| Occupation/Role | Criminal mastermind and recurring adversary of Batman and Spider-Man 63 84 344 |
| Status | Alive; in Gordon’s custody, with his death-triggered device contained 359 |
| First Appearance | Chapter 62, “Wow, the Joker” |
Background
Joker gives contradictory accounts of his childhood. During Harleen Quinzell’s interviews, he claims that his father broke his arm, despite previously saying he grew up in an orphanage and never met his father. When challenged, he jokes that the father he invented has already beaten him; neither account establishes a reliable history 326.
Appearance
Joker has sickly white skin, messy green hair, and an exaggerated red-painted smile. His first reveal shows him removing Black Mask’s skull mask after impersonating the gang leader 62 73.
- Purple clothing: Wears a purple shirt beneath his disguise and later appears in purple coats and gloves 63 74 286.
- Theatrical accessories: Carries an extravagant cane and uses costume pieces to conceal weapons and escape devices 76 81.
- Visible injuries: Appears at the amusement park with facial bruising, a split mouth, a damaged cuff, and a slight limp 78.
Personality
Joker treats crime as theater, casting victims as performers and Batman and Spider-Man as his preferred audience. He does not merely seek casualties: he arranges suffering to support his belief that sufficient pressure can break anyone. His amusement-park performances turn poverty, humiliation, workplace exploitation, and personal grief into arguments against hope 78 80 83.
He is particularly interested in the contrast between Batman’s restraint and Spider-Man’s humor and compassion. He describes one as hiding madness in silence and the other as hiding pain in laughter, then repeatedly tries to make them abandon their principles. Spider-Man’s growing brutality delights him, but continued rescue work frustrates him because it refuses the conclusion he wants 63 335 340.
Pain and danger rarely end his performance. He continues joking while injured, restrained, or strangled, and actively invites Batman and Venom to kill him. His willingness to die also serves a trap: a concealed device is configured to discharge toward whoever kills him 83 355 356.
Abilities & Skills
Psychological Manipulation
Joker studies his opponents’ attachments and moral limits, then constructs situations intended to turn those qualities against them 63 83 355.
- Uses endangered hostages to interrupt pursuit and force heroes to prioritize rescue 63.
- Exploits Helen Morris’s suffering and photographs of the dead to provoke Spider-Man 80 82 83.
- Murders a child’s parents in a staged recreation of the Wayne murders, then broadcasts the recording to Batman 354 355.
- Encourages Harleen’s sympathy through personal attention and contradictory stories of victimization 326.
Trap Planning and Escape
His operations use prepared routes, decoys, automated mechanisms, and backup triggers rather than relying on a single confrontation 63 76 81 82.
- Escapes through hidden passages and Gotham’s drainage system 63 76.
- Uses abandoned clothing and a transforming ice cream truck as distractions 63 76.
- Turns the amusement park’s restraint post into a concealed lift and rail transport, escaping while still bound 82 83.
- Links gates, gas pipes, bombs, hostage chairs, and other park machinery to parallel triggers 84.
- Leaves an impostor in Arkham to delay discovery of his absence 73.
Chemical and Biological Attacks
Joker employs substances that force laughter, incapacitate victims, or support his control over other criminals 72 78 335.
- Laughing toxins: Cause uncontrollable laughter even while victims cry or struggle; some amusement-park victims die with their faces contorted into smiles 72 78.
- Gas delivery: Uses bombs, balloons, a cane, a lapel flower, and larger distribution systems 76 80 81 287 356.
- Batman Who Laughs Virus: Infects Calendar Man, Mad Hatter, and Alberto Falcone, then compels them to follow him 335.
- Limit: His chemical attacks can be countered; Spider-Man treats Ms. Harper with Batman’s antidote spray 81.
Broadcast Manipulation
Joker uses surveillance and public broadcasts to turn private violence into a citywide spectacle 62 286 344.
- Impersonates Black Mask over loudspeakers with a voice changer 62 63.
- Appears across Arkham’s surveillance feeds and staff terminals after his escape 286.
