Background / History
Muzan has lived as a demon for roughly a thousand years. His central ambition is to overcome sunlight and become what he considers a perfect life-form. He searches for the Blue Spider Lily, creates more demons, and conducts experiments in pursuit of that goal 110 115 119.
His past includes killing a doctor whose image later returns to haunt him. Yoriichi is another source of enduring terror: memories associated with him remain so deeply embedded in Muzan's blood that they can surface within other demons 40 54.
Muzan also exploits human households to support his research. During their confrontation, Kirishima Bupai accuses him of becoming the Fujiwara family's son to study chemistry, then slaughtering the family despite their intention to leave him their estate. Muzan responds by dismissing humans as tools 119.
Appearance
- Male form: Tall and straight-backed, with pale skin, handsome features, crimson or rose-red slit-pupiled eyes, and an exquisite Western suit 110 116 119.
- Female form: Snow-white skin, long black hair, crimson slit pupils, and an ornate deep-purple twelve-layered kimono 53.
- Combat alterations: Secondary mouths emerge around his shoulder blade and beneath his ribs, accompanied by protruding bone spurs and bone-spiked whip blades 118 119.
- Visible agitation: Intense anger or excitement causes veins to bulge across his face and body; his demonic aura can manifest as dark-red blood mist 110 115.
Personality
Muzan treats both humans and subordinate demons as disposable. He measures the Lower Ranks' worth by their ability to kill Hashira and locate the Blue Spider Lily, executing Koyuki and Wakuraba when their answers displease him. His contempt extends to trusted servants: after Kokushibo dies, Muzan denounces him as incompetent despite privately acknowledging how much he had invested in him 53 54 115.
His arrogance coexists with extreme caution and fear of death. He initially sends Kokushibo after the apparent Blue Spider Lily rather than confront Kirishima himself. Only the loss of Kokushibo and the prospect of losing the flower overwhelm that caution 110 115.
When faced with an opponent he cannot defeat, Muzan abandons his claims of superiority. He offers Kirishima equality as a fellow Demon King, attempts to escape through self-destruction, and ultimately plays dead while imprisoned. Survival takes precedence over dignity or loyalty 119 122 123.
Abilities & Skills
Demon Creation and Blood Empowerment
Muzan's blood can transform humans into demons and strengthen existing demons 41 54.
- Transforms the sickly Rui into a demon 41.
- Gives Enmu and Crossing Dream blood that immediately increases their demonic auras 54.
- Offers his blood to Kirishima, promising eternity and the position of a new Demon King; Kirishima rejects the offer 119.
Blood-Borne Control and Memory Connection
Muzan maintains a connection to demons carrying his blood, allowing him to receive information and exert his will through them 40 54 75 110.
- Extracts fragments of Rui's final memories and receives an image of the apparent Blue Spider Lily through Hantengu's clone 54 110.
- Attempts to control Akaza and interfere with his memories; Hakuji's restored identity and attachment to Koyuki break that control 74 75.
- His own terror can reverberate through his blood: Kirishima's hanafuda earrings, Bright Red Blade, and question about life trigger overwhelming fear within Rui 40.
- Kirishima warns Rui that Muzan can kill him remotely 41.
Regeneration and Survival
Muzan can reconstruct his body after extensive mutilation, including dismemberment and being crushed into a barely human mass of flesh 119 120.
- Regenerates repeatedly during Kirishima's prolonged aerial assault 121 122.
- Attempts to escape by scattering his flesh; Kirishima captures more than six hundred pieces, including consciousness-bearing fragments sufficient to form a complete head 122.
- Remains alive as imprisoned fragments through repeated cycles of poisoning, disintegration, and regeneration 123.
- His regeneration cannot keep pace with Kirishima's attacks and does not prevent his final destruction 119 123.
Bodily Weapons and Blood Demon Art
Muzan alters his body to produce secondary mouths, bone spurs, whip blades, and iron brambles 118 119.
- Gathers energy through his secondary mouths to launch attacks 119.
- Destroys Koyuki and Wakuraba almost instantly, causing their bodies to burst apart 53 54.
- Uses an explosive self-destruct attack to scatter destructive energy and flesh across the surrounding area, forcing the nine Hashira and their companions onto the defensive 122.
- Cannot complete a full Blood Demon Art against Kirishima, who repeatedly interrupts its formation with Yamato 119.
Shapeshifting
Muzan can assume markedly different human appearances, including a female form that surprises the assembled Lower Ranks 53.
- Changes his apparent sex and physical presentation 53 116.
- Retains his commanding presence and recognizable demonic authority regardless of form 53.
Research
Muzan maintains a laboratory in Infinity Castle containing notebooks, chemical preparations, and vessels used to cultivate experimental demons 115 118 119.
- Devotes his research to overcoming sunlight and achieving perfection 110 119.
