Background / History

Earth and transmigration

Chen Yu was a civil engineer on twenty-first-century Earth who died suddenly while working overtime on a project. His soul entered the body of an eighteen-year-old orphan with the same name in the world of the Pirate King. The orphan had survived through wandering, theft, and begging before dying from hunger and illness in a Bluestone Town alley 1.

The Pokémon Template Bestowal System restored his body before he could die again. Shortly afterward, Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei offered him food. He persuaded them to leave town with him, then bestowed legendary Pokémon templates upon them when Wang Wu and his thugs blocked their escape 1.

Peach Blossom Spring

After escaping, Chen Yu explained his power through a partly fabricated Devil Fruit story and proposed building a country that protected ordinary people. The four pledged to share life and death, later formalizing their sworn brotherhood in Peach Blossom Spring with Chen Yu as eldest brother 2 3.

Chen Yu organized farming, recruitment, defenses, and coordinated training. Initially one of the group’s weakest fighters, he learned combat fundamentals from Guan Yu and Zhao Yun while developing Life Creation. Their defeat of the Water Ghost Gang supplied weapons, money, and intelligence for the settlement’s growth 4 6 7.

He subsequently recruited Huang Zhong and Guo Jia. Rather than immediately fighting Gan Ning’s naval detachment, he accepted a plan to demonstrate strength through contests and turn a potential enemy into an ally. Chen Yu personally defeated Gan Ning in their match 10 11 12 15.

Establishment of Hua Country

As Peach Blossom Spring expanded, Chen Yu combined military pressure with diplomacy and promises of lighter taxes, land, and housing. He approved Guo Jia’s covert airborne assault on Yujing to avoid the losses of a frontal siege 21 43.

After Yujing fell, he abolished the Flower Country name and established Hua. His government incorporated surrendered officials according to their abilities, provided they obeyed the new laws and served their communities. Hua Country eventually unified the former Flower Country, and Chen Yu formally ascended the throne as King of Hua 45 50 53 54 64.

At the Reverie, he refused demands to disband his army and accept Navy control. Hua Country obtained the standing formerly held by Flower Country, although his proposed West Blue Free Trade Zone was blocked. He also established preliminary intelligence cooperation with the Revolutionary Army 68.

West Blue conquest and imperial rule

Chen Yu strengthened the state through advanced shipbuilding, administrative recruitment, and further power bestowals. His Soaring Dragon Plan established a Royal Shipbuilding Bureau and pursued new propulsion, alloys, Seastone plating, and naval weapons 73 74 83 98.

After unifying West Blue, he initially postponed demands to proclaim himself emperor because the World Government was preparing an offensive. Following Hua Country’s victory, he appointed Fujitora Issho to oversee justice and official conduct, ordered reconstruction, and prepared an imperial ceremony. At that ceremony, he proclaimed himself the Kaiyuan Martial Emperor, establishing the Dark Bird era 126 161 162.

One year after the Paramount War, a later founding ceremony proclaimed the Hua Empire, with Chang’an as its capital and Haiyuan as its era name. By then, his state had united the Four Blues and fielded nine Admiral-level combatants. The Five Elders designated it their highest-level threat 278 279.

Grand Line and New World campaigns

Chen Yu married Vivi as part of Alabasta’s incorporation and personally reassured her about her place in the empire. He then inspected Sky Island’s administration, defenses, Dial research, and Poneglyph discoveries 204 205.

He allowed the Straw Hat Pirates room to act, regarding Luffy as both an admirable adventurer and a useful disruptive force against the World Government. He also recruited Rob Lucci and five fellow Cipher Pol No. 9 agents into the Wind-Listening Guard after demonstrating his power and criticizing the government’s abandonment of them 205 207 233.

After the conquest of Wano, Chen Yu rewarded Lü Bu and Ma Chao, ordered Kaido’s public execution, and imprisoned Yamato when she defended Wano. He then directed the campaign against Totto Land. At Hachinosu, he personally defeated Blackbeard, renamed the island Justice Island, and promised freed slaves land, homes, and an end to slavery 308 323.

Defeat of Imu

At the Empty Throne, Chen Yu confronted Imu as the opposing embodiment of creation and order. He overcame Imu’s void powers and World Tree transformation, destroyed an attempt to reset the world, and killed Imu with Creation Judgment. He then took control of the world’s laws 412.

Afterward, he understood the reason for his transmigration and the appearance of the Three Kingdoms generals. His divine consciousness reached through the world’s barriers toward their original historical universe 413.

Appearance

• Early appearance: Thin, visibly malnourished, filthy, and dressed in ragged clothing. The system restores his health without immediately removing these outward signs of deprivation 1.
• Later appearance: Tall and straight-backed, with handsome features and deep, imposing eyes 206 278.

Personality

Chen Yu’s original ambition is rooted in his experience of helplessness and the suffering around him. He seeks a country where the weak are protected, children are cared for, and strength operates within an ordered society. His later policies emphasize land access, lighter taxation, legal accountability, and equality regardless of race or station 2 43 161 285.

He is cautious about revealing his strength. He conceals the system behind a Devil Fruit explanation, withholds the precise origins of his generals’ abilities from Aokiji, and often lets subordinates fight while he remains in reserve. He listens to advisers and favors plans that achieve victory without unnecessary losses 2 29 43 52.

His benevolent ideals coexist with uncompromising authoritarianism. He threatens death for unauthorized military action, declares that those who defy him will die, and praises the Wano campaign report stating that everyone there was purged. His treatment of enemies therefore differs sharply from his promises of protection to subjects who accept his rule 63 161 308.

Privately, he preserves affection for his sworn brothers despite their official ranks. He invites Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei to share a meal and reminds Guan Yu to call him “Eldest Brother” rather than addressing him only as sovereign 119 205.
