Background / History

Konoha and forbidden-technique research

Orochimaru was Hiruzen Sarutobi’s student and a teammate of Tsunade and Jiraiya. Although the three retained a bond, their beliefs and ambitions eventually led them down different paths. He also competed with Minato Namikaze for the Hokage position; Hiruzen’s decision to choose Minato left him resentful despite his limited attachment to the office itself 48 49 85.

After secretly entering Konoha’s forbidden-technique chamber, Orochimaru memorized Impure World Reincarnation and the Eight Branches Technique. He spent more than a decade refining Impure World Reincarnation and developed Living Corpse Reincarnation to prolong his life by transferring his soul between bodies 46 106 133.

Akatsuki membership and defection

Orochimaru accepted Pain’s invitation to join Akatsuki because he coveted the Rinnegan. When obtaining those eyes proved impractical, he targeted Itachi Uchiha’s Mangekyō Sharingan instead. His reincarnation technique had damaged his soul, leaving him vulnerable to Itachi’s genjutsu; his defeat and attack on a fellow member forced him to defect 47.

He subsequently used Impure World Reincarnation when Sasori and Deidara pursued him. Although Akatsuki initially avoided further action because he was troublesome to eliminate, Orochimaru remained wary of Pain and the organization’s unknown capabilities 47 48.

Founding Otogakure and meeting Toneri

Orochimaru founded Otogakure and maintained numerous bases. The newly established village relied on immature ninja recruits and his summoned creatures for surveillance rather than conventional gate guards 46.

When Otsutsuki Toneri arrived, Orochimaru initially refused to appear. He emerged only after Toneri threatened the village with a giant lava construct. Although he coveted Toneri and Otsutsuki Quxian as reincarnation vessels, he recognized that he could not defeat them directly 47.

Their meeting produced two transactions: Orochimaru surrendered his former Akatsuki ring and agreed to investigate reanimating Minato in exchange for a favor. Because Minato’s soul was trapped by the Reaper Death Seal, Orochimaru first needed to find a way to release it 48.

Konoha Crush

Five years later, Orochimaru called in Toneri’s promised favor for the Konoha Crush. During the Forest of Death examination, he met Toneri while disguised as a female Grass genin, killed his two apparent teammates, and confirmed that he would act at the end of the exams 63 64 71.

Disguised as the Fourth Kazekage, Orochimaru restrained Hiruzen and called Toneri forward to intercept Konoha’s defenders. His principal target was Hiruzen rather than the complete destruction of Konoha, which he considered beyond the combined strength of the attacking Sand and Sound forces 78.

The Sound Four enclosed teacher and student in a barrier, where Orochimaru used the reanimated Hashirama and Tobirama Senju against Hiruzen. Hiruzen eventually activated the Reaper Death Seal and sealed both reanimations, but Toneri fatally pierced him before he could seal Orochimaru and Toneri. Orochimaru escaped with the Sound Four 79 82 83.

Completing Toneri’s commission

After the attack, Orochimaru used the Uzumaki Clan’s Shinigami Mask to release the souls swallowed by the Reaper Death Seal. He survived the ritual’s fatal sacrifice through Living Corpse Reincarnation, transferring into a prepared replacement body 84.

He then reanimated Minato, enabling Toneri to obtain the half of the Nine-Tails sealed within him. After witnessing Toneri’s confrontation with the Nine-Tails, Orochimaru released the reanimation and guided Toneri’s party to Ryūchi Cave to study senjutsu 85 88.

Sasuke’s training and Orochimaru’s defeat

Orochimaru marked Sasuke with the Cursed Seal of Heaven and intended to make him his next vessel. Toneri openly explained that plan to Sasuke, who nevertheless chose Orochimaru’s training as a path toward defeating Itachi. The three-year interval between reincarnations gave Sasuke time to grow strong enough to resist possession 97 100.

Under Orochimaru, Sasuke advanced from Chunin to Quasi-Kage Level in three years. Orochimaru recognized both Sasuke’s rapid growth and his own body’s deterioration, but continued pursuing the reincarnation despite Toneri’s warning. During the same visit, he gave Toneri a scroll containing his still-imperfect Impure World Reincarnation 105 106.

Sasuke subsequently defeated him and absorbed his abilities within the reincarnation barrier. Orochimaru nevertheless survived inside Sasuke, remaining aware of events outside 122 133.

Emergence and sealing

During Sasuke’s battle with Itachi, Orochimaru emerged from the Cursed Seal of Heaven as the eight-headed Yamata no Orochi. He intended to confront the dying Itachi and erase the humiliation of his earlier defeat; Itachi had deliberately fought Sasuke in part to draw him out 132 133.

Confident that ordinary attacks could not kill him, Orochimaru allowed Itachi’s blade to strike. He realized too late that it was the Totsuka Blade, a weapon he had sought himself. Itachi sealed both Orochimaru and Yamata no Orochi inside it, then burned an escaping white snake with black flames 133.

Kabuto’s inheritance

After losing his master, Kabuto Yakushi unsuccessfully sought Toneri before returning to Orochimaru’s base. He injected himself with serum from Orochimaru’s great serpent body, developed serpentine traits, and inherited his research. Kabuto later identified himself as Orochimaru’s successor and used an improved Impure World Reincarnation against Toneri 147 162 163.

Appearance

  • Hair and complexion: Long black hair and deathly pale skin 47.
  • Eyes: Golden irises with slit pupils, framed by purple eyeshadow 47.
  • Clothing: Wears a beige robe when first meeting Toneri 47.
  • Voice and mannerisms: A distinctive hoarse, resonant voice, an eerie smile, and frequent lip-licking 47 48.
  • Aging: Appears unchanged eight years after his first meeting with Toneri 105.
  • Disguises: Appears as a female Grass genin and later impersonates the Fourth Kazekage during the Chunin Exams 71 78.