- Uses selected and edited footage of Spider-Man fighting Batman to provoke public arguments over their methods 344.
- Broadcasts Venom’s attacks and taunts the fleeing criminals through the Freight Yard’s speakers 350 351.
Close-Quarters Evasion
Joker can evade attacks through quick reactions, acrobatic movements, and concealed weapons, but is physically outmatched by Spider-Man 63 80 83.
- Dodges a Batarang and leaves his jacket behind to catch Spider-Man’s webbing 63.
- Interrupts combat with cuff blades, smoke, flash powder, and other costume-mounted devices 81 83.
- Injures Spider-Man with a knife after using flash powder, but cannot overpower his grip 83.
- Is repeatedly subdued when Batman and Spider-Man coordinate their attacks 81 84.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Voice changer and Black Mask disguise — Used to hijack Black Mask’s operation and narrate the heroes’ fights in his voice 62 63.
- Trick cane — Conceals a smoke-producing clown head; also sprays green smoke during combat 76 80.
- Concealed weapons — Includes cuff blades, an acid-spraying razor, a bow-tie flashbang, heel-mounted smoke, and flash powder hidden in a restraint chain 81 83.
- Comedy props — Carries a screaming rubber chicken that bursts into smiley-face confetti when knocked away 81.
- Remote controls and automated backups — Operate amusement-park traps and activate a further countdown after his capture 80 81.
- M-17 nuclear warhead — Obtained from Penguin’s stored cargo and decorated with a smiling face as a proposed welcome present for Spider-Man 284 287 288.
- Death-triggered canisters — Worn beneath his shirt, connected to a pulse monitor and outward-facing nozzles. Batman identifies the release condition, and police later enclose the assembly in a containment shell 356 359.
Relationships
- Batman — His central adversary and favorite target for moral provocation. Joker calls him “Batsy” and “darling,” frames their encounters romantically, and wants Batman to kill him 63 355 356.
- Spider-Man / Chen Mo — Becomes a second fixation after the warehouse encounter. Joker targets his compassion, delights in his anger, and claims to love his smile; Chen Mo rejects both his advances and his arguments about human nature 63 81 84 284 351.
- Harleen Quinzell / Harley Quinn — Harleen falls in love with him during their Arkham interviews. Joker later pushes her into a chemical pool, pulls her out, and names her Harley Quinn; she joins his plans against Batman and Spider-Man 326 329.
- Bruce Wayne — Dislikes Wayne’s charitable interventions. He also regards Bruce as a romantic rival in his fixation on Batman 293.
- Black Mask / Roman — A coerced collaborator and frequent victim of Joker’s schemes. Joker steals his identity, straps a bomb beneath his chair, and later pressures him into disrupting Harvey Dent’s relief work 63 340.
- Penguin / Oswald Cobblepot — Intimidates him into searching for Chen Mo’s comic-artist identity and later obtaining access to the stored M-17 warhead 88 287.
- James Gordon and Barbara Gordon — Targets Gordon’s home with the Joker Gang and later returns armed. Barbara fights him and eventually helps contain his death-triggered device 76 286 287 356 359.
- Calendar Man, Mad Hatter, and Alberto Falcone — Abducts them while injured and brings them under his control with the Batman Who Laughs Virus 335.
- Nadir — Partners with him during the nuclear-weapons plot; both are captured while discussing an attack on Jerusalem 306.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hijacking Black Mask’s Operation
Joker first reveals himself in Black Mask’s surveillance room after providing theatrical commentary on Batman and Spider-Man’s battles. He has taken Black Mask captive and impersonated him with a mask and voice changer. When the heroes attack, he sends the bomb-rigged prisoner toward them and escapes while they defuse it 62 63.
His alterations to the food crates expose the children hidden inside Black Mask’s operation. Although this helps reveal the crime, Batman identifies Joker’s purpose as putting on a show, not helping the investigation 63 64.
The Killing Joke and Amusement-Park Trap
Joker torments Helen Morris with uncontrollable laughter as the opening of the Killing Joke event. Batman subsequently discovers that the supposed Joker inside Arkham is an ordinary man wearing makeup and a green wig 72 73.
