Personality

Itachi is an attentive, protective older brother. As a child, he waited beside Zongyan’s bed, slowed his walking pace for him, patiently taught him to speak, and followed him around to prevent accidents. He welcomed Sasuke with the same affection and promised to protect both younger brothers 4 5 6.

His outward restraint conceals a firm commitment to his family and clan. He can endure Hiruzen’s loyalty tests without betraying his impatience or anger, yet reacts decisively when Zongyan is threatened. His concern also extends to Shisui: despite their opposing loyalties, he seeks to persuade his imprisoned friend rather than abandon him 15 17 46 48.

History

Childhood and Zongyan’s Influence

Zongyan’s birth changes Itachi’s childhood. Unlike the trajectory Zongyan remembers from the original story, Fugaku does not take Itachi to the Third Shinobi World War’s front lines at four. By Konoha Year 48, six-year-old Itachi has instead become a loving older brother whose daily life centers on his family 3 4.

Zongyan strengthens that attachment by taking Itachi around the clan grounds to visit other households. These encounters make the Uchiha’s ordinary lives familiar to him, while Zongyan’s questions about the village’s hostility begin unsettling his assumptions about Konoha 4.

When Mikoto goes into labor with Sasuke, Itachi carries Zongyan to fetch Granny Chiyo. After the birth, he carefully holds the newborn and promises to protect both brothers 5.

Nine-Tails’ Rampage

During the Nine-Tails’ attack, Itachi holds Zongyan protectively while Fugaku leaves to respond. The subsequent news of Minato and Kushina’s deaths leaves him trembling and bewildered 6.

Zongyan uses the moment to urge him to trust his family above outside institutions and relationships. Itachi clasps his brother’s hand and promises to remember. By his Anbu years, putting family and clan first has become his guiding principle 6 7.

Anbu Service and the Root Attack

After graduating from the Academy in one year, Itachi joins the Anbu. Konoha’s leaders believe he is their informant inside the Uchiha, but he supplies them with harmless reports while secretly forwarding their anti-Uchiha plans to Fugaku 7.

When Root operatives attack six-year-old Zongyan, Itachi senses his brother’s chakra and rushes to intervene. He defeats the remaining attackers with Phoenix Flower Jutsu, then kills the conscious survivor after the man invokes Danzo’s orders and the leadership’s authorization 15.

Hiruzen subsequently summons him, promises to restrain Danzo, and tests whether he places Konoha or the Uchiha first. Itachi delivers the village-first answer Hiruzen wants while privately resenting the lack of accountability 16 17.

His protective role continues beyond the incident. When Zongyan receives a dangerous border assignment arranged by Danzo, Itachi requests leave from the Anbu and prepares to accompany him. Zongyan ultimately declines because Fugaku has already arranged covert protection 27 28.

Confrontation with Shisui

After returning from an Anbu rotation, Itachi asks to visit the imprisoned Shisui. He reveals that his service has always been intended to gather intelligence and secure breathing room for the Uchiha, not to pledge allegiance to Hiruzen 46.

Shisui discloses his plan to use Kotoamatsukami to rewrite Fugaku’s will and prevent a coup. Itachi argues that manipulating his father would not remove the persecution driving the clan’s resistance. He challenges Shisui’s refusal to consider using the same technique on Hiruzen and Danzo 47.

The confrontation leaves Shisui questioning his convictions, but does not secure his allegiance. Itachi agrees to continue speaking with him, both out of friendship and because Zongyan hopes to make Kotoamatsukami an asset for the clan 48.

Expedition to the Demon Slayer World

Zongyan reveals his access to another world and proposes using its resources to strengthen the Uchiha. Itachi recognizes that Sharingan genjutsu could allow them to control ordinary rulers without conventional warfare 48 49.

The proposed capture of Muzan depends on Shisui’s Kotoamatsukami rather than Itachi’s own abilities. Itachi points out that Shisui’s unresolved loyalty is the plan’s immediate obstacle and agrees to keep trying to persuade him 49.

Itachi, Fugaku, and Zongyan enter the other world at Mount Fujikasane. They split up to target different countries’ rulers, with a plan to meet again after one month and demand twenty percent of each country’s iron output every three months 50.

In Japan, Itachi uses genjutsu on the woodcutter Yamada Tarō to acquire local language, history, geography, and political information. He also learns about demons, Nichirin Blades, and the secret Demon Slayer Corps. No ruler has yet been shown falling under his control 50.
