History

Ruler of Sky Island

Enel ruled Sky Island as a self-proclaimed god from the Golden Divine Palace in Upper Yard. His Mantra monitored activity across the island, including his priests, civilians, Shandia warriors, and creatures within the cloud sea. Kirishima Bupai’s arrival disturbed this surveillance: instead of a readable presence, Enel perceived an inexplicable void near the White Sea entrance. He dispatched Shura, Ohm, and Gedatsu to investigate 159.

After Kirishima defeated the priests, Enel attempted to punish him with lightning. One strike aimed at Conis’s home was destroyed by Kirishima’s May Rain technique. When Kirishima reached the palace, Enel offered him the position of High Priest in exchange for allegiance; Kirishima instead demanded compensation for damage to Conis’s home 160 163 164.

Enel unleashed four lightning attacks, all of which vanished against Royalguard: Perfect Block. His subsequent close-range staff thrust ended with Kirishima slapping him through the palace wall and into a mountainside. Left barely conscious, with broken bones and internal injuries, Enel begged for his life and offered submission 164 165.

Kirishima confiscated the Ark Maxim as compensation and forced Enel to charge it. When Enel attempted to escape afterward, Kirishima stopped him with killing intent and ordered him to remain aboard as the ship’s “power bank.” Sky Islanders celebrated their former ruler’s departure 165 166.

Service in Alabasta

Still injured, Enel piloted and powered the Ark Maxim to Alabasta. In Rainbase, he carried Kirishima’s plastic chair, supplied gold for spending money, and defended his captain’s dignity before the frightened patrons of the Sand Camel Bell Tavern. A newspaper account of Urizen’s exploits convinced him that serving the “world’s strongest” made him the world’s second strongest 166 167 168 169.

Kirishima ordered Enel to make the ark habitable, clean it, and collect him from Alubarna. Enel used electricity to remodel the cabins and forced captured Baroque Works agents to scrub the deck. Exhausted by his injuries and electrical output, he fell asleep and missed the rendezvous 170 171 172.

After catching up with Kirishima near Crocodile’s battle, Enel received thirty minutes to clean the ship and prepare dinner. He dragged Crocodile aboard and falsely claimed that Kirishima had conscripted him as chief cleaner. Their fighting and mutual inability to cook nearly ruined the meal; Enel ultimately blasted the foie gras with lightning, while Crocodile added oil and salt. Kirishima judged the result average 173 174 175 177 178.

When Enel repeated his false claim about Crocodile’s assignment, Kirishima struck him into the ark’s bulwark with Yamato’s scabbard and identified him as the ship’s power bank. Crocodile subsequently secured a place in the Demon King Travel Group, becoming Enel’s rival for standing aboard the ship 179 181 182.

Voyage to Water 7

Enel resented Crocodile’s new position and insisted that the Ark Maxim was still his ship. Their argument nearly escalated into a lightning-and-sand battle, but a faint display of Kirishima’s power immediately silenced both men 182.

He later tried to prove his value by boasting about his lightning as an energy source. Witnessing Kirishima destroy the Sea Kings and vortex obstructing the Calm Belt forced him to recognize the gulf between their abilities. The group reached Water 7 several days later 183 184 185.

Holy Grail War

In Fuyuki, Enel badly injured Archer with Divine Judgement and intercepted Cu Chulainn’s attack on Kirishima with a sixty-million-volt Thunder Dragon. He subsequently assumed his full Thunder God form during the athletic-field confrontation 187 188 189.

At Ryuudou Temple, Enel repeatedly killed Heracles as God Hand restored him. Even after Illya expended all three Command Spells to empower Berserker, Enel destroyed him with a full-power Divine Judgement. He later departed through a dimensional rift with Kirishima and Crocodile after Kirishima erased the corrupted Holy Grail 194 195 197.

Appearance

  • Build and clothing: A tall, bare-chested man, initially shown wearing a white hood over short yellow hair. Later passages describe a headscarf, including one soaked with blood and sweat during the voyage to Alabasta 159 164 166 168.
  • Eyes: Golden pupils that flash with lightning when he becomes angry or uses his powers 164 182.
  • Golden earlobes: Enormous golden earlobes hang down his torso; they are knocked free by Kirishima’s slap 159 164.
  • Thunder Drums: Four drums positioned behind him flicker with electricity 159.
  • Injuries: Kirishima’s attacks leave conspicuous cheek bruising and swelling. Later passages describe Enel as having a single or lone eye, without establishing the cause 166 175 179 183.

Personality

Enel’s rule rests on his conviction that he is omniscient and omnipotent. He treats resistance as sacrilege, regards those beneath him as insects, and takes satisfaction in the terror caused by his lightning. Mantra’s inability to perceive Kirishima unsettles him because it contradicts the supposed absoluteness of his divine authority 159 162 164.

