Background
Family and Engagement
Jiang Shu grew up in the wealthy Jiang Family and was childhood friends with Sheng Nian. After Jiang Shu differentiated into an Alpha and Sheng Nian into an Omega, their families arranged an engagement when both reached adulthood. The arrangement rested on their childhood bond, comparable family backgrounds, and highly compatible pheromones 1.
The Jiang and Sheng families also maintained longstanding business partnerships. Although Jiang Shu repeatedly sought to end the engagement in the name of freedom in love and marriage, his family continued raising the marriage alliance while pursuing cooperation with the Sheng Family 105 127.
Jiang Shu resented his older brother receiving the family’s praise and control of the Jiang Group. He viewed his own intended marriage as being reduced to a tool for an alliance rather than receiving the recognition he believed he deserved 137.
Role in the Original Novel
In the original plot shown to Sheng Nian, Jiang Shu was one of the two male leads. He met He Gu at Sheng Nian’s nineteenth birthday banquet, beginning a romantic entanglement in which Sheng Nian became the villain opposing their relationship. Jiang Shu and He Gu eventually became a widely celebrated entertainment-industry couple 1.
That original storyline ended with Jiang Shu exploiting Sheng Nian’s trust to engineer a casting-couch scandal. He also used business secrets stolen from Sheng Nian to bring down the Sheng Family. The resulting bankruptcy led to the deaths of Sheng Nian’s parents, his brother’s imprisonment, and Sheng Nian’s suicide. These events belong to the original plot, rather than the altered course of Sheng Nian’s self-rescue 1.
Personality
Jiang Shu’s public image is that of a gentle, clean-cut “nation’s boyfriend.” Privately, he is accustomed to being accommodated: he was pampered from childhood and has little experience comforting others. His attempts to console He Gu can sound dismissive even when he intends to reassure him 31 128.
He routinely treats Sheng Nian’s affection as leverage, demanding apologies and threatening to stop speaking to him when he refuses to yield. Although he occasionally recognizes his mistakes and apologizes, he repeatedly returns to assuming that Sheng Nian is spoiled, unreasonable, or merely trying to attract his attention 6 37 78 84.
His possessiveness becomes increasingly apparent as Sheng Nian grows closer to Yan Feizhuo. Jiang Shu initially dislikes being pursued but is unhappy when Sheng Nian chooses someone else. After their engagement ends, he interprets rejection as temporary anger, blames He Gu for their estrangement, and insists that their history entitles him to another chance. His refusal to accept Sheng Nian’s autonomy ultimately escalates into an attempted forced marking 9 102 115 122 137.
Abilities & Skills
Alpha Pheromones
- Jiang Shu’s pheromones are highly compatible with Sheng Nian’s; that compatibility was one reason their families arranged the engagement 1.
- His pheromone scent is associated with briny seawater 137.
- He deliberately releases concentrated pheromones to weaken Sheng Nian and trigger his heat during the assault attempt 137.
Marking
- Jiang Shu gives He Gu a temporary marking, later claiming that he did so only to help him and that nothing else happened 108.
- He attempts to impose a permanent mark on Sheng Nian, but Yan Feizhuo intervenes before he succeeds 137.
In-Game Mecha Piloting
- During the game arc, Jiang Shu pilots an SSS-class mecha alongside He Gu and Ye Heng 75.
- He and He Gu engage Tang Jiang’s Zerg Queen at close range, then use their mechas’ arm movements and recoil to retreat from her counterattack. This equipment rank is documented within the game, not as Jiang Shu’s personal Alpha rank 75.
Relationships
- Sheng Nian — Childhood friend and former fiancé. Jiang Shu takes his devotion for granted, repeatedly sides against him, and later pursues reconciliation after Sheng Nian ends their engagement. His pursuit culminates in an attempted assault and forced permanent marking 1 105 122 137.
- He Gu — Romantic interest and frequent dating-show partner. Jiang Shu repeatedly defends him and gives him a temporary marking, but later blames He Gu’s manipulation for the collapse of his relationship with Sheng Nian 9 36 108 137.
- Yan Feizhuo — Romantic rival and Sheng Nian’s eventual boyfriend. Jiang Shu warns Sheng Nian against him, while Yan challenges Jiang Shu’s treatment of Sheng Nian and ultimately stops his assault 50 85 106 137.
- Jiang Jin — Older brother, whom Sheng Yi confronts over Jiang Shu’s behavior. Jiang Jin later recommends that the family stop trying to suppress Jiang Shu’s scandal 105 129.
- Madam Jiang — Mother. Jiang Shu asks her to persuade the Sheng Family to restore the engagement; she tentatively agrees but warns him not to keep pestering Sheng Nian if the attempt fails 127.
- Jiang Shu’s father — Condemns his conduct after learning the extent of the scandal. He supports withdrawing public-relations assistance and plans to remove Jiang Shu from entertainment once the controversy subsides 129.
- Tang Jiang — Fellow guest who challenges his behavior. She pressures him to apologize after a false accusation and later prevents him from following Sheng Nian after another rejection 37 125.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Hospital Misunderstanding and Partner Selection
Jiang Shu initially accuses Sheng Nian of pretending to faint to frame He Gu and insists that he apologize. After realizing the fainting was genuine, he acknowledges the misunderstanding and later apologizes during the guests’ ride to the studio 1 2 6.
