History

Dressrosa Buster Call

Akainu received Sengoku’s order to destroy Dressrosa through a Buster Call. The operation originated with the Five Elders, who wanted to conceal Doflamingo’s crimes. Akainu accepted without hesitation, treating the order itself as proof that Dressrosa’s existence was unjust 26.

After Satoru Gojo froze the approaching Marine fleet, Akainu faced Uchiha Sasuke while Kuzan and Kizaru fought Esdeath and Enel. His magma attacks failed to penetrate Sasuke’s half-complete Susanoo, although Hell Hound managed to crack it. Sasuke then struck him across the frozen sea 27 28 29.

Humiliated, Akainu created a Magma Giant to fight Susanoo directly. Sasuke pierced its defenses with an Armament Haki-coated Chakra Longsword and destroyed it. Akainu refused to surrender and attempted to withdraw using Geppo, but Sasuke’s Chibaku Tensei trapped him inside a growing sphere of ice suspended above the battlefield 30 31.

Captivity and Release

The captured Akainu, Kuzan, Kizaru, and five Vice Admirals were forced to attend Gojo’s coronation. Seastone restraints secured them to their chairs but remained hidden from the audience, allowing their presence to appear as Marine recognition of Dressrosa’s new ruler. Akainu protested quietly because exposing their captivity would further disgrace the Marines 35.

The admirals returned to headquarters after a release costing 27 billion Beli. Akainu immediately demanded an attack on the Jujutsu Pirates, warning that their growing influence threatened the Marines. Sengoku refused, citing their inability to defeat the crew and the Five Elders’ order to avoid further conflict 37.

Operations Against the Emperors

When Gojo announced his challenge to Whitebeard, Akainu proposed attacking after the two sides had exhausted each other. He intended to redeem the Marines’ defeat at Dressrosa 40.

Akainu later joined Kuzan and Kizaru near Whole Cake Island to observe Gojo’s battle with the Big Mom Pirates. Once Big Mom fell, he ordered the fleet to prepare to eliminate her surviving crew after Gojo departed. Despite his hatred of Gojo, he initially avoided attacking him because Gojo remained uninjured and Akainu doubted that three admirals could prevent his escape 49 50.

Gojo intercepted the fleet, prohibited an attack on the Big Mom Pirates, and capsized nearby warships with Red. Sengoku ordered a retreat, which Kuzan carried out despite Akainu’s objections. Back at headquarters, Akainu argued that they had wasted an opportunity to defeat Gojo three against one; Sengoku challenged whether they could have injured him at all 51 52.

Paramount War

Akainu assembled at Marineford with the other admirals for Ace’s execution. During the battle, he deceived Squard into believing that Whitebeard had traded his followers’ lives for Ace’s freedom. Squard stabbed Whitebeard, but the wound did not stop him. Whitebeard subsequently drove Akainu back before confronting the other admirals 66 68.

After Ace’s rescue, Akainu pursued him and Luffy, knocked Ace down, and struck Crocodile aside when he intervened. Ace placed himself between Luffy and a magma punch, but Gojo appeared and stopped the blow with one hand 70.

Akainu’s attempts to engulf and ambush Gojo failed against Limitless. Recognizing that he could not defeat Gojo alone, he tried to hold him in place until other Marine fighters became available. Gojo repeatedly injured him, then used Conqueror’s Haki to suppress his Haki, Devil Fruit powers, and movement. Akainu attempted to prolong their confrontation through conversation, but Gojo exposed the tactic 70 71 72 73.

With the Marines’ other strongest fighters occupied, no one could assist him. Gojo overwhelmed Akainu in close combat and finished him with an Armament Haki-coated kick to the chest. Akainu became the first major fighter to fall at Marineford, left unconscious, gravely wounded, and bleeding heavily 74 75.

Service Under Dressrosa

Following the World Government’s destruction, Akainu and the other former Marine leaders were incorporated into Dressrosa’s navy. He became one of its ten admirals and worked to maintain peace under a government that permitted law-abiding pirates to continue traveling 81.

Personality

Akainu holds a rigid, uncompromising view of justice. He accepted Dressrosa’s destruction solely because Sengoku ordered it and repeatedly declared that all pirates should be eliminated. He also questioned why powerful figures such as Sasuke and Gojo had chosen piracy rather than Marine service 26 27 51 73.

His methods include deception, ambushes, and indiscriminate force. He manipulated Squard into attacking Whitebeard, attacked Gojo from behind, and unleashed volcanic bombs that struck Marines and pirates alike 68 71.

