Background

Dongfang Qiubai died after taking Viagra and transmigrated into the newborn Kirishima Bupai. His new father was seventy and his mother sixty at the time of his birth. As the Kirishima Family’s sole heir, he grew up surrounded by wealth, servants, and unusually protective parents 1.

The Strongest Swordsmanship System bound to him within days of his birth. For fifteen years, he used supposed depression and illness to explain his seclusion while secretly completing the system’s brutal training. His family believed him frail and frequently bedridden, unaware of his developed physique and combat ability 1.

His father opposed his wish to join the Demon Slayer Corps, fearing that the family would lose its only heir. Bupai nevertheless left home, already confident enough to regard ordinary demons as insignificant opponents 1.

Appearance

  • Hair: Short, silver-white hair; later appearances also describe it slicked back 82 132.
  • Eyes: Dark gray 73 82.
  • Build: Lean, muscular, and well-proportioned, with sharply defined facial features 56 99.
  • Distinguishing mark: A small scar at the tip of his brow, accurately reproduced on his wanted poster 56.
  • Usual clothing: Vergil-style trench coats in black or dark blue, often accompanied by sunglasses 8 55 82.
  • Corps attire: A black uniform and conspicuous white-and-gold cloak bearing the character for “slay” 18 24.
  • Sin Devil Trigger: A blue abyssal demon with armored arms, claws, spinal bone spikes, long blue energy blades, and cape-like structures surrounded by a blue halo 120.

Personality

Bupai combines overwhelming self-confidence with deliberate theatrics. He sings into thunderstorms, shouts about “power,” and arranges a chair and mirror specifically to admire himself with Yamato. His intimidating composure can collapse over mundane problems, including discovering that he has no local currency after entering the One Piece world 1 85 128.

He enjoys frightening, provoking, and embarrassing others. He forces Zenitsu to scout, tricks Inosuke into believing nine chocolates total eight, and turns defeated demons into agricultural laborers. His treatment of enemies often goes beyond defeating them: humiliation and prolonged punishment are recurring parts of his methods 13 29 36.

His abrasive manner does not exclude affection or practical help. He gives Tanjiro useful instruction, protects him and Nezuko, and is visibly touched when Urokodaki cleans his coat. His claim that he only trains Tanjiro out of boredom contrasts with the care and precision of that training 6 8 44.

Bupai recognizes suffering without accepting it as an excuse to harm innocents. He attempts to revive Akaza’s memories of Hakuji, helps Rui confront his lost family bonds, and condemns Gyutaro and Daki for passing their suffering on to others. He similarly challenges Kokushibo’s pursuit of strength as jealousy and self-deception 41 74 92 113.

Abilities & Skills

Vergil-Template Swordsmanship

His system training gives him precise sword control, rapid drawing techniques, and the ability to exploit an opponent’s weakest movements 1 3 102.

  • Splits a rock with an ordinary branch by directing strength from his feet through his waist and arms 6.
  • Defeats Tengen Uzui and Kyojuro Rengoku without needing a conventional blade-to-blade contest 21.
  • Disperses Muichiro’s attacks by striking critical points with the back of a borrowed sword 102.
  • Blocks Zoro’s blades while offering corrections to his speed, focus, and hesitation 130.
  • Uses the scabbard itself as a weapon, including against Rengoku and Gyutaro 21 91.

Spatial Manipulation

Bupai can cut, restrain, and traverse space. These abilities are present before he acquires Yamato 1 2 29.

  • Void Sword World: A sword-drawing technique that appears to freeze the surrounding space and pins its target in place 2.
  • Spatial restraints: Immobilizes demons with invisible bindings and stops Muichiro’s attacking hand without turning around 29 101.
  • Dimension Slash: Erases a Lanternfish and later forms part of his extended assault on Muzan 101 121.
  • Judgment Cut End: Uses extreme concentration and a disappearance explicitly distinguished from ordinary high-speed movement against Gyutaro and Daki 94.
  • Spatial traversal: Ignores the distance to Muzan during their confrontation 119.
  • Aerial movement: Hovers above Gyutaro’s crater and walks through the air as though using invisible stairs 91 140.
  • Interworld passages: Uses Yamato together with a coordinate scroll to enter another world 125.

Bright Red Blade

Bupai can heat his Nichirin Blade to scarlet through extraordinary grip strength 29 35.

  • Burns and cauterizes demon tissue, leaving severed tendons unable to regenerate normally 29.
  • Disables a sound-based Blood Demon Art by cutting its user’s vocal cords and neck muscles 29.
  • Severs Akaza’s arm and suppresses its regeneration with the blade’s solar energy 74.

Sin Devil Trigger

By stabbing himself with Yamato, Bupai releases immense demonic energy and assumes his true demonic form 120.

  • Destroys Muzan’s experimental study and damages deeper regions of the Infinity Castle through the transformation’s energy release 120.
  • Physically overwhelms Muzan and terrifies him into submission 120.
  • Creates a barrier at Enies Lobby to protect the island from the form’s destructive energy 151.
  • Limit: Consumes Devil Trigger points. Exhausting them forces him back into human form 151.

