Background / History
Marine Career
Garp spent decades fighting leading pirates, including Roger, Whitebeard, and Golden Lion. He fought Roger on equal footing and pursued him across the seas. His role at God Valley established his reputation as the Marine Hero; Sengoku later credited him with holding the front line when the Celestial Dragons’ rule was endangered 5 179 413 416.
His influence extended to training powerful fighters. Dragon and Aokiji received his guidance, and his reputation for recognizing talent gave weight to his later endorsement of Lorne 24.
Taking Lorne to Sea
Garp first noticed Lorne after witnessing his golden attack destroy a pirate ship. On reaching the shore, he recognized Lorne’s mother, Masha, who pleaded with him to take her son to Marine Headquarters. Lorne subsequently awoke aboard Garp’s warship, where Garp announced a detour to visit Ace and Luffy 2 3.
Fascinated by Lorne’s regeneration, Garp tested him through repeated physical beatings without Haki. Even punches that broke bones and caused internal bleeding failed to keep the boy down. Lorne’s Haymaker then reddened Garp’s fist despite their enormous difference in strength, revealing an unfamiliar defense-bypassing power 3 5 6.
Garp insisted that Lorne become his grandson. He accepted Lorne’s refusal to wear a uniform, agreed to handle his resistance to taking orders, and promised him time to visit Masha. Their bond also developed through shared meals and arguments over food, which Bogard recognized as unusually grandfatherly behavior from Garp 7 8.
Training the Three Grandsons
At Foosha Village and Mount Colubo, Garp introduced Lorne to Luffy and Ace. He intended to turn all three into strong Marines, responding to the younger boys’ pirate ambitions with his “Fist of Love” 10 12 17.
During their joint training, Lorne shielded Ace and Luffy from Garp’s blows. Garp intensified his attacks in response, while Lorne’s regeneration allowed him to continue protecting them. A later Haymaker pushed Garp backward and briefly pierced his Armament Haki defenses 17 18.
On the voyage to Marineford, Garp taught Lorne Iron Body and the fundamentals of his Fist Bone technique. At Headquarters, he declared that Lorne possessed Admiral potential and arranged for Zephyr to train him in the Elite Recruit Camp 9 22 24.
Graduation and Protection from the Government
Garp appointed himself Lorne’s graduation opponent despite Sengoku’s objection that he was far too strong for the assessment. Their duel left Lorne gravely injured, but his final counterattack forced Garp backward. Garp carried him to the cafeteria, where Lorne recovered through food and Life Return and was declared to have passed the special-grade assessment 44 46 48.
When Lorne’s actions against Doflamingo drew official criticism, Garp defended his decision to fight pirates regardless of their government protection. He later confronted CP0 agents who wanted Lorne imprisoned, threatening to kill anyone who touched his grandson 78 90.
Advanced Training and the Deserted-Island Duel
Garp visited Lorne during his confinement and identified the flaw in his attempted Conqueror’s Haki Infusion: he was applying Haki superficially rather than properly condensing it. Garp offered full-power sparring, teaching him to refine his will through battle and recognize the rhythm of Ryuo 179 181.
Lorne’s developing fusion of Grit and Haki eventually cracked Garp’s hardening and made his hand numb. Garp compared the sensation to receiving Roger’s punch forty years earlier. As Lorne’s power became increasingly unfamiliar, Garp admitted that he could no longer confidently judge its eventual ceiling 182 183 185.
After Lorne’s two years of special training, Garp agreed to sail into the New World to assist him. On arrival, he sensed that Lorne had become strong enough to challenge the Four Emperors and demanded another fight 235 239.
Their battle devastated the deserted island and culminated in Galaxy Impact against Haymaker. Neither could put the other down, and Garp proposed a draw. He afterward acknowledged that Lorne would have to pursue his own justice independently, even though he did not entirely agree with it 243 244 245.
Alliance Against the Celestial Dragons
At Marineford, Garp confronted Lorne after his attacks endangered ordinary Marines. During their clash, Lorne explained his intention to expose the World Government’s hidden forces and overthrow the Celestial Dragons. Garp agreed to leave the stage to him and deliberately reduced his Ryuo, allowing Haymaker to throw him through an ice wall 315.
After the battle, Garp condemned the destruction and loss of life. He acknowledged the World Government’s corruption but feared that dismantling the existing order would leave civilians at the mercy of pirates. Lorne proposed an independent Fourth Pole Force to apply external pressure while principled Marines pursued reform from within 336.
Garp accepted a covert partnership on the condition that Lorne not target civilians. He promised to cover for him within the Marines, answer Sengoku and the Five Elders, and pass along classified information about the government’s movements 337.
Arrest and Rescue
The Five Elders identified Garp as a major source of Lorne’s strength and support. They stripped him of every military rank and his Marine Hero title, charged him with treason, and ordered Akainu, Kizaru, and CP0 to prevent his departure from Marineford 413 414.
Garp resisted the combined assault, shattering Akainu’s Great Eruption, intercepting Kizaru’s light bullets, and injuring the CP0 Commander. He nevertheless surrendered rather than expose Bogard, his guards, and Marineford’s innocent Marines to retaliation. He was secretly transported to a specially secured cell in Impel Down’s Level Six 415.
