Background / History
Meeting Kirishima and Urokodaki
Tanjiro first encounters Kirishima Bupai while approaching a mountain temple with Nezuko, hoping to find shelter. Inside, they discover a demon eating a corpse. Kirishima orders them back and slices through both the demon and the temple, leaving Tanjiro stunned 2.
Sakonji Urokodaki subsequently questions Tanjiro about his responsibility for his demon sister. When Tanjiro cannot answer what he would do if she ate someone, Urokodaki slaps him. Tanjiro eventually accepts the demand that he kill Nezuko and take his own life in atonement should she cross that line. Urokodaki then offers to train him on Mount Sagiri 3 4.
Training on Mount Sagiri
Tanjiro undertakes sword practice, running, mountain climbing, and hand-to-hand training while Nezuko remains asleep. Kirishima supplements Urokodaki’s instruction with practical advice and eventually daily sparring, repeatedly exposing weaknesses in Tanjiro’s breathing and movements 5 6 7 8.
After a year and a half, Tanjiro splits the training boulder and thanks Kirishima for helping him improve so quickly. Urokodaki declares his training complete, gives him a Disaster Ward Mask, and sends him to Mount Fujikasane for the Final Selection 8.
Final Selection
When Kirishima immediately ventures ahead, Tanjiro initially wants to follow him for safety. He steadies himself and decides to pass through his own strength rather than remain dependent on his mentor 9.
During the selection, Tanjiro battles the Hand Demon, severing its arms but struggling against their rapid regeneration. Kirishima intervenes, and Tanjiro recognizes his sword-drawing stance in time to leap clear. After surviving the selection, Tanjiro joins the Corps and returns toward Mount Sagiri to see Nezuko 15 16 18 19.
Rui and the Dispute over Nezuko
Tanjiro fights Rui’s cutting threads while rejecting the demon’s belief that family bonds require domination. Nezuko shields him from a lethal attack, and their concern for each other unsettles Rui’s understanding of family. After Rui confronts his memories and regrets, Tanjiro holds his cold hands and comforts him 37 41.
When Shinobu Kocho discovers Nezuko, Tanjiro places himself between her sword and his sister. Kirishima intervenes and tells him to flee, but Kanao Tsuyuri intercepts him. Inosuke helps protect Nezuko’s box; during the struggle, Tanjiro’s attempted headbutt accidentally strikes Kanao’s chest, prompting frantic apologies 43 44 45 46 47.
Orders to capture the siblings alive bring them before the Hashira. Tanjiro watches helplessly as Sanemi tests Nezuko with his blood and then attempts to kill her despite her restraint. Kagaya Ubuyashiki stops the strike. Several days later, Tanjiro is recovering at the Butterfly Mansion with his companions 47 48 49 50 51.
Central Station Crisis
Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke are falsely named as Kirishima’s criminal accomplices on wanted posters. At Central Station, Tanjiro becomes caught in a nightmare attack, fighting a monstrous steel centipede before being forced to relive his family’s deaths 56 64 67.
Nezuko repeatedly burns him awake with her Blood Demon Art. Tanjiro locates the giant eye sustaining the nightmare network and attacks it with Waterfall Basin, leaving his blade embedded in the eye. He then navigates controlled civilians without his sword while his companions clear a route for him 68 69 70 71.
Tanjiro later joins the coordinated attack on the remaining flesh-covered trains and helps rescue passengers from the wreckage. Afterward, he resumes rehabilitation training at the Butterfly Mansion 72 73 79.
Yoshiwara and the Swordsmith Village
Tanjiro and Inosuke confront Daki in Yoshiwara. Despite Tanjiro switching to Sun Breathing, her strengthening sashes overwhelm them. Following Kirishima’s destruction of Upper Rank Six, Kakushi rescuers find both swordsmen wounded but alive and arrange emergency treatment before transporting them toward the Swordsmith Village 87 88 95.
At the village, Kirishima borrows Tanjiro’s newly acquired Nichirin Blade to spar with Muichiro Tokito. Tanjiro watches in astonishment, unable to follow their full speed. Later, he joins Muichiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke against the demons Kirishima leaves for them to fight during Hantengu’s attack 102 103 109.
Infinity Castle and Nezuko’s Recovery
Tanjiro participates in the coordinated assault against Doma alongside the Hashira and other young swordsmen. After Doma’s defeat, he notices Kirishima’s absence and joins the search, recognizing Kirishima’s blade energy and Muzan’s blood near the disturbance shaking the Infinity Castle 117 118.