Personality

Orochimaru is calculating, ruthless, and strongly motivated by immortality and the exploration of unknown techniques. He treats cooperation as an exchange: he gives Toneri an unwanted Akatsuki ring for goodwill but demands a valuable favor for reanimating Minato. He also avoids deceiving Toneri about the Reaper Death Seal because the lie would be easily exposed 48.

His pride is a major weakness. Itachi’s effortless victory over him develops into an obsession with the Sharingan and a desire to erase that humiliation. This fixation ultimately draws him into another confrontation with Itachi, where his confidence in his survivability leaves him vulnerable to sealing 88 133.

Despite his ambitions, Orochimaru recognizes overwhelming strength and deliberately avoids becoming Toneri’s enemy. He increasingly takes pleasure in watching others reshape the world, describing Toneri, Tsunade, and Sasuke as different “winds.” He even accepts that failure to possess Sasuke could mark the beginning of Sasuke’s own rise 105 106 162.

Abilities & Skills

Living Corpse Reincarnation

Orochimaru’s self-developed forbidden technique transfers his soul into another person’s body to extend his life 46 97.

  • Requires a three-year interval between reincarnations 97.
  • Allows him to abandon a body sacrificed during the Reaper Death Seal release ritual 84.
  • Damages his soul, contributing to his vulnerability to genjutsu and inability to learn senjutsu 47 84.
  • Can be reversed against him by a target with sufficiently strong will and spiritual resistance; Sasuke ultimately absorbs him within the reincarnation barrier 97 133.

Impure World Reincarnation

Orochimaru rediscovered and refined the Second Hokage’s forbidden technique for summoning the dead 106.

  • Reanimates Hashirama and Tobirama against Hiruzen, and later Minato for Toneri 82 85.
  • Requires the deceased’s soul to be accessible in the Netherworld; souls trapped by the Reaper Death Seal must first be released 48.
  • His version restores less than the deceased’s full living strength 82.
  • Reanimations stronger than their caster may be impossible to control 106.
  • Gives Toneri the technique’s scroll while warning that it remains incomplete 106.

Cursed Seals and Spiritual Survival

Orochimaru developed cursed seals by combining his spiritual will with research into Jugo’s body 133.

  • Places the Cursed Seal of Heaven on Sasuke 97.
  • Can persist through cursed seals even after the loss of his main body 133.
  • Survives Sasuke’s absorption and later emerges when Sasuke is severely weakened 132 133.
  • This survival does not prevent the Totsuka Blade from sealing him 133.

Eight Branches Technique

This forbidden technique transforms Orochimaru into Yamata no Orochi, an enormous eight-headed white serpent 132 133.

  • Uses its heads and fangs as its primary means of attack.
  • Regrows severed heads, giving the form substantial regenerative ability.
  • Fails against Itachi’s Susanoo and is sealed together with Orochimaru by the Totsuka Blade 133.

Snake Ninjutsu and Summoning

Orochimaru’s snake-related modifications began with White Snake genes injected into him during childhood 49.

  • Holds a summoning contract with Ryūchi Cave; all his snake summons originate there 84.
  • Uses summoned snakes to monitor Otogakure and detect visitors 46 105.
  • Employs a venomous snake to kill a Grass genin during the Forest of Death exam 71.
  • Can guide visitors to Ryūchi Cave, although he cannot practice its senjutsu himself because of his flawed soul 84 88.

Research and Technical Knowledge

Orochimaru researches, improves, and simplifies forbidden and secret techniques, with experimentation remaining his foremost interest 46 106.

  • Deciphers a method to undo the Reaper Death Seal 84.
  • Maintains close cooperation with Tsunade; Toneri attributes her development of Wood Release to his assistance 95 96.
  • Uses Rashomon defensive ninjutsu, but lacks the chakra needed for Fivefold Rashomon 106.

Instruction

Orochimaru trains Sasuke intensively to prepare him as a future vessel 97.

  • Raises Sasuke from Chunin to Quasi-Kage Level within three years 105.
  • Passes on his experience and techniques so extensively that Sasuke eventually considers him to have little left to teach 106 133.
  • His instruction is acknowledged by Itachi despite the threat he poses to Sasuke 133.

  • Sasuke Uchiha — Student and intended reincarnation vessel. Their arrangement becomes a mutual contest: Orochimaru provides power while Sasuke waits for an opportunity to defeat him 97 106 133.
  • Itachi Uchiha — Enemy and the source of his Sharingan obsession. Itachi defeats him through genjutsu during their Akatsuki association and later seals him with the Totsuka Blade 47 88 133.
  • Hiruzen Sarutobi — Former teacher and principal target of the Konoha Crush. Hiruzen tries to seal him before Toneri’s intervention 78 83.
  • Jiraiya — Former teammate whose enduring attachment turns to anger when Orochimaru helps bring about their teacher’s death 49 83.
  • Tsunade — Former teammate and later research collaborator. Their close contact continues despite their differing attitudes toward Toneri 48 96 137.
  • Kabuto Yakushi — Loyal subordinate and confidant who inherits his research, modifies himself with serpent serum, and declares himself Orochimaru’s successor 84 162 163.
  • Sound Four — Subordinates who maintain the barrier around his duel with Hiruzen, accompany his escape, and escort Sasuke away from Konoha 79 83 100.