- Kirishima criticizes his chemistry, recordkeeping, and failure to discover that the Blue Spider Lily blooms in daylight 119.
Weaknesses
- Sunlight: Remains his defining vulnerability and the reason for his pursuit of the Blue Spider Lily. Direct exposure ultimately carbonizes his remaining flesh 110 123.
- Wisteria and anti-demon drugs: Concentrated wisteria causes severe burning pain and weakness. Shinobu's neurotoxins and cell-destroying agents repeatedly damage his imprisoned remains 123.
- Traumatic memories: Reminders of Yoriichi leave him trembling and sweating even after his subordinates have departed 54.
- Overwhelming force: Kirishima exceeds his perception, attack speed, and regenerative capacity. Kirishima deliberately restrains his own power to keep Muzan alive during their battle 119 120 121.
- Obsession with perfection: His desire for sunlight immunity makes him accept a painted flower as the Blue Spider Lily and eventually enter a prepared ambush 109 110 115 116.
Relationships
- Kirishima Bupai — Principal opponent and eventual captor. Kirishima exploits his search for the Blue Spider Lily, defeats him in Infinity Castle, and hands his surviving fragments to Shinobu 109 116 119 122.
- Rui — A demon Muzan created and manipulated. Rui's recovered memories expose Muzan's role in his suffering and the destruction of his family 41.
- Tanjiro and Nezuko Kamado — Victims and enemies. Tanjiro identifies Muzan as the source of his family's deaths and Nezuko's transformation; Muzan orders both siblings eliminated 41 54.
- Kokushibo — Upper Rank One and his most heavily invested fighting asset. Muzan entrusts him with retrieving the flower, then reacts to his death with rage and contempt 110 115.
- Enmu and Crossing Dream — Lower Rank agents whom Muzan strengthens and assigns to investigate Kirishima and kill the Kamado siblings 54.
- Akaza / Hakuji — Subordinate who rejects Muzan's control after recovering his human memories 75.
- Nakime — Infinity Castle's operator. Muzan relies on her spatial Blood Demon Art to withdraw from the Hashira's ambush and asks her to locate and separate the intruders 116 123.
- Shinobu Kocho — Receives his captured remains, subjects them to anti-demon poisons, and participates in their final destruction 122 123.
- Tamayo and Yushiro — Participate in experiments on his imprisoned flesh; Yushiro records the results with satisfaction at the opportunity for revenge 123.
Story Role / Major Arcs
Mount Natagumo Aftermath
Kirishima recreates a scene associated with Muzan's terror of Yoriichi by wearing Tanjiro's hanafuda earrings, wielding a Bright Red Blade, and asking Rui, “What do you take life for?!” Muzan later retrieves Rui's memories and is privately shaken by the unfamiliar swordsman's knowledge of that question 40 54.
At the subsequent Lower Rank meeting, Muzan kills Koyuki and Wakuraba. Crossing Dream and Enmu persuade him to spare Kamanue and investigate the anomaly instead. Muzan strengthens the pair with his blood and orders them to find Kirishima and dispose of Tanjiro and Nezuko 53 54.
The False Blue Spider Lily
Kirishima paints a Red Spider Lily blue and deliberately displays it where Hantengu's final transmitted image will reveal it to Muzan. Convinced that his long search has succeeded, Muzan sends Kokushibo to Suzuran Town with orders to kill Kirishima and return the flower unharmed 109 110.
After Kokushibo's defeat, Muzan's anger and desperation overcome his caution. He visits the ruined bamboo grove himself, devours the planted flower, and discovers that it is fake just as the nine Hashira attack 113 115 116.
Defeat in Infinity Castle
Muzan escapes the coordinated strike through Nakime's Infinity Castle and draws the attackers inside. Returning to his laboratory, he finds Kirishima already waiting for him 116.
Their confrontation becomes completely one-sided. Kirishima interrupts every attempted Blood Demon Art, rejects Muzan's offer of shared eternity, and uses Sin Devil Trigger to demonstrate an overwhelming difference in power. He then subjects Muzan to an extended aerial combo while deliberately keeping him alive 119 120 121.
Thrown before the Hashira, Muzan detonates his body in a final escape attempt. Kirishima intercepts his consciousness-bearing flesh fragments and gives them to Shinobu 122.
Captivity and Death
Muzan plays dead inside the containment bag but remains conscious through several days of poisoning and experimentation. Shinobu repeatedly administers anti-demon agents, Tamayo tests his regenerative responses, and concentrated wisteria further weakens his remains 123.
His flesh is finally exposed to sunlight and splashed with concentrated wisteria tea, reducing it completely to ash. At the moment of his death, Kagaya Ubuyashiki's curse marks recede and the remaining demons across the world disintegrate, ending the thousand-year demon scourge 123.
