Background / History

Before her summoning, Esdeath was a general in the world of Akame ga Kill! with an undefeated military record. Her experience commanding armies later gives her a substantial advantage over Sasuke and Enel in naval command exercises 39.

Gojo receives Esdeath as the random reward for completing his mission to kill Arlong. A magic circle gathers blue light into her form, after which she identifies Gojo as her captain and kneels to swear loyalty. Gojo helps her stand and tells her that they are comrades rather than requiring her to kneel 4.

Personality

Esdeath combines a commanding, queenly presence with a strong appetite for combat. She eagerly seeks powerful opponents, becomes more excited when they prove troublesome, and repeatedly asks for opportunities to lead troops into war. Her enthusiasm extends to slaughter: she is visibly disappointed when Gojo forbids her from killing Nezumi’s soldiers, but obeys his restriction 4 9 17 28 58.

Her loyalty does not prevent her from teasing Gojo. She mocks his unsuccessful attempt to recruit Nami and freely questions his instructions. She also becomes displeased when Rebecca embraces him, releasing enough cold that Enel complains—then freezing Enel for the interruption 5 33.

Esdeath remains curious about the unfamiliar world around her. Crocodile’s Devil Fruit, Sky Island, and Dressrosa’s transformed toy citizens all draw her interest 6 9 18.

Ice Manipulation

Esdeath’s ice powers come from her Teigu, Demon’s Extract: The Demon God Manifestation, rather than a Devil Fruit. She can freeze terrain and opponents, create weapons and constructs, and combine her ice with physical attacks 6 10 30.

• Ice Seal: Thousand Miles — Spreads ice rapidly across the ground. She initially uses it to freeze hundreds of Marines’ feet without killing them; at Sabaody, she freezes fleeing pirates completely and shatters them with a finger snap 4 14.
• Ice Spear — Creates and throws an ice projectile powerful enough to collapse a wall. Robin escapes the attack unharmed 5.

Cocoyasi Village and Alabasta

Immediately after her summoning, Esdeath accompanies Gojo to confront Captain Nezumi at Cocoyasi Village’s harbor. After Gojo stops the Marines’ gunfire, she obeys his order to spare the soldiers and freezes their feet in place 4.

A month later, in Alabasta, she uses an ice spear to force the concealed Robin into the open. During the confrontation with Crocodile, she freezes the sand beneath herself and later kicks Koratt out of the path of his spreading Erosion Cycle 5 6 7.

Sky Island, Water 7, and Sabaody

Esdeath and Sasuke jointly subdue Enel on God’s Island. Her Haki-coated kick strikes his elemental body, and their combined assault leaves his feet frozen with Sasuke’s sword at his neck. After Enel joins, Esdeath again threatens him with her rapier when he objects to surrendering the Ark Maxim to the crew 10 11.

At Water 7, she accompanies Gojo to recruit Lucci’s group and fights Kaku after their identities as World Government agents are exposed 12 13.

At Sabaody, she helps eliminate the pirates attempting to seize the Ark Maxim, freezing and shattering those who flee. She subsequently accompanies Gojo to the bar where he meets Rayleigh 14.

Dressrosa’s Liberation and the Buster Call

Esdeath enthusiastically supports Gojo’s plan to take Dressrosa, asking whether she can become a general and lead troops. During the palace assault, she intercepts Doflamingo’s opening attack, freezes over a hundred soldiers, and fights Diamante while continuing to kill surrounding troops 17 21 23.

When the Marines attack Dressrosa, she takes on Kuzan. Her ice constructs and superior swordsmanship force him onto the defensive, culminating in her enormous Haki-coated ice ball. She is the first of Gojo’s three principal fighters to finish her duel, and Dressrosa’s citizens cheer her victory over the Admiral 27 28 30 31.

Admiral of Dressrosa

Esdeath stands beside Gojo at his coronation and is subsequently appointed an Admiral of Dressrosa. She oversees naval training and receives command of the Second Fleet 35 36 39 58.

Although she repeatedly requests overseas campaigns, Gojo initially refuses because Dressrosa lacks sufficient troops to maintain order after the World Government’s collapse. Her fleet nevertheless demonstrates its superiority in clashes arising from economic disputes 58 61.

Assault on Mary Geoise

While Gojo goes alone to Marineford, Esdeath leads Dressrosa’s expedition against Mary Geoise. Her fleets overwhelm the Marines guarding the approach, bringing Dressrosa’s forces close enough to threaten the Holy Land 65 69.

Following Sasuke’s destruction of Mary Geoise, Esdeath joins the confrontation with the surviving World Government leaders. She knocks Kong back and freezes part of his body, then fights him and the sword-wielding Elder simultaneously 79.

Gojo defeats Imu and kills the Five Elders and Kong himself. Esdeath complains that he has taken their opponents before returning to Dressrosa with the victorious group 80.

Relationships

• Satoru Gojo — Captain, king, and Haki teacher. Esdeath pledges loyalty to him, while he treats her as a comrade and entrusts her with major military commands. His system later grants him access to her abilities, surprising her when he uses ice powers 4 10 27 65.
• Sasuke Uchiha — Fellow summoned crewmate and Admiral. They cooperate against Enel but argue over who gets to fight him; Esdeath also outperforms him in virtual command exercises 10 39.
