Background / History
Huang Zhong was a battle-hardened veteran living in poverty in Bluestone Town when Zhao Yun discovered him. He had spent his resources seeking treatment for his chronically ill son, Huang Xu, while oppressive taxes worsened their circumstances. Despite his ragged clothing, he maintained his longbow carefully and retained the bearing of an accomplished warrior 9.
Chen Yu approached him after learning of his plight and identifying his exceptional compatibility with the Dialga template. Huang Zhong initially distrusted Peach Blossom Spring, assuming it was another bandit organization seeking to recruit him for plunder. Chen Yu’s offer to treat Huang Xu—and his demonstration of life-enhancing power—persuaded Huang Zhong to reconsider. He pledged his life in return for his son’s salvation, and his trust deepened when Chen Yu successfully suppressed Huang Xu’s symptoms 10 11 12.
Huang Zhong entered Peach Blossom Spring with his son and Guo Jia under Zhao Yun’s escort. Liu Bei helped stabilize Huang Xu, while the settlement’s orderly life and disciplined trainees dispelled Huang Zhong’s remaining doubts. Chen Yu then bestowed the Dialga template upon him; the system recorded his loyalty at 100%, described as unwavering 13.
Appearance
Huang Zhong is an elderly man with gray-white or white hair and beard, a straight back repeatedly compared to a pine, and a keen, eagle-like gaze. His clothing changes from poverty-stricken rags to military armor as his standing rises 9 51 89.
- Early appearance: Ragged clothes, a carefully maintained longbow, and thick calluses on his fingertips 9 10.
- Campaign armor: Black heavy armor at Rock Fortress; golden armor during his later Grand Line missions and the empire’s founding ceremony 111 234 278.
- Temporal manifestations: Blue ripples, distorted light, and a diamond-shaped forehead crest when releasing Dialga’s power 111.
- Human-Beast Form: A lean body with deep-blue, metallic-gray skin, pale-blue energy stripes, a silver-white pyramidal helmet, crimson eyes, and claw-armored arms. A cobalt-blue pentagonal diamond sits within his natural breastplate 155.
- Later features: Dark-gold dragon eyes with slowly turning gear patterns appear during his confrontation with Gunko 400.
Personality
Huang Zhong is proud, wary of exploitation, and unwilling to lend his abilities to indiscriminate robbery. His initial suspicion of Chen Yu comes from believing Peach Blossom Spring to be a bandit force, rather than from opposition to serving a worthy leader. Once convinced of Chen Yu’s benevolence, he becomes openly grateful and steadfastly loyal 11 13.
His devotion to family shapes several major decisions. He exhausts his wealth trying to save Huang Xu, takes pride in his son’s development, and becomes deeply protective of Bonney after adopting her. In battle, he remains composed under mockery and relies on timing and precision rather than anger. He is also willing to enter dangerous close combat immediately when an ally needs help 9 135 153 164 245.
Abilities & Skills
Temporal Perception and Prediction
Dialga’s power lets Huang Zhong perceive the flow of time and anticipate movement. Combined with Observation Haki, it develops from briefly reading an arrow’s trajectory into seeing future images 13 321.
- Predicts moving targets, wind changes, and the rocking of ships to refine his aim 13 47.
- Uses Dialga’s Foresight to calculate a fleeing pirate captain’s route through a forest 51.
- Reads past trajectories and several possible future paths of fate-guided bullets 136.
- Extends his battlefield awareness across dozens of nautical miles while observing Marineford 256 259.
- Trains under excessive gravity by calculating altered arrow trajectories and release timing 87.
Time Manipulation
Huang Zhong can slow, suspend, accelerate, and reverse temporal processes, applying these effects to enemies, projectiles, machinery, and living bodies 111 235 266.
- Time Lag Domain: Slows Rock Fortress’s defenders sufficiently for his archers to overwhelm them. Its range is limited, a weakness Barton identifies during the battle 111.
- Time Arrow: Slow Flow / Time Sense: Slow Current: Slows incoming bullets so he can read and counter their trajectories. One use affects bullets within ten meters 130 135.
- Time · Flow Rate · Tenfold Slowdown: Reduces time to one-tenth speed within a hundred-meter radius, disrupting the Blackbeard Pirates’ combined assault 264.
- Temporal aging: Stops cannon shells, then ages cannons into scrap and their operators into bones 111.
- Restoration: Repairs Bonney’s damaged ship and later reverses Kuma’s modifications while restoring his memories 235 266.
- Age-power suppression: Neutralizes Bonney’s Age-Age Fruit effects and returns her to her true age of ten 235.
- Concealment: Envelops his ship in temporal power to hide its presence near Marineford 251.
- Movement and recovery: Crosses several nautical miles through apparent gaps in time and recovers from exertion faster than ordinary people 153.
His temporal fields are not an automatic victory against powerful opponents. Sengoku’s spiritually charged Buddha attacks destabilize his slowed-time field, forcing him to rely on blade work and Haki 156.
