| Iron Body demonstrated | 135 | Uses Iron Body against Lorne’s recruitment test, but the blow breaks his arm bones. |

| Projected and combined Haki defense | 427 | Forms a massive translucent Armament Haki shield, then combines it with Kuina and Denjiro’s Haki to block poisoned Seastone bolts across an entire passage. |
Background / History
Recruitment and Calm Belt Training
Ryan trained under Zephyr alongside Bakel. Both were eager to join Lorne’s Independent Suppression Force and promised not to disgrace their instructor 121.
During Lorne’s selection test, Ryan suffered broken arm bones but rose again with a broken wooden sword in his remaining usable hand. His refusal to surrender earned Lorne’s approval, securing him a place among the Special Vanguard Team’s first members 135.
Lorne immediately subjected the recruits to weighted physical training, oppressive Haki, and Sea King hunts in the Calm Belt. Ryan began developing Armament Haki while learning to fight through exhaustion and fear 136.
Early Campaigns
Against Carlos, Ryan initially blocked an axe strike but was badly injured when his opponent overwhelmed his Haki. He nevertheless returned to battle, strengthened his Hardening, and coordinated a two-sided attack with Bakel 137 138.
Ryan subsequently boarded the Giant Axe Pirates’ escort ships and smashed through their officers and defensive lines. Against Jack, however, his Haki-coated fists could not penetrate the mammoth’s hide; Jack swept him and Bakel away, forcing Lorne to intervene 144 148.
After recovering, Ryan faced doubled physical training. He later fought dangerous creatures on the Island of Misfortune and learned Internalized Iron Body from Lorne 164 178 187 189.
Leaving the Marines
Ryan protested when Sengoku announced Lorne’s dismissal from the Marines. Sengoku secretly preserved the unit’s supplies and intelligence support, assigning Lorne to operate independently against the Four Emperors 190.
Ryan helped rally the fifty Marines who chose to remain with Lorne and personally lowered the Marine flag from the Fearless. He later explicitly told Smoothie that they were no longer Marines, but the Independent Suppression Force 191 231.
Voyage into the New World
At the harbor, Ryan detected Barton and Monte’s approaching pirate alliance and led the ship’s defenders into battle. He helped disperse poison gas, defeated Monte by breaking his rock armor, and severed Barton’s legs with Rankyaku 202 203.
During the descent toward Fish-Man Island, Ryan trained in precise underwater attacks, helped intercept Moll’s poisoned spears, and steered the Fearless through the island’s bubble passages 206 209 212.
After Lorne captured Smoothie and Jack, Ryan secured them with Seastone restraints and supervised their imprisonment. He also helped Kuina rescue the wounded Carrot, carrying her back to camp for treatment 230 233 235 236.
When Sea Kings surrounded the ship, Ryan diverted a giant turtle’s charge at the cost of injuring himself. He later destroyed two sea snakes while protecting a Marine, only to suffer broken ribs from a third 258 260.
Fearless Fortress and the Pluton Expedition
Following the Marineford conflict, Ryan led the boarding of the Holy Knights’ supply ships, securing treasure, medicine, weapons, and Seastone equipment. He then joined the assault on Titan Island’s fortress, fighting CP Agents and warning Lorne about its reinforced vault door 331 341.
After Titan Island became Fearless Fortress, Ryan assessed its defenses and uncovered documents exposing World Government dealings with underworld magnates. These records revealed plans to abduct civilians and liberated slaves, seize the fortress’s technology, and eliminate witnesses to its experiments 348 350 351.
For the Pluton-blueprint expedition, he supervised the Fearless’s reinforced coating and reported the completion of its Seastone armor. During the descent, he managed dangerous currents and encouraged his soldiers while enduring the pressure of Seastone and Fujitora’s gravity 360 361 363 365.
Wano Country
Ryan reported intelligence that the gravely wounded Kaido was searching Wano for the Yamata no Orochi Secret Medicine. Upon reaching Decayed Town, he was ordered to distribute food and clean water, then fought the Beasts Pirates alongside Kuina and Bakel 371 374 375.
During the Holy Knights’ airborne fortress attack, Ryan organized civilian evacuations, deployed defensive barriers, and prepared the Fearless’s secondary guns to support Lorne. After Lorne killed Saint Uranos, Ryan and Denjiro were left to stabilize the collapsing fortress, salvage resources, and receive its prisoners 380 381 387.
Ryan later reviewed the rebuilt Pluton · Fearless’s test results and brought Lorne news of the Cross Guild’s attack on a Wano resource island 396 399.
Impel Down Rescue
When the World Government imprisoned Garp, Ryan activated Wano’s communications network and coordinated its mobilization. At the docks, he checked ammunition distribution and Seastone capture-net supplies before the fleet departed 418.
Inside Impel Down, he helped Kuina and Denjiro block poisoned Seastone bolts, then used specialized twin pistols to disrupt charging beasts. He identified the route to Garp’s lowest-level prison and reacted furiously when Moga desecrated Garp’s bloodstained Justice cloak 427 428 432 434.
As Lorne entered the water prison to reach Garp, Ryan led the Samurai Corps in clearing the remaining enemies 435.
Appearance
- Muscular build: His bare-chested training reveals taut musculature, and he describes his abdomen as steel-hard 188 196.
- Bronzed complexion after training: The Independent Suppression Force’s soldiers become tanned during their harsh sea training 136.
- Smoking: Often carries a cigarette or cigar, including while guarding the Fearless and reviewing its rebuilt specifications 202 395 396.
Personality
Ryan’s defining trait is persistence under injury. He charges Lorne again despite a broken arm, returns to confront Carlos after being smashed through the ship, and orders his men to defend the deck rather than attend to him after suffering broken ribs 135 138 260.
His loyalty to Lorne does not prevent blunt criticism. He promises to protect the Fearless with his life, yet angrily calls Lorne a “hands-off bastard” for repeatedly leaving cleanup and administration to him 381 387.
Ryan is ruthless toward hostile pirates but protective of civilians and comrades. He kills fleeing attackers during Carrot’s rescue, condemns plans to exploit civilians as hostages, and organizes an evacuation rather than relying solely on Lorne to stop an aerial bombardment 233 350 380.
He also enjoys banter with Bakel and Carrot. His enthusiasm for fighting coexists with a healthy dread of additional training: he mocks Carrot for wanting to avoid the gravity chamber, then quickly backs down when Kuina offers him the same treatment 143 371.
Abilities & Skills
Armament Haki
Ryan uses Armament Haki for striking, defense, weapon enhancement, and movement 144 238 341 427.
- Offense: Coats his fists and fingers to crush weapons, break rock armor, and pierce opponents 144 203 233.
- Weapon coating: Channels Haki through a spear while fighting CP Agents 341.

- Barrier defense: Projects a shield and combines it with Kuina and Denjiro’s Haki to stop a volley of poisoned Seastone bolts 427.
- Limits: His earlier coating fails against Carlos’s stronger attack, and his punches cannot breach Jack’s mammoth hide 137 148.
Observation Haki
Ryan can perceive hostile presences and track movement, though sufficiently fast opponents can exceed his ability to respond 137 202.
- Detects the mass of pirates approaching the harbor before their ambush begins 202.
- Registers only a faint afterimage when Carlos accelerates toward him 137.

Finger Pistol Derivatives
Ryan specializes in piercing attacks, ranging from forceful punches to tightly concentrated fingertip strikes 137 206.
