Personality

Kuina is proud, disciplined, and deeply committed to swordsmanship. Although she remains undefeated against Zoro, his growing strength makes her fear that her father’s predictions about women’s limitations are true. Lorne’s examples of powerful women restore her ambition, and she chooses harsh training and real combat rather than abandoning her dream 110 111 112 113.

She values improvement more than military rank. After two years at sea, she tells Lorne that following him and seeing greater heights matter more than receiving a commission. Her determination also makes her impatient with being protected: she repeatedly worries that she is too weak to share his burden or keep pace with him 187 224 232.

Her treatment of enemies becomes severe. During Carrot’s rescue, she kills pirates even after they kneel and beg for mercy, stating that anyone who chooses piracy in the New World must be prepared to die. At the same time, protecting civilians and comrades becomes central to her swordsmanship, culminating in her resolve to protect others rather than simply cut everything 233 350 380 411.

History

Isshin Dojo and Departure

Kuina trains at her father Koshiro’s Isshin Dojo in Shimotsuki Village. By her first appearance, Zoro has never beaten her in 2,001 matches. Nevertheless, she fears losing her advantage as his strength grows, and Koshiro’s insistence that a woman cannot become the World’s Greatest Swordsman drives her to tears 110 111.

Lorne challenges Koshiro’s view, citing Big Mom and the swordswoman Gion as examples of women with exceptional power. With Dragon supporting his argument, Koshiro acknowledges his mistake and promises not to discourage his daughter again. Kuina accepts Lorne’s invitation to join his Independent Suppression Force, leaves with her father’s permission, and promises to await Zoro’s eventual challenge 112 113.

First Battles and Marine Service

At the floating restaurant, Kuina draws her sword against a living person for the first time, cutting the Buck Pirates’ wrists before they can attack. Lorne acknowledges her speed but criticizes her hesitation and urges more decisive strikes. Her later battle against an armored hammer wielder produces her first Iron-Cutting breakthrough 120 126 137.

Her early service also exposes the gap between her technique and New World power. She cannot pierce Jack’s mammoth hide and is knocked aside, forcing Lorne to intervene. Later, CP0 agents attack her on Saint Charlos’s orders; she refuses enslavement and prepares to fight to the death before Lorne rescues her 148 171.

When Lorne is stripped of rank and expelled from the Marines, Kuina protests alongside Ryan and Bakel. She remains with the Fearless as Sengoku secretly preserves the unit and sends it against the Four Emperors 190.

New World Trials

Kuina helps defend the Fearless underwater and requests a chance to fight Smoothie, but Lorne assigns her lesser Big Mom Pirates officers instead. She later helps Ryan rescue Carrot and assists Masha in cleaning the injured mink while Lorne treats her 206 207 209 224 233.

During a storm-driven Sea King attack, she is struck through the deck and nearly killed. Recalling both Koshiro’s teachings and Lorne’s instructions, she awakens Ryuo and bisects the crocodile-headed leader with Death Lion’s Song 259 260 261.

Marineford and Recovery

At Marineford, Kuina fights multiple Candidate Knights while helping protect the Fearless and evacuate the wounded. Saint Garling conceals an attack behind a fallen knight, exploits her momentary hesitation, and slashes her from the right shoulder to the left ribs 328.

She survives the wound. Lorne returns Wado Ichimonji to her hand and reminds her of her unfinished ambition; afterward, he kills Garling. Still pale during her recovery, Kuina resumes swinging her sword and vows to stand beside Lorne against future enemies 330 332 338.

Fortress Defense and Wano

Kuina takes part in planning Fearless Fortress’s defenses and confronts infiltrators threatening its civilians. Against Tesoro’s assassins, she develops more destructive Ryuo attacks and defeats the group, though the effort leaves her exhausted 350 352.

In Wano’s Flower Capital, she protects fleeing civilians from falling debris and accepts responsibility for the last line of defense while Lorne faces the larger threat. She later accompanies him and Olsen to the volcanic site containing the Soul of Pluton 380 381 388 391.

Becoming a Great Swordsman

Watching Mihawk fight Lorne changes Kuina’s understanding of swordsmanship. She recognizes that Mihawk’s strength comes from purified will and precise attacks rather than simply cutting material objects. After the duel, Lorne helps her resolve her doubts and refine her sword intent around following natural flow and protecting others 408 409 411.

During the descent through Impel Down, she defeats four awakened Jailer Beasts with one Ryuo-infused strike. Ryan and Denjiro recognize her as a Great Swordsman. Later in the rescue operation, Moga’s account of abusing the imprisoned Garp provokes her sword intent to erupt, though Lorne orders her to stand down 426 427 434.
