Background / History
Early Life and School
Barbara came to Gotham at eight years old. She subsequently attended boarding school, where she had little contact with the outside world. Her father’s police work influenced her understanding of justice: she remembered him convicting a financially elusive criminal by investigating his tax returns rather than his carefully maintained accounts 47 48.
When a gun appeared in Chen Mo’s classroom, Barbara pulled another child behind her and reached into her backpack while watching the weapon. Chen Mo’s practiced handling of the gun then drew her attention 41 42.
Their first major collaboration involved students being denied lunch. Barbara distracted a security guard while Chen Mo engineered a cafeteria accident, then used food-safety procedures, reporting requirements, and her father’s position to force the distribution of thirty-six remaining meals. Afterward, she recognized how carefully Chen Mo had manipulated the situation and compared his indirect methods to Batman’s 46 47.
Chen Mo’s Identity and Stay with the Gordons
During the Joker Gang’s attack on Gordon’s house, Barbara initially resisted leaving Chen Mo behind. After Spider-Man appeared and Chen Mo vanished, she questioned how the masked hero knew whom she was looking for. Batman and Gordon supplied an explanation, but Barbara continued pretending not to know the heroes’ identities 76 77.
Months later, Chen Mo explicitly told her he was Spider-Man and asked to stay with her family. Barbara helped arrange his arrival while hiding her own Batgirl equipment. Her communicator nevertheless received Batman’s instruction to report once Spider-Man reached the house 178.
Barbara also insisted that Chen Mo return to school and account for his four-month absence. By the following morning, he had seen the equipment she had concealed in her backpack 178 179.
Tea Party Investigation
Barbara joined Chen Mo and Dick in investigating the school’s mysterious Tea Party invitations and the disappearance or withdrawal of students associated with them. She photographed a list of names and stopped Chen Mo from registering the investigation through his camera, warning that doing so would alert the school, its foundation, and Wayne Enterprises 181.
Working as Batgirl, she later recovered evidence that old Arkham credentials had opened an east gate around the Mad Hatter’s disappearance. Although the logs had been wiped, residual backups preserved traces of the access. She could identify the entrance and timing, but not the person responsible, because the credential name had been backfilled 185 186.
Dick’s Family Crisis
Barbara volunteered at the Community Center with Chen Mo and Dick, organizing supplies while Dick entertained children. When Dick revealed that his parents had disappeared after suspicious activity at the circus, she helped assess his information 222.
As Batgirl, she helped secure Dick’s mother during the rescue. Afterward, she brought Dick hot cocoa, took him to Gordon’s house, and accompanied him back to the hospital. Chen Mo deliberately knocked Batgirl equipment from her backpack, exposing her identity to Dick 229 230.
Once their identities were openly acknowledged, Barbara and Chen Mo began a joint patrol. They stopped a grocery-store robbery before separating, with Barbara heading toward the docks 232.
Joker’s Attack and the Nuclear Crisis
While investigating Joker’s stolen nuclear weapon, Barbara discovered that her communications equipment had been damaged. She returned home to replace it and used a false door-lock alarm to try to draw Gordon away from potentially compromised police communications 286.
Joker arrived first, concealing a gun in a bouquet. Barbara fought him with the security chain, a Batarang, and close-range strikes, but his chemical spray disrupted her defense. She subsequently kept him occupied by discussing Chen Mo’s Batman-and-Joker comic until Batman arrived. Joker’s final shot grazed her side; she remained mobile and immediately helped treat a gas-exposed neighbor 287 288.
Despite the injury, Barbara resumed tracking Joker’s arms-dealing channel. She uncovered footage of Chen Mo rescuing a child at Darukh Second School, supplied Batman with its coordinates, and asked him to bring Chen Mo home. Her later analysis helped uncover a plot to bomb Gotham, frame Russia, and provoke war between Russia and the United States 289 309.
Gotham’s Coordinated Attacks and Venom
Barbara traced stolen equipment to a building suspected of housing a citywide poison-gas dispersal system. Later, while monitoring Gotham with Chen Mo, she identified abnormal vines near Wayne Tower and tried unsuccessfully to stop him from leaving before backup arrived 322 330.
