Background / History

Uchiha Survivor and Team 7

Sasuke survives the Uchiha massacre and grows up determined to kill his older brother, Itachi. He was six when the massacre occurred and remembers little of the political conflict preceding it. His formerly lively disposition gives way to withdrawal and an overriding fixation on revenge 12 97 106.

Toneri first encounters Sasuke beside Naruto near a river and later invites both boys to become his opponents. Sasuke dismisses the proposal, caring only about becoming strong enough to avenge his clan. Five years later, he recognizes Toneri while accompanying Naruto and Sakura as part of Team 7 10 11 67.

Despite his aloofness, Sasuke forms a particularly strong bond with Naruto. During Team 7’s first mission outside the village, he shields an injured Naruto from Haku’s attack with his own body and loses consciousness 151.

Defection to Orochimaru

At twelve, Sasuke becomes increasingly frustrated with his progress. Toneri tells him that remaining in Konoha will not make him strong enough to defeat Itachi and recommends Orochimaru as a teacher. He openly explains the danger: Orochimaru wants Sasuke as his next vessel, but will train him during the three years before his next reincarnation. Sasuke knowingly accepts the gamble 97.

After Toneri strengthens his Sharingan, Sasuke leaves with the Sound Four. Naruto catches him at the Valley of the End, where Sasuke rejects his pleas to return. Their battle leaves Naruto gravely wounded and unconscious; Sasuke departs despite his conflicted feelings toward his closest friend 98 100 101.

Over the following three years, Sasuke trains relentlessly under Orochimaru. Their nominal master–student relationship is an exchange in which each understands the other’s intentions: Orochimaru supplies power to obtain Sasuke’s body, while Sasuke waits for an opportunity to strike. Sasuke eventually absorbs him within the reincarnation barrier 105 106 133.

Learning the Truth About Itachi

Toneri reveals the Uchiha’s planned rebellion and explains that Konoha’s leadership coerced Itachi into massacring the clan. He also tells Sasuke that Itachi secured protection for him, is terminally ill, and intends to leave him his eyes. These revelations destroy the purpose that had sustained Sasuke’s training 107.

Toneri deliberately guides Sasuke’s reaction. By implying that Konoha helped Itachi carry out the massacre without identifying Obito’s role, he encourages Sasuke to direct his resentment toward the village. Sasuke nevertheless becomes more immediately concerned with finding and questioning Itachi than with attacking Konoha 107 122.

At the Uchiha secret hideout, Sasuke confronts his brother with the truth and promises to restore the clan without allowing Itachi to die disgraced. Itachi demands that he prove his convictions in battle. Sasuke breaks Tsukuyomi, contests Itachi in close combat and Fire Release, and ultimately unleashes Kirin 130 131 132.

The battle also draws out the Orochimaru concealed within Sasuke. Itachi acts to remove that threat before dying in front of his younger brother. Sasuke collapses from chakra exhaustion, the loss of his Cursed Seal, and the shock of Itachi’s death; the emotional trauma awakens his Mangekyō Sharingan 133 137.

Joining Akatsuki and Attacking Konoha

Sasuke asks Toneri for help avenging the Uchiha and clearing Itachi’s name. He joins Akatsuki, accepts his brother’s Vermilion Bird ring, and agrees to receive Itachi’s eyes after familiarizing himself with his own Mangekyō abilities. Toneri introduces Tsunade as an ally who likewise seeks revenge against Konoha’s leadership 137.

After his Eternal Eyes finish developing, Sasuke returns to Konoha with Toneri, Tsunade, and Hanabi. His principal target is Danzo. To draw out the village’s senior ninja, he attacks ANBU with an armored Susanoo, also endangering civilians. He rejects Kakashi’s appeals and demands Danzo’s location 147 148.

Naruto intervenes, but Sasuke refuses to abandon his revenge. His Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan initially gives him an overwhelming advantage against Naruto’s Sage Mode, though Naruto subsequently enters Kurama Mode. Sasuke also hypnotizes Kakashi and attempts to reclaim his transplanted Sharingan as Uchiha property 151 152 153 154.

Against Danzo, Sasuke recognizes Izanagi from his repeated returns from death and the presence of Sharingan. He uses genjutsu to create an opening, severs Danzo’s right arm, destroys his right-eye Sharingan, and stabs his heart. Danzo then activates the Reverse Four Symbols Seal and dies. Sasuke subsequently manifests Perfect Susanoo 158 159.