Summoned Swords and Combined Combat

Bupai manifests azure swords and combines them with his weapons, transformations, and martial arts 121.

  • Rains sword bolts onto Muzan and repeatedly suspends or launches him in midair 121.
  • Uses May Rain, Hundred Blossoms in Riotous Bloom, Five-Kick Combo, and Ascension during his “Test One” sequence 121.
  • Manifests a demonic-flame double behind himself while transformed 121.
  • Switches between human and demonic forms during the same extended attack 121.

Physical Ability and Defenses

His strength and reactions let him handle firearms, martial artists, and heavy machinery without relying exclusively on sword techniques.

  • Blocks Genya’s bullets and crushes his firearm’s specially made barrel by hand 12.
  • Redirects a locomotive with a kick 60.
  • Counters Akaza’s punch and deflects his rapid kicks with one hand 73 74.
  • Splits incoming bullets into pieces before they reach him 77.
  • Strikes Rob Lucci before his Finger Pistol can land 151.
  • Absorbs Saber’s full-power Excalibur blast without effort 196.

Teaching and Cooking

Bupai’s instruction emphasizes correct force transmission, targeted correction, and practical combat 6 8.

  • Uses a branch in daily spars to expose Tanjiro’s weaknesses and improve his breathing and movement 8.
  • Cooks competently during his stay on Mount Sagiri 8.
  • Performs Void Breathing · Secret Art · Spatial Harmony Cooking Technique, using precise knife work, spatial ripples, and controlled heat to prepare food 25.

Strongest Swordsmanship System

The system provides training, rewards, storage, and a shop rather than remaining an active instructor after his graduation 1 2 5.

  • Awards points for killing demons; documented rewards vary by target 11 13.
  • Sells weapons, food, drinks, medicinal seeds, and coordinate scrolls 13 31 85 125.
  • Provides storage that Bupai fills with redeemed supplies 13.
  • Offers destination-specific coordinate scrolls, including one for the Fate/stay night Holy Grail War 184.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Nichirin Blade — His primary early weapon. Normally black, it can become a Bright Red Blade under his grip 29.
  • Yamato — His favored sword, with white cord wrapping, a blue-and-gold guard, and a spatially disruptive presence. He avoids using it in a spar with Muichiro partly because he fears killing him 85 102.
  • Phantom Blade — A slender thrusting sword with spectral blue patterns; used to launch consecutive waves of sword energy 121.
  • Beowulf — Gauntlets flowing with a holy-light aura. Bupai worries their light attribute could destroy Muzan too quickly 121.
  • Kasugai Crow — A large, glossy black crow that delivers Corps orders and comments on his conduct 18 29 79.
  • Dragon Blood Flower seeds and tea — Purchased seeds have listed effects of refreshing the mind, accelerating recovery from minor injuries, and stabilizing existing injuries. He later drinks tea made from the flowers 31 33.
  • Dyed spider lily — Used as a supposed Blue Spider Lily to bait Muzan’s forces 111.
  • Coordinate scrolls — Establish destinations for travel between worlds when used with Yamato 125 184.
  • Portable speaker — Supplies music for his performance against Muzan 121.
  • Ark Maxim — His vessel during later travels with Crocodile and Enel 184.

Relationships

  • Kirishima Jisō and Bupai’s mother — Protective parents who treasure their sole heir. After their peaceful deaths in the shogunate’s tenth year, Bupai holds grand funerals and grants them posthumous titles 1 125.
  • Tanjiro Kamado — Student and companion. Bupai becomes his personal combat coach, saves him from the Hand Demon, and helps him escape with Nezuko 7 8 16 44.
  • Nezuko Kamado — Protects her from Shinobu and explicitly vouches that she has never killed a human and never will 44.
  • Sakonji Urokodaki — Host and fellow instructor on Mount Sagiri. Their relationship mixes Bupai’s teasing with practical cooperation and understated affection 5 6 8.
  • Zenitsu Agatsuma — Final Selection companion whom Bupai coerces into scouting and repeatedly frightens. The repeated encounters nevertheless make Zenitsu less fearful of demons 11 13.
  • Genya Shinazugawa — Initially attacks Bupai over a misunderstanding. After a severe beating, he follows him and gradually develops awe toward his strength 12 13.
  • Shinobu Kocho — Initially enjoys hearing about his punishment of Doma’s subordinates. Their relationship becomes openly antagonistic when he obstructs her pursuit of Nezuko, restrains her, and slaps her buttocks 33 44.
  • Kagaya Ubuyashiki — Corps leader who assigns Bupai missions and knew his father through earlier dealings involving the family’s caravan 19 79.
  • Muichiro Tokito — Demands the Yoriichi Type Zero key from him and later spars with him, only to discover a vast difference in ability 101 102.
  • Muzan Kibutsuji — Principal demon adversary. Bupai uses the spider lily as bait, overwhelms him in the Infinity Castle, and deliberately prolongs their fight to perform combinations 114 120 121 122.
  • Roronoa Zoro — An aspiring challenger whose attacks Bupai critiques. Bupai promises another opportunity on the Grand Line; Zoro resolves to become strong enough to make him draw his blade 130 143.
  • Crocodile and Enel — Travel with him aboard the Ark Maxim and fight alongside him in the Holy Grail War setting 184 196.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Mount Sagiri and Final Selection

After encountering Tanjiro and Urokodaki, Bupai stays on Mount Sagiri and supplements Tanjiro’s training with technical guidance and daily combat practice. He also creates additional obstacles by cutting down trees around the training area 3 5 6 8.