Lorne later reached Garp in the Water Prison, tore apart the Seastone chains passing through his shoulder blades, and carried him out. The surrounding Marine fleet refused to fire on their departure. Three days later, Garp reunited with Sengoku at a secluded harbor, still regarding himself as a condemned man wanted by the government 435.
Appearance
Garp is an elderly, heavily muscled man, described during Lorne’s graduation assessment as nearly three meters tall 3 46.
- Face and hair: Weathered features, a rugged, wrinkled face, and black-and-white hair 40 336 415.
- Signature clothing: A dog-head hat and a Marine coat bearing the word “Justice” 3 179.
- Other outfits: A floral shirt beneath his coat, or a simple black suit 179 336.
- Hands: Large, heavily calloused hands repeatedly compared to fans 31 414.
Personality
Garp is loud, irreverent, and openly delighted by courage. Lorne’s defiance reminds him of his younger self, and he responds to the boy’s ambition with laughter rather than demands for deference. He is also habitually seen eating senbei, stealing Sengoku’s snacks, and provoking the Fleet Admiral’s temper 6 8 43 132.
His affection is expressed through harsh training, insults, and physical discipline. He calls his punches the “Fist of Love” and reacts furiously to his grandsons’ ambitions to become pirates. Yet he takes visible pride in their growth, and his relationship with Lorne includes unusually playful competition over meals 7 13 17 20.
Garp values personal conviction more than official definitions of justice. He initially praises Lorne’s conscience-led outlook, but later makes clear that admiration does not mean complete agreement. His central reservation is practical: destroying the World Government without a replacement could expose ordinary people to worse violence 31 245 336.
His loyalty to people ultimately outweighs obedience to the Celestial Dragons. He protects Lorne against CP0 and accepts imprisonment rather than let his subordinates die defending him 90 415.
Abilities & Skills
Physical Strength and Endurance
Garp can inflict catastrophic injuries through physical force alone, without using Haki 3 5.
- Breaks Lorne’s ribs and arms during early training; a punch delivered at thirty percent strength fractures both forearms 5.
- Produces destructive shock waves and cracks a ship’s deck through concentrated body mechanics 6 22.
- Withstands Lorne’s throws and defense-bypassing punches well enough to continue fighting through the deserted-island duel 243 244.
- Limit: Bogard notes that age has reduced his stamina and recovery compared with his youth, making prolonged attrition a disadvantage against Lorne 242.
Armament Haki and Advanced Ryuo
Garp combines hardening with Ryuo capable of penetrating outer defenses and causing internal damage 181 244.
- Can coat his entire body in Armament Haki, though concentrated application avoids wasting stamina and mental energy 36.
- Drives Ryuo through Lorne’s armor and Haki defenses to damage his arms and muscles from within 181 240.
- Uses full-body hardening to reduce the impact of Lorne’s cliff-shattering throw 243.
- Limit: Lorne’s Grit-enhanced attacks can bypass or erode his Haki defenses 185 241.
Conqueror’s Haki Infusion
Garp condenses Conqueror’s Haki tightly around his fists. He identifies this mastery as part of what allowed him to fight Roger on equal terms 179.
- Demonstrates a controlled coating with no visible leakage 179.
- Teaches Lorne that Conqueror’s Haki expresses will and is refined through genuine combat 179.
- Releases black-and-red arcs during the punch that shatters Akainu’s Great Eruption 415.
Observation Haki
Garp uses Observation Haki to assess opponents and recognize dangerous changes in their power 185 239.
- Senses that Lorne has reached the strength needed to challenge the Four Emperors 239.
- Receives warnings when Lorne’s Grit and Conqueror’s Haki resonate unpredictably 185.
- Recognizes Lorne’s approaching presence before his dragon-form arrival at Marineford 311.
Martial Arts and Mobility
Garp supplements his punches with defensive conditioning, rapid movement, and aerial combat 9 240 242.
- Iron Body: Contracts his muscles into steel-like armor and teaches Lorne its basic mechanics 9.
- Soru: Moves rapidly enough that Lorne’s Observation Haki initially catches only a vague trail 240.
- Geppo: Pursues Lorne through the air and returns to his warship after their duel 242 244.
- Combat judgment: Counters Lorne’s pulling force by channeling Haki into his feet to stabilize himself 184.
Fist Bone Techniques
Fist Bone concentrates strength from the feet, waist, muscles, bones, and fascia into a single punching point 22.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Fist Bone | Foundational whole-body punch; also used with Armament Haki during Lorne’s graduation assessment 22 46. |
| Fist Bone: Meteor | Powerful single strike used against Lorne; the Meteor name is also used when Garp hurls a cannonball at Ace’s boat 46 184 187. |
| Fist Bone: Meteor Shower | Dense barrage that closes escape routes or intercepts numerous incoming attacks with precision 184 415. |
| Fist Bone: Impact | Concentrates Ryuo into his right fist for a direct clash 243. |
| Fist Bone: Galaxy Impact | Attack Garp presents as his peak during the deserted-island battle; later clashes with Haymaker at Marineford 243 315. |