Fourth Shinobi World War and Later Life

Sasuke supports Akatsuki’s plan to impose peace through overwhelming force, arguing that the organization will shoulder the world’s hatred and end war. He later accepts Kisame’s proposal to become his partner 157 160.

Their battlefield opponents include the reincarnated Itachi and the Third Raikage. Sasuke uses Perfect Susanoo to shatter Itachi’s red Susanoo, ending a confrontation he never wanted to repeat. Before being sealed, Itachi asks him to help Kisame and bring peace to the continent; Sasuke promises not to disappoint him 164 168 169.

Toneri later awakens Sasuke’s Indra chakra and grants him the Six-Tomoe Rinnegan as Hagoromo empowers Naruto. Near the war’s end, Sasuke stands alongside Quxian and Yakumo against Naruto 180 188.

By the celebration of Kurenai’s pregnancy, Sasuke and Naruto are again comfortable teasing each other. Sasuke helps bring their Konoha acquaintances through a spatial portal to the City of Dawn, while Naruto reminds him of his responsibility to continue the Uchiha Clan 193.

Appearance

  • Eyes: Naturally dark; turn scarlet when the Sharingan is active 97 130.
  • Mangekyō pattern: A six-pointed star, later combined with Itachi’s pinwheel pattern in the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 137 147.
  • Rinnegan: His left eye becomes purple with six black tomoe after Toneri’s intervention 180.
  • Clothing: Wears a white kimono in Otogakure and later adopts Akatsuki’s cloak and Vermilion Bird ring 122 137.
  • Growth and bearing: Becomes noticeably taller during his three years away from Konoha, with a colder demeanor and an indifferent gaze concealing viciousness 105.
  • Chakra: His Susanoo and increasingly ominous chakra are deep purple 148 151 159.

Personality

Sasuke is reserved, proud, and usually calculating. He remains composed in most situations, but matters involving Itachi repeatedly destabilize him. His decision to study under Orochimaru is deliberate rather than uninformed: he understands the threat to his body and considers the opportunity worth the risk 97 106.

His cold exterior conceals a strong attachment to personal bonds. He protects Naruto at great risk, is moved enough to thank Toneri for strengthening his eyes, and values family, friendship, and the Uchiha’s honor above broader political ideals. Learning Itachi’s motives does not make him accept his brother’s choices; he understands the sacrifice but rejects a peace built on Itachi’s suffering 98 137 148 151.

After Itachi’s death, grief hardens into vengeance. Sasuke becomes willing to endanger civilians and attack former acquaintances, whom he refuses to acknowledge as comrades. Naruto remains an exception: Sasuke still privately recognizes him as a friend and brother, even while treating him as an enemy on the battlefield 148 151 152.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan and Genjutsu

Sasuke combines strong ocular perception with practiced illusion techniques.

  • Tracks multiple attackers and anticipates their routes with the Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan 150.
  • Breaks Itachi’s Tsukuyomi before awakening his own Mangekyō Sharingan 131.
  • Hypnotizes Kakashi using his Eternal Eyes 154.
  • Catches Danzo in genjutsu to disable the Sharingan sustaining his survival strategy 158.
  • Limitation: Toneri initially refuses to awaken his Mangekyō artificially because excessive use could blind him before he obtains the Eternal Eyes 97.

Susanoo

His deep-purple Susanoo develops from skeletal protection to an armored upper body and finally Perfect Susanoo.

  • Defense: Instantly manifests a skeletal form to block Naruto’s chakra tail, though the impact still knocks him back 153.
  • Light blades: Destroys ANBU, cuts through a Spiraling Shuriken, and cleaves apart an advancing inferno 148 152 156.
  • Bow and arrows: Fires fast, destructive chakra arrows; one pierces Neji’s Eight Trigrams Vacuum Palm without being slowed 150 152.
  • Perfect Susanoo: Stands nearly a hundred meters tall and overwhelms Itachi’s Susanoo in direct combat 159 168.

Amaterasu and Blaze Release

His Mangekyō abilities pair Amaterasu’s black flames with Kagutsuchi’s control over their shape 132.