During Final Selection, he travels with Zenitsu and Genya while killing demons for system points. Despite rejecting requests to form a larger team, he attracts participants seeking safety behind him. He saves Tanjiro from the Hand Demon and clears the mountain of demons, earning immediate promotion to Hashira 13 14 16 18.

Joining the Hashira and Field Missions

At Corps Headquarters, Bupai accepts the Hashira’s challenge to test him. He places his sheathed blade against Tengen’s neck and stops Rengoku with a scabbard deflection followed by an elbow strike, leaving the assembled Hashira stunned 21.

In Suzuran Town, he defeats three demons and forces them to reclaim abandoned farmland. On Mount Natagumo, he kills the Spider Demon threatening Inosuke, challenges Rui’s distorted idea of family, and uses Tanjiro’s earrings as props to help Rui recover important memories. He later blocks Shinobu so Tanjiro can flee with Nezuko 29 36 40 41 44.

Train Disappearances and Akaza

Bupai receives orders to investigate attacks involving multiple trains and stations, with more than six hundred people dead or missing. The operation involves Enmu and Crossing Dream, while local authorities have falsely branded Bupai a Class-A felon and named Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke his accomplices 55 56.

Outside Central Station, he rejects Akaza’s invitation to become a demon and addresses him as Hakuji, briefly stirring memories of Koyuki. After Muzan’s influence drives Akaza back into combat, Bupai severs his arm with the Bright Red Blade. Following the battle and the release of arrested Corps members, he spends over three weeks recovering at the Butterfly Mansion 74 79.

Entertainment District and Swordsmith Encounters

While hunting demons in the Entertainment District, Bupai earns enough points to purchase Yamato. Against Gyutaro and Daki, he condemns both their crimes and their use of past injustice to justify killing innocents, before deploying Judgment Cut End 85 92 94.

He subsequently saves Kotetsu from Lanternfish, finds the activation key for Yoriichi Type Zero, and clashes with Muichiro. After defeating Gyokko, he seals Upper Rank Five inside his own pot and brings it back to the inn, calling it a chamber pot 101 102 105.

Kokushibo and the Infinity Castle

Bupai plants a dyed spider lily outside Suzuran Town to draw out Muzan’s forces. Kokushibo arrives instead. Bupai exposes his identity as Tsugikuni Michikatsu, attacks the jealousy underlying his ambitions, and kills him. He then orders the remaining nine Hashira to assemble, expecting Muzan to come personally 111 112 113 114.

Inside the Infinity Castle, Bupai dismantles Muzan’s attacks and rejects his appeal to human mortality. He demonstrates Sin Devil Trigger, purchases Phantom Blade and Beowulf, and subjects Muzan to an extended “Test One” combination while deliberately keeping him alive 119 120 121 122.

Kirishima Shogunate

Returning home, Bupai demands the Kirishima Family’s forces and resources to support a rebellion. He subsequently establishes the Kirishima Shogunate and develops it into a powerful industrial state with compulsory education and healthcare 124 125.

After fifteen years of rule, he becomes bored with the settled world. He purchases a coordinate scroll and leaves for the One Piece world through a passage opened with Yamato 125.

One Piece World

Bupai arrives near the Baratie during Don Krieg’s attack. His early travels include correcting Zoro’s swordsmanship, executing the corrupt Captain Nezumi after evidence of his crimes is uncovered, and collecting 70 million Berries from Nami 125 130 134 143.

In Loguetown, he learns that he is recognized as the new world’s Greatest Swordsman and has a 1.6 billion-Berry bounty. The wanted poster accuses him of killing Hawkeye and attacking a Marine base; he tears it up and decides to visit Marine Headquarters 143.

At Enies Lobby, his Sin Devil Trigger points run out, but he still defeats Rob Lucci and forces Spandam to provide a warship and open the Gates of Justice. He drives off intercepting Marine vessels and reaches Marineford alone 151 152.

Holy Grail War

During later travels aboard the Ark Maxim, Bupai redeems a coordinate scroll for the Fate/stay night Holy Grail War. When Sea Kings surround the ship in the Calm Belt, he cuts them down with two swings of Yamato 184.

In the Holy Grail War setting, Crocodile kills Medea while Enel deals with Berserker. Bupai absorbs Saber’s Excalibur blast and crushes her connection to Shirou Emiya, causing Artoria to vanish. The corrupted Holy Grail then erupts beneath Ryuudou Temple and releases All the World’s Evil 196.
