Power Progression
| Stage / Realm / Level | Chapter | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Accomplished Haki-using spearman | 92 93 95 | Enters the Military Examination with formidable Armament Haki and exceptional Observation Haki. His sensory range reaches a hundred zhang during the semifinal. |
| Divine Might: Xiliang Blood Spear | 95 | Awakens an unyielding spear intent after three days fighting Dian Wei. His depleted Haki regathers as crimson energy and forms a giant blood-spear phantom; Guan Yu identifies this as a breakthrough of will. |
| Zekrom power acquired | 98 | Swallows the black, thunder-wreathed power bestowed during Chen Yu’s distribution of divine abilities, subsequently identified as the Zekrom Fruit. |
| Human-Beast Form demonstrated | 130 131 132 | Assumes an armored dragonman form against five Marine Headquarters Vice Admirals. Demonstrates a turbine tail, large lightning fields, rapid recovery, and regeneration. |
| Ideal Thunder manifested; higher threshold approached | 155 163 | Uses blue-black Ideal Thunder to protect his heart against Sengoku. After recovering, his aura is described as more concentrated and keen, although he had not yet reached Admiral level during their battle. |
| Post-Kizaru consolidation; Admiral-level recognition | 198 199 200 | Survives his clash with Kizaru and develops a deeper, more restrained lightning presence. His wounds heal, his new power stabilizes, and subsequent reports identify Hua Country as having produced another Admiral-level fighter. |
| Admiral-level power explicitly confirmed | 290 | His lightning is directly described as Admiral-level during the Sakura Kingdom intervention. |
| Power of Ideals awakening | 386 387 | Facing Maffey’s full light-dragon form, his conviction awakens Zekrom’s true Power of Ideals. His black lightning becomes blue-black Ideal Thunder, which he uses in the confrontation ending with Maffey’s death. |
- Ideal Thunder chronology: The name and blue-black energy appear during the N-7 and Alabasta arcs, while the later Maffey battle explicitly presents the Power of Ideals as an awakening of Zekrom’s true power 155 163 186 386.
Appearance
- Human appearance: A handsome young officer with heroic features, cold, hawklike eyes, and a lean, powerful physique 90 178 198.
- Usual clothing: Silver armor over white robes, sometimes accompanied by a scarlet cloak. During his South Blue service, he wears black armor 116 271 273.
- Final court attire: A lion helmet, beast-patterned belt, silver armor, and white robes 413.
- Electrical presence: Lightning frequently flickers around his body and eyes, leaving an ionized or ozone-like smell in the air 178 179.
- Human-Beast Form: Black or blue-black dragon scales, vertical pupils, dragon claws, wings, and a thick tail. An early transformation features natural armor with indigo markings and a turbine-like tail organ 130 185 385.
Personality
Ma Chao is proud, direct, and intensely competitive. He favors charging through an opponent’s defenses, but his aggression is supported by precise observation and technical spearwork. Defeat does not diminish his appetite for battle: after losing to Dian Wei, he eagerly accepts the prospect of another sparring match 93 102 385.
His determination can become dangerous stubbornness. Against Sengoku, he refuses to retreat despite recognizing the difference in strength, then attempts to continue fighting while critically injured. Nevertheless, he can acknowledge a superior opponent and express sincere gratitude, openly thanking Dian Wei for sparing his life 95 134 155.
His fiery temperament is particularly evident when civilians are threatened. During the Alabasta mission, he struggles to remain hidden while Baroque Works agents prepare to murder villagers. Away from battle, he is taciturn and practical, helping elderly residents, assisting reconstruction crews, and teaching soldiers. These actions turn the Alabastan public’s fear of the “Thunder God General” into affection 179 201.
He also develops a stronger appreciation for civil government. Zhao Yun’s explanation that conquest is only a means of protecting the people prompts his agreement; later, he praises Liu Bei’s relief work as more valuable than thousands of soldiers 271 280.
Abilities & Skills
Spearmanship and Mounted Combat
Ma Chao combines fast, flexible spearwork with powerful cavalry charges 92 113.
- Uses thrusts, sweeps, feints, and spiraling force to attack vital points and disrupt an opponent’s weapon control 92 93.
- Identifies gaps in an enemy’s Haki circulation rather than relying exclusively on brute force 95.
- Coordinates closely with his mount, evading attacks and driving through narrow openings while on horseback 93 95.
- Divine Might: Xiliang Blood Spear expresses his awakened spear intent through crimson Haki and a towering spear phantom 95.
Haki
His fighting style depends on both advanced perception and concentrated defensive power 95 197.
- Observation Haki: Detects hidden attacks, small muscular movements, airflow changes, concealed observers, and killing intent 92 93 185.
