Power Progression
Hashirama’s development is shown through stronger techniques and improved control rather than named cultivation realms.
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Established Wood Release master | 34 | A speculative intelligence assessment credits him with enormous chakra reserves, strong regeneration, and top-tier taijutsu. |
| Senjutsu demonstrated | 36 | During Ryuto’s limit trial, he manifests facial markings and senjutsu chakra; nearby damaged trees begin regenerating visibly. This is a demonstration, not a documented first acquisition. |
| True Several Thousand Hands demonstrated | 51 | Creates a colossal Wood Buddha with over a thousand arms. Its sustained bombardment damages Madara and Izuna’s combined defense, but rapidly exhausts his senjutsu chakra. |
| Increased strength against Perfect Susanoo | 67 | Battles Madara while simultaneously restraining tailed beasts and countering their attacks. Madara explicitly acknowledges that Hashirama has become stronger. |
| Improved Wood Release scale and precision | 71 | Creates a forest in the desert to crush attacking ninja beasts. Madara observes that his Wood Release has improved since their previous valley encounter. |
Appearance
Hashirama has black hair and initially wears red armor with a sword at his waist. At the Senju camp, he wears no helmet, leaves his hair loose, and greets Ryuto with a natural, welcoming smile 30 31.
- Travel clothing: Simple dark combat clothes beneath a vest bearing the Senju crest, with a small pack 66.
- Senjutsu markings: Colored markings appear around his eyes, accompanied by a distinctive forehead pattern 36 56.
Personality
Hashirama judges people primarily by how they use their strength. Ryuto’s willingness to protect the weak matters more to him than unexplained origins or an unfamiliar energy system. He stops Tobirama from forcing answers out of Ryuto and favors cooperation over attempts to reproduce his power 31 34.
His pursuit of peace is idealistic but backed by practical measures: military strength, alliances, shared resources, representative management, and rules against private bloodshed. He accepts that force may be necessary to bring opponents to negotiations, but distinguishes protecting people from conquering them 32 40 43.
His affection for Madara survives their warfare. He trusts Madara to honor a private meeting, repeatedly offers cooperation, and risks his own life force to save him. His humor can also be badly timed: discoveries about their common ancestry and reincarnations make him laugh even during grave discussions, prompting reprimands from Tobirama 43 60 83 87.
Abilities & Skills
Wood Release
Hashirama uses his Wood Release kekkei genkai for battlefield control, direct attacks, restraint, and defense 34 45.
| Technique / Application | Capabilities and Limits |
|---|---|
| Deep Forest Emergence | Rapidly fills large areas with trees, branches, and vines. He seals Ryuto’s overhead escape route, pressures Madara across half a canyon, and captures enemy ninja 36 50 72. |
| Wood Dragon Technique | Creates enormous dragons for impact attacks and restraint. A dragon halts the Nine-Tails’ charge and binds it; later, several dragons pulverize falling rocks 67 102. |
| Giant wooden figure | Serves as a fighting platform and physical combatant. Its fists smash apart Madara’s fire dragons and a flaming whirlwind 50. |
| Wood Locking Wall | Shields Hashirama from Ryuto’s Kamehameha and later protects five people from the Hagoromo Clan’s combined Wind-Fire Thunderstorm 36 72. |
| Thorn Kill Technique | Precisely binds the wrist of the transformed Ryuto as Hashirama attempts to stop him from attacking Izuna 55. |
| Hōbi Technique | Creates a huge, demonic-faced shield around Izuna. It withstands Ryuto’s energy attack for several seconds before breaking, allowing Madara to rescue him 55. |
| Ground anchoring | Roots Hashirama to the ground against Tenshu’s attraction and repulsion 81. |
- Chakra absorption: His wood absorbs tailed-beast chakra, weakening beasts caught in its restraints 67.
- Preparation time: Large-scale techniques require time to form hand seals 45.
- Environmental advantage: Hashirama states that the canyon’s moisture gives Wood Release a slight boost 45.
- Countermeasures: Byakugan-equipped puppets read attack trajectories and chakra nodes, reducing his restraints’ effectiveness. Tenshu’s gravitational abilities also deflect or pin his vines 80 81.
Wood Clone Technique
Hashirama’s wood clones support combat, protection, and reconnaissance.
- Three clones coordinate with his original body to overwhelm Ryuto in close combat. Ryuto senses energy within them almost as strong as the original’s, and two clones counter his full-power Ki Blasts with Wood Dragons 36.
