Background / History

Ancient Rule and Imprisonment

Kaguya belonged to the Ōtsutsuki Main Family and was the clan’s rightful leader. Momoshiki, a branch-family descendant, seized control of the clan; the novel consequently presents him as the rebel rather than Kaguya. The God Tree on the Shinobi World’s planet had been planted by her lineage, giving her a hereditary claim to its fruit 104 181.

After arriving on the planet roughly a thousand years before the main story, Kaguya ate the God Tree Fruit, ended its wars, and unified the continent. She conceived Hagoromo and Hamura through a special method using her own bloodline, without having been with a man 2 92 139.

Although stronger than Momoshiki individually after eating the fruit, she feared his combined strength with Kinshiki and Urashiki. She cast Infinite Tsukuyomi to create White Zetsu soldiers against them. Her sons opposed her methods, fought her for months, and sealed her with Six Paths: Chibaku Tensei. The resulting moon was itself the enormous prison surrounding her 2 99 105 111.

Agreement with Toneri

Toneri entered the sealed space and greeted Kaguya as his grandmother. She initially questioned why she should help a descendant of the sons who had imprisoned her. His promise to free her persuaded her to cooperate, provided he would lend his strength against her powerful enemies 2 3.

Kaguya infused his palm Rinnegan with chakra and ocular power to catalyze its evolution. Before he departed, she also transmitted memories of nearly all her techniques. Although she enjoyed his company, she prioritized his growth and eventual ability to break her seal 3 4.

Return Through a Chakra Incarnation

More than five years later, Toneri returned with an evolved Six-Tomoe Rinnegan. They agreed that Black Zetsu’s proposed resurrection through Madara would not release her true body or restore her full strength. Toneri instead suggested carrying a portion of her chakra outside the seal in another vessel 90 91.

The experiment succeeded with Toneri himself as the vessel. Her released chakra assumed her appearance on the moon, letting her see the living world again. Kaguya thanked him with unusual tenderness, accepted him as her new family, and agreed to leave the accompanying tailed beasts’ chakra alone for his sake 92.

She subsequently traveled with Toneri, who taught her about everyday life after her thousand-year confinement. While watching Naruto, Sasuke, and Itachi, she developed greater interest in human bonds and supported Toneri’s intention to establish a new continental order 94 100 101 130 186.

Akatsuki and the Fourth Shinobi World War

Kaguya accepted an Akatsuki cloak from Toneri and later received one of the organization’s member positions and rings. Her identity and the distinction between her incarnation and sealed true body were explained to their companions before the war 125 140 141 142.

During the fighting, her incarnation destroyed Deidara’s clay dragon and reanimated body with Eighty Gods Vacuum Attack. She also sensed Momoshiki, Kinshiki, and Urashiki approaching the planet 165 173.

Toneri then took her to the moon and used Truth-Seeking Orb: Golden Wheel Reincarnation Explosion to split it, breaking the seal at its core. Kaguya’s true body emerged through a spatial rift, and she returned with him to the battlefield 177.

When Hagoromo appeared, she told him she no longer needed White Zetsu soldiers. Seeing his aged chakra form also weakened her lingering hatred toward her sons. Against Momoshiki, she neutralized his Flame Bird and overwhelmed his giant attack with an Expansive Truth-Seeking Orb. Her success reduced the fear and resentment she had carried toward him 179 183 184 186.

Postwar Family

After the war, Kaguya and Toneri became partners. Five years later, she announced that she was pregnant with his child. Hagoromo expressed hope for her happiness, and Toneri promised to treat her well 189 190.

She later appears in the City of Dawn, welcoming Kurumi and Mio home with Hinata. Despite knowing the girls were unlikely to encounter danger, she instructed them to tell the family before going out again 195.

Appearance

Kaguya has a noble, aloof bearing and a youthful appearance despite her long imprisonment 92 93.

Personality

Kaguya is detached, proud, and accustomed to relying on overwhelming strength. She disdains elaborate schemes and continues to believe that superior power can crush opposition even after her earlier defeat. Ordinary people’s opinions hold little importance to her, and she sees no need to advertise or conceal her identity 96 98 106 140.

Her asceticism coexists with intense possessiveness and attachment to family. Although she initially denies needing companionship, she enjoys Toneri’s visits and deeply appreciates his help. Remembering how poor communication contributed to her estrangement from her sons, she deliberately tries to understand and communicate with him better 3 4 92 96.

She values the purity of the Ōtsutsuki bloodline and initially discourages Toneri from choosing a partner outside the clan. Her concern is both dynastic and personal: she wants his descendants to retain his bloodline and fears him becoming absorbed in worldly desires 96.

Kaguya despises war as a product of human desire, yet supports Toneri’s forceful unification of the continent. Years of observing human relationships broaden her outlook: Might Guy’s sacrifice leads her to acknowledge that humans can display a willingness to give everything for others that her own clan lacks 94 161 186.
