Background / History

War Service and Hokage Prospects

Minato studied under Jiraiya and distinguished himself during the Third Shinobi World War. After the war, he led returning shinobi into Konoha and received Hiruzen Sarutobi’s praise. He later represented the war participants at a high-level meeting, speaking about their hardships and the Will of Fire 23 25 26.

In the original course of events remembered by Shengyi, Minato became Fourth Hokage after Hiruzen’s resignation. He and Kushina subsequently died resealing the Nine-Tails, leaving their son, Naruto Uzumaki. These are remembered original events, not established outcomes in the altered timeline: Shengyi’s interference united Konoha’s leadership and made Hiruzen’s resignation—and therefore Minato’s appointment—uncertain 8 29.

Dispute over Obito’s Sharingan

When Shengyi demanded the return of Obito’s Sharingan from Kakashi, Minato appealed to him as the students’ teacher. He bowed deeply and asked that the eye remain with Kakashi as a memorial to Obito and their friendship. Shengyi refused, citing the Uchiha Clan’s restrictions on allowing outsiders to possess its bloodline ability 26.

Minato tried to restrain Kakashi’s angry response and objected when Shengyi demanded the Hatake Clan’s swordsmanship and Sakumo’s training insights as stakes for a duel. Before the fight, he urged Kakashi to prioritize his safety. After Shengyi’s immediate victory, Minato examined Kakashi and surrendered the promised documents 27 28 29.

Minato later visited the demoralized Kakashi at home. Rather than treating the loss of the Sharingan as the end of his career, he encouraged Kakashi to develop his own potential and reconsider his family’s swordsmanship. Kakashi regained his resolve and decided to find his own path 29.

Cooperation over the Nine-Tails

Shengyi subsequently requested a meeting with Minato and Kushina. Suspecting that Kushina’s position as the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki was the real reason, Minato arranged to meet him alone. When Shengyi bluntly announced that he wanted the Nine-Tails, Minato attacked, believing Kushina’s life was threatened 30 31.

His blows failed against Shengyi’s chakra armor. Once Shengyi revealed his Mangekyō Sharingan and deliberately refrained from retaliating, Minato recognized that the confrontation had been staged to demonstrate his strength. He resumed negotiations, concluding that Shengyi did not intend to attack him 32.

Shengyi claimed he could prevent the fatal loss of life force following tailed-beast extraction and warned that Kushina’s seal would weaken during childbirth. Minato returned home to verify the danger with Kushina before agreeing to cooperate. His conditions were that Shengyi explain the plan and promise never to use the Nine-Tails to threaten Konoha 33.

Shengyi gave that promise and disclosed the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan as the source of Madara’s power. In return, Minato shared Tobirama’s observations that Madara’s eye pattern had changed after Izuna’s death 34.

The proposed operation assigned Kushina’s care to Mikoto, the Nine-Tails to Shengyi, and security to Minato. Although troubled by the untested rescue method and its resurrection fallback, Minato accepted and left Shengyi a Flying Thunder God kunai for emergencies. He then resolved to strengthen himself before the birth 35 36.

Personality

Minato is gentle and emotionally invested in his students. His defense of Kakashi’s Sharingan rests on its meaning as Obito’s gift, rather than its combat value. After Kakashi’s defeat, he offers practical encouragement without dismissing the pain of losing it 26 29.

His affection for Kushina makes him attentive to her health but also capable of sudden violence when he believes she is threatened. He nevertheless regains his composure, checks important claims with her, and questions Shengyi about the medical, political, and security risks of his proposal 31 32 33 34.

Minato also remains committed to Konoha’s safety. Even when offered a way to free Kushina from being a jinchūriki, he insists that the Nine-Tails must not become a threat to the village 33 34.