On Heart-Throbbing Observation Diary, he expects Sheng Nian to choose him despite not wanting to be pestered. Sheng Nian instead selects Yan Feizhuo, leaving Jiang Shu visibly displeased. Jiang Shu pairs with He Gu, while Sheng Nian maintains an outwardly lovesick persona to satisfy the system’s restrictions 7 9.
Repeated Conflicts on the Show
Jiang Shu’s treatment of Sheng Nian becomes increasingly visible through the livestream. He sometimes questions He Gu’s behavior—telling him to apologize for examining Sheng Nian and Yan Feizhuo’s photographs—but continues to defend him in later disputes 21 26 30.
| Incident | Jiang Shu’s involvement |
|---|---|
| Sea Demon Tunnel accusation | Assumes Sheng Nian pushed He Gu and demands an apology. After the accusation is challenged, Yan Feizhuo and Tang Jiang press Jiang Shu to apologize for his mistake 36 37. |
| Two-person rafting dispute | Objects to Sheng Nian sharing a raft with Yan Feizhuo while sharing one with He Gu himself. Sheng Nian openly challenges the double standard 40 41. |
| Lunch confrontation | Warns Sheng Nian to stay away from Yan Feizhuo, only for Yan to state that he is the one pursuing Sheng Nian 50. |
| Starlight practice-room dispute | Demands that Sheng Nian apologize for declining He Gu’s invitation to sit together, threatening not to speak to him otherwise. Sheng Nian challenges the repeated demands and leaves with Yan Feizhuo 84 85. |
| Qixi outing revelation | Accidentally reveals that he ate hot pot with He Gu on Qixi. He dismisses it as merely a meal and claims he had not noticed the date 92. |
| Goose-herding task | Is attacked alongside He Gu after He Gu provokes the geese. Their group remains unable to complete the task while the other groups receive help from village dogs 98. |
Death Tide and the Childhood-Memory Mystery
During the game crisis, Jiang Shu dismisses Yubao as useless data and criticizes Sheng Nian for trying to save him instead of concentrating on the mission. Sheng Nian rejects his judgment, contrasting his insults with the praise once offered by an important person from his childhood 76.
When the Death Tide later threatens both Jiang Shu and Yan Feizhuo, a confused childhood recollection leads Sheng Nian to identify Jiang Shu as “Big Brother” and rescue him. Yan Feizhuo’s game character is consumed instead. Subsequent instinctive reactions cause Sheng Nian to question whether Jiang Shu was actually that childhood figure 77 106 122.
Broken Engagement and Belated Pursuit
After learning how Jiang Shu has treated his brother, Sheng Yi tells Jiang Jin that the Sheng Family is ending the engagement. Jiang Shu initially responds to Sheng Nian with anger, accusing him of using family pressure and declaring that he will not coax him this time 105 107.
The public revelation of Jiang Shu’s temporary marking of He Gu intensifies the rupture. Jiang Shu tries to explain, but Sheng Nian blocks the new numbers he uses to contact him and openly arrives at filming holding Yan Feizhuo’s hand 108 109.
Jiang Shu then insists that he has realized Sheng Nian is the person he truly loves. He repeatedly seeks private conversations, follows him during tasks, and promises to make amends, despite Sheng Nian’s explicit refusals 115 122.
His attempt at a reconciliation gift exposes how little attention he paid to Sheng Nian’s wishes. He presents white gardenias and gardenia-shaped rings, claiming they match Sheng Nian’s pheromones and preferred design. Sheng Nian points out that he had repeatedly requested jasmine rings and that gardenia is He Gu’s scent 125.
Engagement Exposure and Loss of Family Support
While calling his mother to ask for help restoring the engagement, Jiang Shu fails to disconnect his microphone properly. The livestream captures his admission that he had wanted to end the engagement and now regrets it. Viewers reassess his conduct toward Sheng Nian and He Gu, triggering widespread condemnation 127.
His Starblog follower count falls sharply. His manager attempts to defend him by portraying He Gu as merely a close friend, but the response fails to contain the scandal 128.
Jiang Jin and their father decide against suppressing the backlash. Concerned that exposure of Jiang Shu as the family’s second son could affect the company, they plan to let the controversy cool and then move him out of entertainment into a company role 129.
Final Rejection and Assault Attempt
Jiang Shu continues pursuing Sheng Nian, offering him a seven-colored Yse Flower and invoking its romantic blessing. Sheng Nian rejects both the gift and the possibility of reconciliation, then leaves with Yan Feizhuo 131.
During a later commercial shoot, Jiang Shu follows Sheng Nian and again blames He Gu for their separation. When Sheng Nian rejects him, Jiang Shu uses their pheromone compatibility to induce his heat, carries him into nearby woods, and attempts to force a permanent mark. Yan Feizhuo arrives, kicks Jiang Shu away, and orders his bodyguards to seize him 137.
Reports afterward connect Jiang Shu to an attempted-rape police case. Online discussion identifies Sheng Nian as the intended victim and calls for updates and punishment; the provided account does not establish a subsequent verdict or sentence 141.