- Bioelectric tracking: Combines Observation Haki with Zekrom’s dragon eyes and a lightning-web perception field to track Maffey even during high-speed light movement 384.
- Armament Haki: Coats his spear and body; later combines it with lightning to form concentrated barriers and localized Armament: Thunder Armor 92 197 384.
- Ryuo spear attacks: Uses a lightning-infused Ryuo thrust to wound Crocodile 193.
- Limits: His defenses can be overwhelmed. Sengoku’s Conqueror’s Haki-coated finishing attack nearly kills him, while Maffey’s fastest laser trajectories are difficult for his Observation Haki to follow 155 385.
Zekrom Fruit
The Mythical Zoan Zekrom Fruit grants lightning control, dragon transformations, and enhanced physical resilience 130 132 134.
- Lightning manipulation: Channels electricity through his spear, releases storms and projectiles, and electrocutes enemies at close range 116 183 193.
- Controlled incapacitation: Adjusts his attacks to take prisoners rather than kill, including Baroque Works agents and more than three hundred pirates in South Blue 183 273.
- Flight and aerial footing: Uses dragon or lightning wings and creates electromagnetic footholds in midair 193 384 385.
- Electromagnetic acceleration: Reaches three times the speed of sound with Xiliang: Thunder Charge and alters his aerial balance to evade attacks 384 385.
- Recovery: His turbine tail gathers electrical energy, helping replenish stamina; his transformed body also regenerates rapidly 130 132.
- Precision at range: Remotely executes defiant nobles from more than a dozen li away without harming nearby innocents 201.
- Limits: Repeated high-output techniques require recovery, and his reserves are not inexhaustible. A prolonged fight against Maffey’s replenishing light energy threatens to exhaust him 132 386.
Lightning Domains and Named Techniques
- Thunder Domain / Mamaragan Sky Prison: Creates a spherical lightning field a hundred meters across. It slows incoming attacks and weakens a Vice Admiral’s all-out slash 131.
- Mamaragan Heavenly Prison: Incapacitates the agents attacking an Alabastan village 179.
- Secret Art: Thunder Dragon Descends: Breaks through Du Feld Shepherd’s resistance after Ma Chao counters his Sandstorm Domain 116.
- Thunder Halberd: Round Dance: A circular barrage that deflects Onigumo’s Eight-Sword Style 131.
- Divine Thunder-Commanding Tribulation: Concentrates his surrounding field and natural lightning into a near-white, full-body spear charge 133.
- Thunderfall Dragon Spear: The finishing technique used to kill Crocodile 193.
- Thunder God Descends: An all-out lightning assault used against Kizaru’s Yasakani no Magatama 197 198.
- Cross Inazuma: Overwhelms Zoro’s King of Hell, Three Dragon Flash and knocks him unconscious 305.
- Lightning Spear: Earthsplit: Sends electricity underground to create a defensive forest of lightning that intercepts Maffey’s lasers 385.
- Thunder Dragon: Sky-Sweeping Spear: Produces an expanding circular lightning attack covering the surrounding area 386.
- Thunder Dragon: Cloud-Piercing Spear: Releases a black lightning dragon; at close range, it strikes Maffey’s chin and throat and launches her skyward 385 386.
Power of Ideals
Zekrom’s deeper power responds to Ma Chao’s conviction rather than physical strength alone 386.
- Earlier Ideal Thunder carries the will to “transform the world through ideals” and helps pierce Crocodile’s awakened sandstorm after Zhou Yu creates an opening 186.
- During the Maffey battle, unwavering resolve transforms his black electricity into blue-black Ideal Thunder 386.
- His renewed lightning clashes with Maffey’s devastating laser before he closes in and kills her 387.
Military Command
- Leads twenty thousand Xiliang Iron Cavalry in the northwestern West Blue campaign 113.
- After the N-7 war, receives overall command of the former Western Liang forces and newly submitted elite cavalry 163.
- Oversees South Blue’s military affairs and maritime defenses alongside Zhao Yun’s administration 271.
- Shares command of the mobile forces with Lü Bu for the Totto Land campaign 308.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Bright Silver Spear / Silver Spear — His weapon during his introduction and the Military Examination; it breaks during the prolonged semifinal against Dian Wei 90 95.
- Tiger-Head Gilt Spear — His principal later weapon, repeatedly used to channel Haki and Zekrom lightning. Later passages also call his weapon the Dragon-Rider Spear or Wen Gold Tiger-Head Spear 113 116 384.
- Flying Sand — The magnificent warhorse ridden at the head of his Xiliang cavalry campaign 113.
- Thunder-patterned Dragon Scales armor — Awarded by Chen Yu after the N-7 war 163.