Archery
Huang Zhong’s marksmanship predates his Dialga powers. His later style combines that foundation with temporal prediction, Haki coating, and arrows formed from energy or intent 9 13 42.
| Technique | Application |
|---|---|
| Metal Burst | An early time-infused arrow produces a localized temporal disturbance and blasts an irregular crater into a wooden target 13. |
| Setting Sun: Star-Piercing | Combines Observation Haki, concentrated Armament Haki, and temporal calculations in the attack against Han Dang’s flagship 47. |
| Setting Sun: Star-Chasing | Pins Wolf Mountain Fort’s commander to a gate through the shoulder blade, taking him out of the battle alive 51. |
| Setting Sun: Rainbow-Piercing | Threads an exceptionally long-range shot through forest gaps and pins a fleeing pirate captain by the calf 51. |
| Arrow of intent | Fires without a physical arrow, combining Conqueror’s Haki and temporal power. Its first demonstrated form has limited range 89. |
| Time Arrow: Causality Reversal | Kills Barton during the assault on Rock Fortress 111. |
| Time Arrow Soul-Subduing | Erodes the Rock Giant through immense temporal aging, destroys its core, and brings down Rock Fortress 111. |
| Armament Arrow: Volley | Uses nine Haki-coated arrows to split and neutralize dozens of incoming bullets 135. |
| Time Arrow: Instant Chain | Launches condensed energy arrows that intercept bullets, either accelerating them into metal vapor or slowing them until they fall 136. |
| Time Arrow: Return to the Void: Roar of Time | Opposes Manmaiya Diliya’s fate-decreed killing shot with an arrow invoking time’s “end” 136. |
| Time Arrow: Instant | Sends an arrow before Sengoku almost immediately after release 153. |
| Cloud-Piercing Arrow: Time Stasis | Freezes Van Augur’s local time, preventing escape before the fatal arrow strikes 321. |
| Time Lock: Sealing Arrow | Gathers temporal power into an arrow intended to lock its target at the moment of impact; prepared against Gunko’s strongest attack 402. |
Saber Mastery
Huang Zhong possesses a lifetime of saber experience and is formidable at close range despite his reputation as an archer. Manmaiya Diliya’s attempt to exploit a presumed melee weakness ends with her disarmed and her weapon hand severed 137 157.
- Time Blade: Instant Eternity: Combines Armament Haki and temporal power in a blade arc that pulverizes Diliya’s body. In Human-Beast Form, he also uses it to force Sengoku into a full-strength response 137 155.
- Time Blade: Tracing the Flow: Cuts temporal causal nodes, separating the causes and effects forcibly joined by Diliya’s fate-based attacks 137.
- Time-Reversing Hakai: Breaks Diliya’s fate defense and staff, severs her existence, and prevents her regeneration from saving her 137.
- Time Blade: Return to the Void: Merges temporal power with Conqueror’s Haki coating against Sengoku 156.
- Time Blade · Hundred-Stream Slash: Delivers over a hundred slashes in an instant against the weakest temporal points of Sengoku’s energy barrage. The technique carries an enormous physical cost 157.
- Time · Reverse Flow Slash: Wounds Blackbeard’s nine elite crewmates with a single saber sweep inside a slowed-time field 264.
Haki
Huang Zhong uses all three demonstrated forms of Haki alongside Dialga’s abilities 47 89 156.
- Observation Haki: Locates commanders, surveys battlefields, and combines with temporal perception to predict enemy attacks 47 135 321.
- Armament Haki: Coats arrows, fists, and blades. He shatters a pursuing bullet with a coated punch and later uses golden Imperial Armament on his arrows 136 321.
- Conqueror’s Haki: Awakens through his accumulated conviction and Zhao Yun’s example; later applies coating to his saber 89 156.
- Combined pressure: Releases a presence mixing Conqueror’s Haki and Dialga’s power during Water 7’s accession, alarming the crowd and the Straw Hat Pirates 231.
Command and Instruction
Huang Zhong organizes long-range troops and teaches archers to improve anticipation and accuracy. He cannot awaken temporal powers in his students, but incorporates the principles of his own perception into their training 14.
- Establishes Peach Blossom Spring’s sniper squad and later commands the Sharpshooter Battalion 14 107.
- Uses precision fire to disable rigging, eliminate cannon crews, and prevent enemy landings while deliberately concealing his full strength 29.
- Trains Huang Xu in the family’s martial traditions; Chen Yu specifically encourages further saber instruction under him 164 201.
- Coordinates with Lü Bu and Zhao Yun with minimal discussion, reflecting their long experience fighting together 401.
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Iron-Backed Bow: A longstanding weapon described as having accompanied him for decades; used throughout the N-7 fighting 135 153 157.
- Numinous Treasure Bow: During its forging, he engraves the intent of “eternity in an instant” into the wooden bow blank using Dialga’s power 56.
- Precious Carved Bow: Used for his Conqueror’s Haki breakthrough and the killing shot against Van Augur 89 321.
- Sunset Bow / Setting Sun: A named great bow carried during the Marineford mission and later battles; its temporal patterns illuminate when he prepares the Sealing Arrow 256 278 400 402.
- Ding Tang Saber: Used against the Blackbeard Pirates and to wound Kizaru during his departure from Marineford 264 266.
- Seastone-coated arrowheads: Developed in a secret small production run for his Sharpshooter Battalion 89.
- Imperial tally: Granted with his northern-frontier command 163.
- “Pillar of the Nation” plaque: Personally inscribed by Chen Yu and awarded alongside eighty thousand in gold 163.
- Dialga Hourglass of Time: A replica ceremonial object awarded for his service, rather than a demonstrated combat item 163.