During Joker’s coordinated attacks, she handled emergency communications and redirected Robin toward officers requesting help against Scarecrow. She subsequently handed the control systems to Alfred and joined Peter, Dick, and Jason in the effort to retrieve Chen Mo from Venom 345 352.
At the Freight Yard, Barbara helped rescue web-cocooned captives and used a portable sonic device to interrupt Venom’s attack on Peter. She later disarmed Harley Quinn, seized her remote, and switched off a misting unit 353 356.
After Chen Mo’s hospitalization, Barbara visited him with a dressing on her hand and visible signs of exhaustion. She later returned to the underground base’s control console and helped assemble camera footage, nautical charts, and route data for an operation against an enemy vessel 360 365.
Appearance
Barbara has red hair and is described as not particularly tall during her confrontation with the cafeteria staff 47.
- Civilian clothing: Wears a school uniform and carries a backpack, which she also uses to conceal vigilante equipment 183 230.
- Batgirl equipment: Includes a cowl, cape, utility belt, bracers, and purple-and-black gloves 178 230 286.
- Signs of overwork: Frequently shows tiredness or dark circles after nighttime activity 192 360.
Personality
Barbara cultivates the image of a cold, composed “cool girl,” though Chen Mo’s humor repeatedly makes her laugh despite herself. She answers his jokes with dry insults and mock-official language, once describing an impending outburst as “necessary preventive control” of a desk 46 50.
Her desire to help others is grounded in admiration for her father. She is willing to act boldly, but also warns Chen Mo against interventions that would leave vulnerable students suffering the consequences. In the cafeteria, she combines that concern with a practical understanding of procedures and institutional pressure 46 47.
Barbara’s care is often understated. She sits beside Dick without questioning what he writes on his ticket, brings him cocoa after his parents’ rescue, and challenges Chen Mo when his own condition makes an impulsive rescue attempt dangerous 229 230 330.
Abilities & Skills
Investigation and Procedural Knowledge
Barbara can exploit regulations, identify suspicious records, and organize investigations without immediately exposing them to institutional oversight 47 181 186.
- Administrative leverage: Uses food-safety rules and demands for written accountability to secure meals for hungry students 47.
- Evidence recovery: Finds residual access records after Arkham’s primary logs have been erased 186.
- Operational discretion: Checks surveillance and nearby officers before changing identities 183.
Hacking and Technical Analysis
Barbara operates the Batcomputer, traces communications, and combines surveillance, financial, aviation, and weapons-trafficking records 289 309.
- Arms-channel intrusion: Retrieves Joker’s buyer conversations and follows associated video references to footage from Darukh 289.
- Signal analysis: Compares electromagnetic signatures to identify Chen Mo’s advanced suit transmissions 292.
- Communication interception: Copies a voice stream through an existing Gotham-side bridge when Batman requests access 297.
- Limits: Cannot penetrate Stark suit authentication or control the suits. Their changing keys defeat repeated attempts, and later cooperation requires explicitly granted, read-only access 292 297 308.
Combat and Mobility
Barbara combines grapnel-assisted movement, baton strikes, Batarangs, and close-quarters restraint 230 232 287.
- Disarming: Uses a grappling line to redirect a gunman’s weapon, then strikes behind his knee with a baton 232.
- Restraint: Trips a fleeing robber with her line and subdues Harley by controlling her wrist and elbow 284 356.
- Improvisation: Traps Joker’s wrist with a household security chain during his attack 287.
- Vulnerabilities: Joker’s chemical spray irritates her eyes despite her holding her breath; her portable sonic device only briefly repels Venom 287 353.
Coordination and Rescue
Barbara alternates between field operations and support from the control console 345 352.
- Assigns locations and relays police requests during simultaneous emergencies 345.
- Helps evacuate captives and guides injured teammates through an escape passage 353.
- Assists gas-exposed civilians after Joker’s escape 288.
Psychology and Art
- Psychology: Studies some child psychology during Batgirl training and draws on that knowledge while keeping Joker engaged in conversation 288.
- Comic collaboration: Helps Chen Mo develop and draw Gotham Phantom, including romantic stories about Bruce Wayne and Batman 311 320.