Proud and quick-tempered, Akainu reacted furiously to humiliation and repeatedly challenged Sengoku’s decisions to avoid further conflict with Gojo. Nevertheless, he could exercise tactical restraint: he initially chose not to attack the uninjured Gojo at Whole Cake Island and later fought to buy time rather than expecting to win alone. He also refused Sasuke’s demand to surrender 30 31 37 50 52 71.

Abilities & Skills

Magma-Magma Fruit

Akainu’s Logia-type Devil Fruit allows him to generate, control, and become magma. Kuzan considers him the strongest attacker among the Three Admirals 30 31.

  • Elementalization: Re-forms his body after it is dispersed and allows ordinary attacks to pass through without serious injury. Armament Haki can still injure him 71 72 74.
  • Heat and terrain destruction: Melts and evaporates the frozen sea, producing steam; sustained attacks can turn the surrounding ground into magma and flames 29 30 72.
  • Magma propulsion: Uses the recoil of magma jets to retreat from an incoming attack 72.
  • Defensive shaping: Forms large magma shields and reconstructs damaged magma constructs 31.
  • Limits: His magma cannot reach Gojo through Limitless, while Red can blast through his attacks 70 71 72.

Named Magma Techniques

  • Dog Biting Crimson Lotus / Canine Red Lotus: Shapes magma into a dog’s head or hound that lunges at an opponent. Its heat melts nearby ice 28 29 71.
  • Meteor Volcano: Launches enormous magma fists skyward, which rain down like meteors. It failed to penetrate Sasuke’s Susanoo, and Gojo destroyed much of its barrage with Red 29 31 72.
  • Great Eruption: Produces devastating magma attacks, shown both as a bombardment of volcanic bombs and as an enormous upward magma fist 68 70 74.
  • Hell Hound: One of his ultimate attacks; powerful enough to crack Sasuke’s half-complete Susanoo, though not to reach Sasuke inside 29.

Magma Giant

Akainu creates an enormous magma construct and controls it while standing on its shoulder 30 31.

  • Wields a Magma Longsword capable of releasing a flying slash that cuts a hundred-meter trench through the frozen sea 31.
  • Regenerates damage inflicted by attacks lacking Armament Haki 31.
  • Can form a giant shield to intercept an incoming weapon 31.
  • Was pierced by Sasuke’s Haki-coated Chakra Longsword and subsequently destroyed from within 31.

Haki

Akainu is a veteran practitioner of both Armament and Observation Haki 28.

  • Armament Haki: Coats his fists to clash with Sasuke’s sword, injures Ace with a punch, and reinforces his upper body against Red 28 70 73.
  • Observation Haki: Tracks Gojo’s high-speed movements and enables him to elementalize part of his head before a potentially fatal strike 72.
  • Limitations: Cannot instantly coat an object as large as Sasuke’s Chakra Longsword. His Haki is also surpassed by Gojo’s 31 74.
  • Conqueror’s Haki: Does not possess it. Gojo’s Conqueror’s Haki suppresses his ability to use both Haki and his Devil Fruit 72 73.

Geppo

  • Uses Geppo to move through the air and launch attacks from above 71.
  • Attempted to escape Chibaku Tensei with it, but could not overcome the technique’s pull 31.

Physical Endurance

  • Continues fighting after Gojo breaks several bones in his chest 72.
  • Survives repeated hits from Red, though they leave him seriously injured 73 74.
  • Is ultimately incapacitated by a Haki-coated kick that caves in his chest 74 75.

Equipment

  • Marine uniform and justice coat: Worn during his service as a Marine admiral. His uniform is left in tatters during his battle with Gojo 66 73.
  • Den Den Mushi: Receives Sengoku’s Buster Call order through one 26.

Relationships

  • Sengoku — Fleet Admiral and superior. Akainu follows his operational orders but angrily disputes his restraint toward Gojo 26 37 52.
  • Kuzan — Fellow admiral. Despite their disagreements, Akainu remains concerned about his defeat; they later serve together under Dressrosa 31 81.
  • Kizaru — Fellow admiral and partner in the Dressrosa and Whole Cake Island operations 27 49 51.
  • Uchiha Sasuke — Opponent who defeats and captures him at Dressrosa; later a fellow admiral in Dressrosa’s navy 31 81.
  • Satoru Gojo — Repeated enemy whose rise Akainu tries to stop. Gojo ultimately defeats him at Marineford, and Akainu later serves under Dressrosa’s command 37 51 74 81.
  • Squard — Target of Akainu’s deception, manipulated into stabbing Whitebeard 68.
  • Whitebeard — Enemy who drives Akainu back after discovering his manipulation of Squard 68.
  • Ace and Luffy — Fugitives he pursues at Marineford; Gojo prevents him from killing them 70 71.