- Imperial tally — Granted with his appointment as General Who Pacifies the West 163.
History
Military Examination and Entry into Service
Ma Chao arrives at the gathering preceding the Military Examination on a snow-white horse, wearing silver armor and carrying a Bright Silver Spear. During the arena stage, he exchanges three hundred moves with Dian Wei before yielding that arena and taking another 90 92.
Their semifinal lasts three days and exhausts both men’s Haki. Ma Chao awakens Divine Might: Xiliang Blood Spear but still loses when Dian Wei stops his weapon above his head. He acknowledges that a lethal contest would have ended in his death. He subsequently receives Zekrom’s power and maintains a friendly competitive relationship with Dian Wei 95 98 102.
Northwestern West Blue Campaign
Chen Yu appoints him General Who Quells the Bandits and sends him northwest with the Xiliang Iron Cavalry to prevent the remaining kingdoms from coordinating with defeated enemy forces 113.
Ma Chao subdues five kingdoms in a single day. At Gray Rock, he counters Du Feld Shepherd’s Sandstorm Domain with his Thunder Domain and kills him with Thunder Dragon Descends. His campaign accepts twenty thousand surrendered soldiers and secures substantial supplies; he then orders three days of rest before the next advance 116.
N-7 War and Defeat by Sengoku
At N-7, Ma Chao fights five elite Marine Headquarters Vice Admirals: Doberman, Onigumo, Strawberry, Yamakaji, and Momonga. His later merit citation credits him with defeating all five 130 163.
Sengoku intervenes before Ma Chao can finish Momonga. Ma Chao refuses to withdraw but is progressively overwhelmed. Zhou Yu stabilizes his injuries with Sacred Fire, while Huang Zhong arrives to take over the battle. Ma Chao’s attempt to rejoin the fight exposes him to another devastating attack, forcing Zhou Yu to evacuate him 134 153 155.
Despite the defeat, Chen Yu recognizes the time his resistance bought for the army. He receives the offices of General Who Pacifies the West and Marquis of Huaili, command over additional cavalry, fifty thousand in gold, and new armor. Ma Chao vows to remember the defeat and repay Chen Yu with greater achievements 163.
Alabasta Intervention
Chen Yu selects Ma Chao to contact King Cobra, pairing him with Zhou Yu to balance his fiery temperament with strategic restraint. The two secretly investigate Baroque Works, rescue a threatened village, and uncover evidence beneath Rainbase 177 178 179 186.
After helping Vivi’s party escape with the evidence, they draw pursuit toward Yuba. Ma Chao eventually confronts and kills Crocodile there, declares Baroque Works dissolved, and demands the surviving agents’ surrender 187 193.
At Alubarna, he gains the advantage over Gion before Kizaru intervenes. Their clash leaves Ma Chao critically injured, but he survives, recovers, and consolidates new power. He then helps restore order and assists reconstruction, earning the population’s affection 196 197 198 199 200 201.
During this period, he also ends a restaurant fight involving the Straw Hats, Ace, and Smoker. He imprisons the troublemakers for three days and promises the owner double compensation for the damage 200.
Four Blues and Grand Line Expansion
Ma Chao and Zhao Yun break Bastille’s fortress defenses and help bring virtually all of South Blue under Hua control within four days. Ma Chao subsequently oversees the sea’s military security and suppresses surviving pirate groups 258 271 273.
He escorts Liu Bei’s inspection tour before joining Zhao Yun in Sakura Kingdom. There, he handles Wapol’s pirate forces while Zhao Yun kills Wapol; Dalton pledges the kingdom’s allegiance to the Hua Empire. Ma Chao later arrives with Imperial Guards following the failed Cipher Pol Aigis Zero assassination of Dalton 280 290 292.
Wano and Totto Land
During the Wano campaign, Ma Chao defeats Sanji and Zoro but spares both. He leaves Luffy to Lü Bu and searches the surrounding area for escapees 305.
Following Wano’s conquest and the recovery of Pluton-related materials, Chen Yu promotes Ma Chao and Lü Bu and assigns them command of the mobile forces for the Totto Land invasion. On Whole Cake Island, Katakuri surrenders the Royal Palace to Ma Chao to protect his family and civilians 308 314.
Mary Geoise and Final Office
Above Mary Geoise, Ma Chao battles Holy Knight Thatcherz Maffey, whose Light Dragon powers match his lightning in their initial exchanges. When she assumes her full dragon form, his conviction awakens Zekrom’s Power of Ideals. He ultimately kills her, and the final node of the Deep Sea Contract disintegrates from her body 384 385 386 387.
At the final gathering of Hua Country’s core ministers and commanders, Ma Chao holds the office of General of the Guards 413.
