmed recovery is established in the provided chapters 347 348 361.

Appearance

  • Before transformation: Loose red hair and a tendency to blush conspicuously around Chen Mo 314.
  • During the experiment: Green markings spread along her skin, shoots emerged from wounds, and pale roots grew from her back into laboratory equipment 323 324.
  • As Poison Ivy: Green skin, red hair, and green eyes; leaves and trailing branches covered her body 326 331 332.
  • Concealment: Wore a hooded coat when visiting Victor Fries, partially hiding her altered skin 329.

Personality

Pamela is initially shy, easily embarrassed, and much more confident discussing plants than discussing her feelings. Chen Mo’s small acts of consideration make a strong impression on her, particularly his willingness to handle a muddy pot and listen without rushing her 314.

Her affection becomes possessive. She grows jealous of Barbara, considers ways to control Chen Mo’s feelings, and imagines arranging a shared home before asking what he wants. At the same time, she refuses to use a method she believes could hurt him 321 326.

Her transformation changes her identification with plants. She experiences them as her own kind and increasingly regards humans as a separate, intrusive species. This contributes to her violence against Woodrue and her willingness to threaten Wayne employees over deforestation 324 326 331.

Pamela remains capable of remorse, restraint, and care for strangers. She recognizes the danger of her involuntary attacks, accepts friendly contact during treatment, and later takes pride in having saved someone without killing anyone that day. Harley’s attack overturns this fragile improvement rather than beginning a voluntary alliance 324 332 344.

Abilities & Skills

Plant Control

Pamela can direct existing vegetation and accelerate its growth 323 331.

  • Uses vines to retrieve objects, climb walls, carry people, restrain targets, and strike with enough force to crack a wall 323 326 331.
  • Forms barriers and protective coverings from branches, roots, and broad leaves 344 347.
  • Extends roots through pavement and buildings, causing extensive structural damage when uncontrolled 344 346.
  • Can command plants without moving her hands; restraining her wrists alone does not make her safe 332.
  • Strong emotions and Harley’s enhanced toxin can cause plants to attack against her intentions 324 344.

Plant Perception

Pamela senses plants as extensions of herself, including their pain and remaining signs of life 323 326.

  • Detects plants throughout Woodrue’s laboratory 323.
  • Uses Gotham’s vegetation to locate Woodrue’s prison 326.
  • Recognizes life in severed roots and encourages surrounding growth to reconnect with them 326.
  • Plant injuries can overwhelm her emotionally and intensify hostility toward nearby people 324.

Pheromones and Bewitching Toxins

Pamela possesses pheromones capable of influencing behavior and perception, with research predating her transformation 321.

  • Previously controlled her stepfather, with fatal consequences 321.
  • Influences Victor Fries and compels a Wayne Tower employee to approach her 331 332.
  • Delivers a concentrated, illusion-inducing toxin through a kiss, penetrating Chen Mo’s armor defenses 331.
  • Air filtration can block her ordinary airborne exposure, and Chen Mo ultimately resists the kiss’s effects 331 332.

Altered Physiology

Woodrue’s experiment gives Pamela a body capable of producing and merging with vegetation 323 324.

  • Grows roots directly from her skin and withdraws into a larger mass of branches and leaves 323 324.
  • Survives her plunge into the river 324 326.
  • Claims a human-targeted version of the Batman Who Laughs Virus cannot control her, but proves vulnerable to Harley’s enhanced formulation 344.
  • Is fatally wounded by an alien weapon while shielding Chen Mo 347.

Botany and Research

  • Maintains greenhouse plants and detailed knowledge of their growth 314.
  • Produces research diagrams and academic work, some of which an earlier adviser stole 321 332.
  • Provides plant photographs and reference material for Chen Mo’s comics 314 317.

Relationships

  • Chen Mo / Spider-Man — Friend and unrequited love interest. His kindness inspires her attachment; she learns his secret identity only in the tunnels and dies shielding him. He explicitly describes his love for her as friendship, not romance 314 347 361.
  • Woodrue — Adviser and experimental abuser responsible for her transformation. Pamela later finds and kills him in prison 323 326.
  • Bruce Wayne / Batman — Target of her anger over woodland destruction and her suspicions about Chen Mo’s life at Wayne Manor. Batman also participates in her rescue and arranges supervised treatment 323 326 332.
  • Barbara Gordon — Chen Mo’s close friend, whose familiarity with him provokes Pamela’s jealousy. Barbara later helps coordinate Pamela’s rescue and visitation arrangements 317 321 332.
  • Peter Parker — Helps rescue Pamela from Woodrue, supports her while she remains attached to the equipment, and searches the river after her disappearance 323 324.
  • Victor Fries — Fellow university researcher whom Pamela manipulates to distract Batman from her plans against Bruce Wayne 329 332.
  • Harley Quinn — Attacks Pamela with an enhanced toxin and forces her into Joker’s operation; their cooperation is coerced 344.
  • Joker — Uses Harley to turn Pamela into part of his citywide attack. Pamela bitterly regrets not having killed him before he could destroy her progress 344 345.