  • Flame Thunder God: Erupts black flames outward around himself to repel surrounding attackers 150.
  • Kagutsuchi: Coats the Kusanagi Sword in black fire and launches a flaming slash 155.
  • Defensive shaping: Raises a wall of Amaterasu that envelops and consumes Naruto’s Spiraling Shuriken 157.
  • Burns Danzo’s severed arm to ashes, destroying the Sharingan it carries 158.

Lightning Release and Swordsmanship

Sasuke develops Lightning Release for both close combat and large-scale attacks.

  • Chidori: Uses it in his decisive clash with Naruto at the Valley of the End 100.
  • Chidori Blade: Channels Chidori through objects to enhance cutting power 106.
  • Lightning-enhanced swordplay: Wields the Kusanagi Sword against Danzo with lightning surrounding its blade 156.
  • Kirin: Guides natural lightning with Chidori to produce an S-rank attack with a wide range, extreme speed, and relatively low chakra expenditure 132.
  • Kirin’s limitation: Requires suitable atmospheric conditions and cannot be used effectively on every battlefield 132.

Fire Release and Close Combat

  • Incinerates a practice target with Fire Release while training in Konoha 97.
  • Pushes back the terminally ill Itachi’s Great Fireball during their ninjutsu contest 131.
  • Demonstrates fluid taijutsu, blade combat, and the Uchiha Clan’s renowned ninja-tool manipulation against Itachi 131.

Cursed Seal and Orochimaru’s Abilities

  • Uses the Cursed Seal of Heaven, including Stage Two, as a major source of strength before his Mangekyō awakening 100 122.
  • Gains Orochimaru’s abilities and strengthens his foundation by absorbing him 122 133.
  • Hidden danger: Orochimaru survives inside him and emerges during the battle with Itachi 133.
  • Loss: No longer possesses the Cursed Seal after that confrontation and must adapt to fighting without it 137.

Six-Tomoe Rinnegan

  • Awakens in his left eye through Toneri’s Yin-Yang Release and stimulation of Indra’s chakra 180.
  • Its ocular power is described as stronger than an ordinary Rinnegan; his single eye is no weaker than an ordinary pair 180.

Medical Ninjutsu

  • Uses medical ninjutsu to heal Kakashi’s injuries after hypnotizing him 154.

Equipment / Weapons / Items

  • Kusanagi Sword — Used for swordsmanship, lightning-enhanced attacks, and Kagutsuchi-coated slashes 149 155 156.
  • Vermilion Bird ring — Itachi’s former Akatsuki ring; Sasuke accepts it as both a position in the organization and a means of carrying on his brother’s legacy 137.
  • Akatsuki cloak — Given to him by Toneri when he joins the organization 137.
  • Itachi’s eyes — Received from Toneri and transplanted after Sasuke practices his newly awakened Mangekyō abilities, producing his Eternal Eyes 137 142 147.

Relationships

  • Itachi Uchiha — Older brother and former target of revenge. Learning his motives transforms Sasuke’s hatred into grief, devotion, and a determination to clear his name. He regards the transplanted eyes as his brother’s final gift 107 131 137 169.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Closest friend, acknowledged brother, and rival. Their shared loneliness creates a bond that survives defection and opposing beliefs about revenge and peace; they later resume friendly banter 100 151 152 157 193.
  • Otsutsuki Toneri — Benefactor, Akatsuki leader, and manipulator. Strengthens Sasuke’s eyes, reveals the massacre’s background, and earns his trust while deliberately directing his hatred toward Konoha 98 107 137 180.
  • Orochimaru — Teacher and would-be body thief. Sasuke knowingly accepts his instruction, then absorbs him; Orochimaru’s continued presence inside him becomes a danger Itachi seeks to remove 97 106 133.
  • Kakashi Hatake — Former teacher who unsuccessfully urges him to abandon revenge. Sasuke defeats and hypnotizes him, then attempts to take his Sharingan as clan property 148 154.
  • Tsunade — Fellow avenger and battlefield ally against Konoha’s leadership. Toneri brings them together through their shared grievances over the destruction of their clans 137 148 157.

  • Danzo Shimura — Principal revenge target, whom Sasuke blames for the massacre and Itachi’s suffering. Sasuke destroys his Sharingan and mortally wounds him before Danzo’s suicide seal 155 158.
