History
Warring States Era and Konoha’s Founding
Before Madara’s era, the clan exploited Uchiha Hikari’s Yachihoko ocular technique by raising her as a weapon. It renamed her Nanashi, deployed her in battle, and confined her to a dungeon to gather chakra between campaigns. Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi were implanted to increase her combat power. The Senju and Uzumaki eventually sealed her away, leaving her hostile toward both her enemies and her own clan 49.
The Uchiha and Senju later became the two clans that founded Konoha. Both established their compounds in the village center. Madara was remembered as a former Uchiha leader whose Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan represented a level of power the later elders hoped to restore 24 45.
Fugaku’s Leadership and Seiichi’s Research
Fugaku had recently become clan head when Seiichi was born in Konoha Year 38. Seiichi’s unusually early Sharingan development reduced infighting between the clan’s factions 2 3.
After studying ancestral records, Seiichi identified defects in the Uchiha bloodline and spent a year collecting blood from the entire clan. Different members lacked different genetic components, allowing him to assemble a complete bloodline serum. He initially concealed the discovery while developing profitable foods and medicines to improve the clan’s finances and support poorer members 4 6.
Third Shinobi World War
Konoha required the Uchiha to deploy 1,000 ninja, including 500 jōnin. Fugaku accepted the quota because it applied to the village’s clans generally, despite the strain it placed on police staffing. Elite jōnin Uchiha Yunhai, deputy chief of the Military Police Force, volunteered to command the contingent 7.
The Uchiha suffered heavily while taking on difficult opponents. During the war, the elders approved equal allowances for the families of all deployed fighters and temporarily withheld the death list. Only 626 of the original 1,000 combatants returned alive 9 23.
Break with the Hokage Faction
A dispute over a captured Kumogakure operative escalated when Root attempted to override the Military Police Force. Seiichi asserted the police’s jurisdiction, and Uchiha officers killed the Root operatives after they attacked. Fugaku publicly supported Seiichi’s authority as young clan leader and police adviser 14 15.
Seiichi subsequently forced Hiruzen Sarutobi to disband Root. Hiruzen, Danzo, Mitokado Homura, and Utatane Koharu then unanimously agreed that the Uchiha should be eradicated. The clan responded by recalling its ninja and concentrating resources on training 17 19.
After the war, Seiichi also demanded the return of Obito’s Sharingan from Kakashi. Kakashi challenged him to a duel and lost, allowing the Uchiha to recover the eye. Seiichi additionally obtained the Hatake family’s swordsmanship and Sakumo’s training notes under the wager 26 27 29.
Merchant Reorganization
Seiichi abandoned plans for an armed confrontation because it could cost Uchiha lives. His later public display of Perfect Susanoo convinced the Hokage faction to cancel its planned provocation and suppression of the clan 30 38 39.
Fugaku and Seiichi formally relinquished the Military Police Force and announced the clan’s transition into commerce. More than ten thousand Uchiha completed shinobi deregistration within one week, with the village leadership’s support. The clan remained in Konoha and requested peaceful coexistence rather than control of the village 39 40.
Withdrawal from village service did not mean disarmament. Seiichi established ten internal divisions, and public selection trials demonstrated their strength to paying spectators. Reports of the Uchiha’s Susanoo users forced the major villages to reassess their relationships with the clan 40 41.
Rediscovery of Hikari
An old record found by Uchiha Setsuna led Seiichi to a mountain chamber containing a sealed Mangekyō wielder. After freeing and subduing Hikari, he learned how the ancient clan had abused her. He later invited her to return to the modern Uchiha, promising a normal life free from coercion 45 47 49 50.

| Genin | 3,756 7 |
| Chūnin | 5,789 7 |
| Jōnin | 1,694 7 |
Most Uchiha ninja served in the Military Police Force. Its patrol and shift requirements ordinarily limited the number available for large battlefield deployments 7 17.
Third War Deployment and Losses
| Rank | Initial Deployment | Midwar Survivors | Returned Alive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jōnin | 500 9 | 469 9 | 450 23 |
| Chūnin | 350 9 | 199 9 | 157 23 |

| Total | 1,000 9 | 712 9 | 626 23 |
- Uchiha Rinka, Yunhai’s deputy, was the highest-ranking death identified in the midwar report 9.
- Virtually all returning fighters were injured; more than thirty were seriously wounded, and nearly ten were disabled 23.
Abilities & Skills
Sharingan and Bloodline Restoration
The Sharingan is the clan’s hereditary ocular ability. Seiichi initially traced its progression through one, two, and three tomoe to Mangekyō, Eternal Mangekyō, and the Rinnegan 2.
- Ordinary awakening: Associated with intense emotional stimulation; Mangekyō awakening requires a more extreme stimulus 2.
- Traditional drawback: Excessive Mangekyō use can cause blindness 2.
- Bloodline repair: Seiichi’s serum combines genetic components distributed across the clan’s members 4.