After arranging to use a derelict amusement park, Joker attacks Gordon’s house and leaves a clue pointing toward Smile Park. At the park, he assembles kidnapped performers, poisoned victims, explosives, and rigged rides into a staged demonstration of his beliefs about suffering 74 75 76 78.
Batman and Spider-Man rescue hostages and capture him, but an automated backup seals the exits and starts another countdown. A concealed lift then carries Joker into the haunted house, where he continues provoking them with projections, photographs, and trapped hostages 80 81 82 83.
Chen Mo challenges the premise of the spectacle: Joker must kidnap people, release gas, build traps, and edit footage because the world does not naturally prove his argument. The heroes shut down the system and secure him again. Gordon later describes his confinement as more reliable than Arkham’s regular wards without confirming its location 84 86.
Continued Challenges to Gotham’s Recovery
Even while confined, Joker has Penguin search for the artist behind Chen Mo’s Batman comics 88.
During the Arkham transfer investigation, he denies responsibility for the scheme but taunts Batman and Spider-Man about whether Gotham can improve. Chen Mo answers by punching him, and Batman orders him returned to custody. When Joker asks the question again after Alberto Falcone’s admission, Chen Mo points to the additional people they have saved as reason to believe the city can get better 188 189 219.
M-17 Nuclear Crisis
After Spider-Man has been absent from Gotham for a year, Joker escapes Arkham and prepares a nuclear warhead as a “welcome” gift. Gotham’s reopened banks, functioning schools, and improved access to food disturb him precisely because they suggest meaningful progress 284 286.
The warhead comes from cargo Penguin has kept in storage for years. Joker obtains its warehouse key at gunpoint, later escapes Gotham in a truck, and advertises the weapon to arms buyers before heading toward the Safar Republic 287 288.
The transaction leads toward Tahlara Palace and eventually Nadir’s plans against Jerusalem. When Batman, Chen Mo, and Peter capture them, Joker admits that he abandoned M-17 in the desert without recording its location 293 306.
Superman ultimately removes the bomb from a cargo plane. Batman transports Joker back to Gotham in a dedicated restraint compartment and locks him in Cell Seven of Arkham’s Special Detention Unit 311.
Harley Quinn and the Infected Villains
Harleen’s interviews develop into romantic attachment. Joker takes her to a chemical pool, pushes her in, and retrieves her after her skin turns white. She accepts the name Harley Quinn and joins his preparations for new “presents” for Batman and Spider-Man 326 329.
During the Arkham and Blackgate crisis, Joker exploits the heroes’ rescue work to abduct injured villains. He is especially excited to learn that Spider-Man continued beating some of them after restraining them. At a safe house, he reveals their infection with the Batman Who Laughs Virus and makes them agree to follow him 335.
Relief Sabotage and the Venom Broadcast
Joker orders Roman to undermine Harvey Dent’s relief operation by making recipients fight over supplies. Although Spider-Man’s harsher treatment of criminals initially pleases him, the sight of Spider-Man and Harvey continuing to help people angers him 340.
He later seizes a television station and broadcasts Spider-Man’s fight with Batman, emphasizing Spider-Man’s attempt to kill the surrendered Black Mask. As Venom pursues the criminals at the Freight Yard, Joker celebrates the violence and proposes names such as “The Laughing Spider” and “Joker’s Spider-Robin” 344 350 351.
To provoke Batman, Joker broadcasts his murder of a child’s parents in Crime Alley and his subsequent poisoning of the surviving child. Batman resists retaliating and continues rescuing civilians. Venom then breaks into the studio and drags Joker outside 354 355.
Joker urges Venom to kill him, but Batman intervenes and discovers the concealed death-triggered device. He restrains Joker beside a support post while the fighting continues. Afterward, Gordon takes custody of him with the canisters and trigger enclosed in a transparent containment shell; Joker remains alive and continues calling for Spider-Man 356 357 359.