His arrogance collapses when survival is at stake. After his defeat, he begs, flatters, obeys, and gradually develops a clumsy ability to anticipate Kirishima’s wishes. Learning Urizen’s reputation lets him recast his humiliation as prestige: rather than accepting that he is a captive power source, he imagines himself the world’s second strongest and the Demon King’s foremost officer 165 167 169.

Submission does not make him kinder to weaker people. He redirects fear and resentment toward the Baroque agents, uses lightning to enforce menial labor, and tries to make Crocodile a scapegoat. His rivalry with Crocodile exposes his insecurity over ownership of the ark and his unofficial claim to the vice-captaincy 172 174 175 179 182.

Abilities & Skills

Rumble-Rumble Fruit

Enel generates and controls lightning, transforms his body into electricity, and delivers attacks ranging from narrow electrical lashes to enormous thunderbolts 164 165 172 173.

Technique / Form Output Demonstrated use
Thunderbird 30 million volts Creates a giant blue-white lightning bird 164.
Thunder Dragon 60 million volts Creates a lightning dragon; intercepts Cu Chulainn’s Gáe Bolg and leaves him burned and injured 164 188.
Thunder Beast 100 million volts Forms a wolf-shaped lightning beast 164.
Thunder God — embryonic form 200 million volts Manifests an immense Thunder God phantom whose pressure cracks the palace floor 164.
Thunder God 200 million volts Transforms Enel into a towering body of lightning and plasma 189.
Divine Judgement Variable; maximum output also demonstrated Produces destructive lightning pillars. Badly injures Archer and ultimately destroys Heracles 173 187 195.
Discharge Not specified Transfers electricity directly into the Ark Maxim’s power core 165.
“Cleaning Incentive” 30 million volts A punitive application of Divine Judgment used against captive cleaners 174.
  • Destructive scale: A redirected Divine Judgement obliterates a rocky hill, leaving a molten crater hundreds of meters across 173.
  • Control: He can redirect a descending lightning pillar at the last moment and shape smaller arcs into whips 172 173.
  • Limit against Kirishima: His fourfold palace assault cannot disturb Royalguard: Perfect Block 164.

Elementalization and Electrical Movement

  • Turns into human-shaped lightning and moves quickly enough to appear to teleport during combat 164 188.
  • Uses Elementalization to repair some external injuries after his defeat 166.
  • Cannot evade or negate Kirishima’s energy-annihilating demonic power through lightning transformation; residual demonic energy continues weakening him afterward 165 166.

Mantra

Enel’s perception covers Sky Island over distances of tens of thousands of meters, registering sounds, emotions, thoughts, and minute movements 159.

  • Detects activity ranging from hidden Shandia warriors to sky fish moving through the cloud sea 159.
  • Registers Kirishima as an unreadable region of silence rather than a normal living presence 159 166.
  • Fails to provide useful feedback on Kirishima even during Enel’s attacks 162 164.

Ark Operation and Lightning Metallurgy

Enel created the Ark Maxim and understands its electrical propulsion and controls 165 170.

  • Charges the power core and supplies a continuing current to keep the ship’s basic systems operating 165 166.
  • Uses electricity to alter the cabins, weld a golden dining table, and add gold trim, though his hurried workmanship leaves slag, crooked fittings, and damaged components 172 174.
  • Electrical output is physically taxing: charging the ark while badly injured exhausts his reserves, and remodeling contributes to his collapse into sleep 165 172.
  • Has no demonstrated cooking expertise; his attempt to prepare foie gras relies on blasting the frying pan with lightning 177 178.

Equipment & Items

  • Golden Staff — A lightning-patterned staff with a purple gemstone in a spiral gold setting. Conducts electricity, strikes the Thunder Drums, serves as a melee weapon, and temporarily functions as a crutch after his defeat 159 164 166 175.
  • Thunder Drums — Four electrically charged drums behind his body, struck to summon major lightning attacks 159 164 188.
  • Ark Maxim — His enormous golden flying vessel, powered by his electricity through a central core, propellers, and Jet Dial arrays. Kirishima seizes it as compensation, although Enel continues to claim it as his own 165 182.
  • Lightning Timer — A wrist-worn timer used to track Kirishima’s dinner deadline 177 178.

Relationships

  • Kirishima Bupai / Urizen — Defeats and forcibly recruits Enel as the ark’s pilot and power source. Enel fears him intensely while seeking approval and prestige through service 164 165 167 169.
  • Crocodile — Fellow travel-group member and rival for status. Enel initially tries to enslave him as a cleaner; Crocodile retaliates by belittling him as merely a power bank 175 179 182.
  • Shura, Ohm, and Gedatsu — Priests under Enel’s command. After their defeat, he dismisses them as unworthy of their titles and offers Kirishima a superior position 159 160 164.
  • Mr. 5, Mr. 4, and Miss Merry Christmas — Captive Baroque Works agents whom Enel forces into cleaning duties under threats of electrocution 171 172 174.
  • Heracles — Opponent at Ryuudou Temple. Enel repeatedly overcomes his resurrections before destroying him despite Illya’s three Command Spells 194 195.
