Background / History
Family and Wartime Experience
Fugaku lived through three Shinobi World Wars and witnessed numerous Uchiha deaths. He had already awakened the Mangekyō Sharingan before Zongyan discovered it, but kept its existence deeply concealed 11.
Unlike the original course of events remembered by Zongyan, Fugaku did not take young Itachi to the front during the Third Shinobi World War. Zongyan identifies this difference as an important reason for Itachi’s changed upbringing 4.
Fugaku and Mikoto’s children are Itachi, Zongyan, and Sasuke, with Zongyan occupying the position of their second son rather than replacing Sasuke. Fugaku personally names Sasuke after his birth. During the subsequent Nine-Tails attack, he orders the boys to remain indoors and rushes to the front lines 3 5 6.
Protecting the Bloodline Altar
Zongyan first reveals the Bloodline Altar to Fugaku after a family dinner. Its aura instinctively provokes Fugaku into activating his Mangekyō Sharingan. After sensing its effects himself, Fugaku accepts that it can nourish bloodlines and enable awakenings without the emotional trauma normally associated with the Sharingan 11.
Recognizing both its value and its danger, Fugaku initially restricts knowledge of the altar to himself and Zongyan. He excludes even Itachi because his Anbu service exposes him to surveillance. Fugaku arranges secure underground storage and promises clan-funded minerals for Zongyan’s awakenings through the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 12.
After Root operatives attack Zongyan, Fugaku takes him to the altar and supplies five tons of rough iron ingots from the clan treasury for his first purification. He subsequently recruits four specialist Uchiha jōnin to train Zongyan in close combat, swordsmanship, ninjutsu, and genjutsu 16 17 18.
Building a Loyal Faction
Fugaku originally sought to preserve the balance between Konoha and the Uchiha through negotiation. Growing suppression by the village leadership, combined with the altar’s potential, gradually pushes him toward the Radical Faction. He begins allocating awakenings to capable, loyal clansmen to strengthen both the clan and his own support base 22.
When Zongyan chooses to join the Military Police Force, Fugaku provides a list of these supporters and intends to place them under his son’s command. He appoints Zongyan captain of a four-person arrest squad under Uchiha Yashiro, with personally selected officers 22 23.
Fugaku also anticipates danger beyond the village’s rules. When a Hokage-issued mission sends Zongyan outside Konoha, he secretly assigns two elite jōnin to follow the squad as protection 27.
Clan Purge and Contribution System
Zongyan returns with Kawano Shinji, whose memories contain evidence of Root abducting Uchiha for human experimentation. Fugaku brings the matter before a clan meeting and has Yashiro, Tekka, and Inabi verify the memories through their Sharingan 33 34.
At the meeting, Fugaku openly explains that his earlier restraint reflected insufficient strength, not approval of Konoha’s actions. Before revealing the altar, he attacks Shisui while Zongyan’s group restrains other suspected informants. Several clansmen assist Fugaku in preventing Shisui’s escape, and Shisui’s chakra is sealed 34.
Fugaku and Zongyan then disclose the altar to the remaining loyal jōnin. To manage its limited monthly awakening opportunity, Fugaku and the elders adopt Zongyan’s contribution-point proposal. Fugaku formally launches the system, which allows clan service and donated resources to be exchanged for benefits; the storehouse’s reserves rise by fifty percent after the first day’s exchanges 35 36 37.
Expansion Beyond Konoha
Fugaku approves Zongyan’s proposal to establish a concealed resource base in the Land of Rice Fields. The plan calls for secretly controlling the country, mining and processing iron, assigning reliable clansmen under cover of reported deaths, and transporting materials through Reverse Summoning. Fugaku briefs the elders and stresses the need for secrecy 39.
When Zongyan later reveals the Multiverse Portal, Fugaku prevents Itachi from pressing him about its origins. He assesses the dangers and opportunities of the Demon Slayer World, then agrees to accompany his sons after leaving a letter for Mikoto and the elders 48 49.
The three enter a mountain forest in the other world. Fugaku and Itachi immediately notice the absence of chakra in their surroundings; Fugaku examines the soil while struggling to accept that they have truly crossed into another world 50.
Appearance
- Build and bearing: Tall and straight-backed, with a physique honed by years on the battlefield 4 18.
- Expression: Usually stern, composed, and difficult to read; his tension visibly eases in the family courtyard 4.
- Eyes: His activated Mangekyō Sharingan displays intricate rotating patterns and an oppressive scarlet presence 11.
Personality
Fugaku’s severe public manner conceals strong attachment to his family. He becomes openly anxious during Mikoto’s labor, smiles with relief after the successful delivery, and shows warm approval when Itachi promises to protect his brothers. He also notices Zongyan’s exhaustion immediately after the Root attack and becomes furious upon learning what happened 4 5 16.
As clan head, he is cautious rather than blindly conciliatory. He explains that openly breaking with Konoha without evidence or sufficient strength would gamble hundreds of lives. Once the altar offers a credible path to power, he becomes willing to organize resistance and detain clansmen he believes would expose its secrets 34 35.
He respects Zongyan’s judgment and does not demand explanations for every extraordinary discovery. His support is practical: funding awakenings, arranging strict instruction, providing loyal personnel, and protecting sensitive information 12 18 22 48.