- Expected benefit: Seiichi predicted that a complete bloodline would allow natural Sharingan awakening and at least three tomoe by adulthood. This was a projected clan-wide outcome, not an already completed transformation 6.
- Nutritional cost: Seiichi’s first restoration consumed seventeen boxes of concentrated nutrient solution, making safe provision for ordinary members a major concern 5.
Seiichi later revised his classification: Eternal Mangekyō is the endpoint of the Uchiha bloodline itself. He regarded the Rinnegan as an atavistic result of combining the Sharingan and Sage Body bloodlines, rather than a further Uchiha-only evolution 34.
Individual Mangekyō Techniques
These abilities belong to particular wielders rather than every clan member.
| Wielder | Techniques | Applications / Limits |
|---|---|---|
| Seiichi | Wisdom Ruler; Space Ruler | Mental acceleration, analysis, parallel and simulated calculation, removal of casting preliminaries, and control over spatial energy 12. |
| Fugaku | Future Sight; Heart-Questioning Genjutsu | The latter reveals a target’s true desires; Fugaku cannot dictate its conclusion 19. |
| Mikoto | Two-Faced Shield | Front Shield defends against ninjutsu and reflects some power. Reverse Shield heals by rejecting negative states 20. |
| Shisui | Kotoamatsukami | Left eye permanently rewrites will with a seven-year cooldown; right eye temporarily rewrites will for one hour to one month. Neither requires eye contact, and Shisui states that distance is irrelevant 40. |
| Hikari | Yachihoko; implanted Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi | Marks enable memory erasure, control, and chakra absorption. Her enhanced Tsukuyomi can mark groups, while her black flames can change shape 49. |
- Seiichi proposed that Mikoto’s Reverse Shield might counter blindness, disability, or aging. Resurrection remained speculative and was expected to demand an enormous price 20.
- Itachi had a Three-Tomoe Sharingan and expressed preferences for powerful genjutsu and Fire Release; he had not yet demonstrated a Mangekyō awakening in the supplied events 20 40.
Susanoo
Susanoo is the Uchiha’s legendary “power of a god,” documented as having five stages 38.
- Perfect Susanoo: Distinguished by a complete humanoid body, full tengu armor, and wings 38.
- Seiichi’s manifestation: Approximately 300 meters tall, with Shusui Parting Clouds, throwable tomoe, and the capacity to form a Tailed Beast Bomb 22 23.
- Strategic role: Its public appearance ended the Hokage faction’s immediate suppression plan; three differently colored Susanoo later secured uncontested victories in the division trials 39 41.
Combat Specialties
- Fire Release: Identified as a clan specialty; police members combined Dragon Fire Techniques to overwhelm Root’s Water Formation Wall 14 40.
- Throwing weapons: A traditional Uchiha specialty, demonstrated by Fugaku’s elaborate Susanoo dart throws 22.
- Shadow Clones: Used to continue police work while members’ real bodies trained 19.
- Craftsmanship: Uchiha artisans produced lightweight, protective alloy armor for the divisions 41.
Commerce and Welfare
Businesses
- Nutrient solution: Sold in concentrated 10-milliliter shinobi vials and 500-milliliter civilian bottles, with multiple flavors. Its success restored and expanded Fugaku’s finances 5.
- Foods and medicines: Seiichi’s products generated clan income and helped poorer members, including elderly people without family support 6.
- Chef Training School: Opened beside the compound to sell instruction in formerly exclusive culinary techniques 36.
- Sauces and seasoning: Manufactured inside the compound. Even skilled cooks could reproduce only part of the dishes’ flavor without these products 36.
- Selection-match tickets: Public division trials doubled as paid entertainment and a military demonstration 41.
Veteran and Family Support
| Recipient / Condition | Benefit Announced After the War |
|---|---|
| Minor injuries | Three times the original allowance 24 |
| Serious injuries | Six times the original allowance 24 |
| Disability | Ten times the original allowance 24 |
| Fallen members’ families | Ten times the original bereavement payment 24 |
| Children of fallen members | Clan-funded upbringing until age fifteen 24 |
| Family members over fifty | Support in old age 24 |
- Seiichi threatened anyone who stole these funds with removal of the Uchiha name and execution 24.
- Gangmu later raised concerns about the clan’s finances, prompting the revised culinary business model 24 36.
Equipment and Insignia
- Division combat armor: Black, full-body alloy armor with reinforced joints, shoulder plates, breastplate, arm guards, leg guards, and knee guards 41.
- Equipment mounts: Located on the back, waist, and thighs for swords, kunai, explosive tags, and other supplies 41.
- Identification: Fan emblem on the left breast, individual division ranking on the right breast, and division number on the back; separate boots preserve mobility 41.
- Ninjutsu archive: B-rank and lower techniques were opened to clan members during the training mobilization 19.
- Hatake records: Seiichi acquired the complete Hatake Style Swordsmanship and Sakumo’s training notes after defeating Kakashi 29.