- Four clones engage pursuing Hyūga ninja while Hashirama carries the exhausted Ryuto away; one sacrifices itself to block a Vacuum Palm 52.
- Clones deployed across five battlefronts share their vision with him at central command 89 90.
Senjutsu and True Several Thousand Hands
Hashirama produces senjutsu chakra by sensing natural energy and combining it with his own chakra. He explains that others with sufficient talent can learn this through special training, though it is extremely difficult 61.
- True Several Thousand Hands: Raises an enormous Wood Buddha with over a thousand arms, each capable of delivering senjutsu-enhanced blows 51.
- Mass bombardment: Repeated strikes crack Madara and Izuna’s combined Susanoo defense and force it onto one knee 51.
- Simultaneous defense: While fighting Perfect Susanoo, additional hands deflect a Tailed Beast Bomb and extinguish the Two-Tails’ flames 67.
- Heavy consumption: Extended use leaves him pale, sweating, and trembling. His sage markings disappear and the barrage slows as he approaches exhaustion 51.
Healing and Symbiosis
Hashirama possesses strong personal regeneration and can treat others with medical ninjutsu 34 56.
- Sage Art: Healing Resuscitation Regeneration Technique: Channels dense green medical chakra into Rena’s chest wound. He recognizes that Ryuto’s ki has already sealed damaged tissue and reduced blood loss, making treatment possible 56.
- Symbiosis Technique: Shares his life force and cells with Madara after a Truth-Seeking Orb erases part of Madara’s chest. Tobirama warns that the procedure is dangerous even for Hashirama 83.
- Ordinary healing limit: His initial medical treatment cannot replace Madara’s erased tissue quickly enough to prevent death, necessitating Symbiosis 83.
- Unintended consequence: The transferred cells supply the “sage body” component Madara uses to awaken the Rinnegan 101.
Genjutsu: Bringer-of-Darkness Technique
Hashirama deprives everyone in an underground hall of vision, neutralizing the Byakugan-equipped puppets’ visual advantage 81.
- The puppets freeze and lose coordination.
- Ryuto remains able to act through Ki Sense, allowing him to exploit the opening 81.
Taijutsu and Battlefield Leadership
- Close combat: His speed, strength, and coordination with his clones completely overwhelm Ryuto during their controlled trial 36.
- Tactical planning: Designs a partnership in which he controls and defends the battlefield while Ryuto exploits openings with speed and burst attacks 45 46.
- Training: Gives Ryuto technique scrolls and arranges instruction in teamwork, tactical drills, and battlefield survival 37 38.
- Command: Directs the Allied Shinobi Forces using shared clone vision and reports recorded by sensory ninja 89 90.
Equipment
- Red armor — Worn during his first appearance and while caring for Ryuto at camp 30 31.
- Sword — Carried at his waist when he arrives at the battlefield 30.
- Senju-crested combat vest and travel pack — Worn for his departure with Ryuto 66.
- Maps and messenger hawks — Used to plan alliances, coordinate meetings, and contact Madara 42 45 69.
History
Childhood and the Senju–Uchiha War
Hashirama and Madara were close friends as children. They met beside a secluded river to compete at stone skipping; Madara also remembers hiding in Wilderness Valley to recover after losing childhood fights against him. By adulthood, they lead opposing sides in the long-running Senju–Uchiha conflict 43 69.
As Senju leader, Hashirama seeks an alternative to hereditary warfare. His early village proposal calls for participating clans to send representatives, earn their livelihood through missions, settle disputes internally, and prohibit private bloodshed 31 32.
Rescuing and Recruiting Ryuto
Hashirama first appears with roughly a dozen Senju ninja in response to an Uzumaki request for aid. He interrupts Madara’s attempt to kill the exhausted Ryuto and declares him under his protection. After Ryuto loses consciousness, Hashirama brings him to camp for treatment 30 31.
He offers Ryuto a place alongside the Senju without demanding disclosure of his secrets. Following discussions with Tobirama, he supports an exchange of combat knowledge and intelligence rather than attempts to copy Ryuto’s incompatible energy system 31 34.
Hashirama later conducts a dangerous trial intended to test Ryuto’s growth after near-death recovery. Ryuto subsequently agrees to work with him toward peace, explicitly as an independent partner rather than a Senju clan ninja 36.
Alliance Building and the Canyon Showdown
Hashirama expands cooperation with neighboring clans. After eleven months, Tobirama reports that the Nara, Yamanaka, and Akimichi have integrated into Senju supply and defense systems, while the Sarutobi have contributed effectively in battle. Despite the Senju’s growing advantage, Hashirama resists an all-out offensive against the Uchiha 42 43.