Following Muzan’s destruction, Tamayo and Shinobu’s reversal drug eliminates Nezuko’s demon cells. Tanjiro embraces his restored human sister in tears, fulfilling the goal that drove his training and service in the Corps 123.
Appearance
- Hair and eyes: Dark-red hair and dark-red eyes 41 45 47.
- Forehead marking: Introduced with a faint forehead scar; later identified by a flame-shaped scar on the left side. The Rui battle also describes it as a flame-shaped Demon Slayer Mark, without documenting an awakening or its effects 2 37 47.
- Earrings: Distinctive sun-disc earrings, later called Nichirin Hanafuda Earrings 2 40.
- Clothing: Initially wears a heavily patched yellow haori; during the Final Selection, his haori is described as light-blue and checkered. He receives a Corps uniform after passing 2 16 18.
Personality
Tanjiro is gentle, earnest, and protective. He remains convinced that Nezuko retains her humanity, but accepts responsibility for the danger she could pose. His desire to restore her humanity takes priority over revenge, although Muzan’s role in his family’s deaths remains a source of intense anger 2 3 4 41.
His compassion extends to demons without erasing his opposition to their actions. He condemns Rui’s coercive imitation of family, then responds with empathy when Rui recognizes what he has lost. Tanjiro’s anger toward Muzan gives way to concern for Rui’s suffering rather than hostility toward the remorseful demon 37 41.
He is persistent and receptive to correction. Rather than abandoning training after repeated failures, he adjusts his technique, reflects on defeats, and works toward independence from Kirishima. His formal gratitude and frantic apologies after the accident with Kanao also show his politeness and sensitivity to others 6 8 9 46 47.
Abilities & Skills
Water Breathing
Tanjiro’s principal documented sword style, taught by Urokodaki and refined through Kirishima’s sparring 6 8.
| Form | Documented application |
|---|---|
| First Form: Water Surface Slash | Splits the training boulder and later attempts to cut Rui’s threads 8 37. |
| Second Form: Water Wheel | Delivers a rotating slash against a steel centipede’s leg joint within the nightmare 64. |
| Third Form: Flowing Dance / Flowing Dance Movement | Combines evasive footwork with flowing cuts against Rui’s threads, the nightmare centipede, and Daki’s sashes 37 64 87. |
| Fourth Form: Striking Tide | Instinctively blocks a sudden attack from behind during the nightmare assault 64. |
| Sixth Form: Twisting Whirlpool | Uses a spinning defense to deflect attacks closing in from several directions 64. |
| Seventh Form: Drop Ripple Thrust | Precisely strikes the joints of attacking metal tentacles 64. |
| Eighth Form: Waterfall Basin | Attacks the giant eye sustaining Central Station’s nightmare network 68 69. |
- Mobility: Uses Water Breathing footwork to weave through controlled crowds and climb toward the station dome 70 71.
- Limits: Rui’s threads overwhelm his defense; the nightmare centipede’s hard joints resist Water Wheel 37 64.
Sun Breathing / Hinokami Kagura
Tanjiro switches to Sun Breathing during his battle with Daki 88.
- Blue Heaven: Meets Daki’s sashes head-on with a flame-covered Nichirin Blade 88.
- Limit: The technique does not prevent Daki’s strengthening attacks from overwhelming him and Inosuke 88.
Enhanced Sense of Smell
Tanjiro uses scent to detect threats, track demonic activity, and perceive emotional states 41 45 86.
- Detects blood before entering the temple 2.
- Smells Rui’s sorrow, regret, and pain after his change of heart 41.
- Senses Kanao’s killing intent and the wisteria poison on her blade 45 46.
- Distinguishes fear, evacuation activity, and a demon’s blood-heavy scent in Yoshiwara 86.
- Recognizes traces associated with Kirishima’s power and later detects Muzan’s blood near the Infinity Castle battle 96 118.
Close-Quarters Combat
Tanjiro receives hand-to-hand instruction from Urokodaki and develops coordinated strength application under Kirishima 6.
- Uses unarmed blocks and kicks to evade controlled civilians when separated from his sword 69.
- Attempts a headbutt when Kanao’s speed prevents him from defending Nezuko conventionally 46.
- Limit: Losing his Nichirin Blade significantly reduces his effectiveness 69.