He meets Madara alone at their childhood river and proposes a genuine alliance based on shared resources, protected areas, and common rules. Madara burns the proposal and rejects his approach. Hashirama then accepts Ryuto’s alternative: let the strongest fighters settle the conflict without exposing entire armies to a decisive battle 43 44.
In the resulting canyon battle, Hashirama pressures Madara with successive Wood Release techniques before deploying True Several Thousand Hands. Ryuto’s intervention breaks the opposing defense, leaving Izuna unconscious and Madara unable to continue. Hashirama declares their victory, but outside forces abruptly attack the canyon 49 50 51 52.
From Clan Enemies to Temporary Allies
During the ensuing chaos, Hashirama protects the exhausted Ryuto. Later, he stops the transformed Ryuto from killing Izuna, arguing that Izuna’s suspicious collapse suggests outside control and that saving Rena must take priority. He treats Rena and brings Izuna back with the survivors 52 55 56 57.
Research into ancient Senju, Uchiha, and Uzumaki records suggests a shared origin and a hidden enemy targeting their bloodlines. Hashirama persuades Madara to suspend their grievances for a limited investigation, assigning Tobirama and Izuna to coordinate information 59 60.
Their later battle among the tailed beasts doubles as an attempt to expose lurking interference. After Hagoromo ninja steal the beasts, Hashirama and Madara again agree to cooperate against whoever is spreading information and provoking conflict 66 67 68.
The Moon and Asura’s Reincarnation
Hashirama joins Ryuto, Tobirama, Madara, and Izuna on the expedition prompted by rumors of the Sage of Six Paths’ ruins. On the moon, he rejects the branch family’s proposed “purification” of the Shinobi World, insisting that its inhabitants must decide their own future 69 76.
When Tenshu gravely wounds Madara, Hashirama uses Symbiosis to save him. Madara later admits that he deliberately accepted the injury because he expected Hashirama to transfer his cells; those cells subsequently enable his Rinnegan awakening 83 85 101.
Black Zetsu identifies Hashirama as Asura’s reincarnation and Madara as Indra’s, revealing that he has manipulated their predecessors’ conflicts for over a thousand years. When Kaguya prepares to leave and replant the God Tree, Hashirama confronts her over the lives it would cost 87.
Allied Command and the Peace Proposal
The gathered clan leaders overwhelmingly support Hashirama as commander against Kaguya. He accepts command of the Allied Shinobi Forces and oversees five fronts through his wood clones 88 89 90.
Kaguya overwhelms the assembled leading fighters, leaving Hashirama unable to move with injured internal organs. Tobirama intervenes as she prepares to kill him. Later, Hashirama destroys falling debris with Wood Dragons and unsuccessfully tries to dissuade Ryuto from challenging the newly empowered Madara 90 102.
After the battles against Kaguya and Madara, Hashirama proposes a Shinobi Alliance to end internal wars. The council immediately disputes authority, resources, and territory. Izuna nevertheless identifies Hashirama as a suitable leader, citing his strength and kindness—including his insistence on protecting Madara despite Madara’s crimes 109.
Relationships
- Ryuto — Rescued ally and independent partner in Hashirama’s peace project. Hashirama provides training and intelligence while trusting Ryuto’s protective instincts; Ryuto later distinguishes his own pursuit of strength from Hashirama’s pursuit of peace 31 34 36 102.
- Tobirama Senju — Younger brother and key adviser. His caution and military pragmatism frequently clash with Hashirama’s trust, but he supports Hashirama’s plans and protects him during dangerous treatment and battle 31 43 83 90.
- Madara Uchiha — Childhood friend, wartime rival, and intermittent ally. Their disagreement centers on negotiated cooperation versus order imposed through absolute power. Hashirama continues treating him as a friend, even saving him through Symbiosis 43 60 83 85.
- Izuna Uchiha — Former enemy whom Hashirama protects and brings into cooperation with Tobirama. Izuna later supports Hashirama’s suitability for leadership 55 57 60 109.
- Mito Uzumaki — Uzumaki collaborator in the ancient-record investigation and cooperation arrangements. She sits beside Hashirama at the postwar council 59 60 109.
- Black Zetsu — Hidden manipulator of the conflict between Asura’s and Indra’s reincarnations. Hashirama confronts him directly when his identity and purpose are revealed 42 87.
- Ōtsutsuki Kaguya — Enemy whose plan to restore the God Tree threatens the Shinobi World; Hashirama leads the allied resistance against her 87 88 90.
